Amazon.com Product Description
Ideal for use in a smaller home shop, the JET 708620B AFS-1000B 550/702/1044 CFM 3-Speed Air Filtration System with Remote and Electrostatic Pre-Filter simply hangs from the ceiling and clears the room of fine dust particles that can compromise air quality in your workspace. This unit can be used with or without a Jet dust collector and comes complete with a remote control, timer, and three-speed capability for powerful performance.

The JET AFS-1000B
Air Filtration System offers:
  • A disposable electrostatic outer filter that attracts more dust particles
  • An inner pocket filter that is removable for easy cleaning
  • 3-speed operation at 550/702/1044 CFM
  • Easy Grip Handles for portability

Eye bolts give you the option of hanging this system from the shop ceiling.

A three-speed motor lets you choose the most efficient air filtration for your needs. View larger.

Remote control capability combines with a clearly marked control panel on the unit for easy operation.
Two-Filter Process Removes a Range of Micron Particles
By quickly and quietly cleaning and filtering 90 percent of all five-micron particles and 80 percent of all one-micron particles, the 708620B ensures a cleaner and healthier shop environment. This system works via a two-filter process: an outer filter removes larger particle while the inner, three-pocket filter traps smaller particles. The end result is less dust and debris compromising air quality in your shop.

Three Speeds and Timer Settings for Efficient Filtration
The system's three-speed (550, 702, and 1044 CFM) motor gives you the flexibility to choose the most efficient air filtration for your shop. For added convenience, the remote control lets you control all the system's functions while it hangs from a ceiling or is placed high up on a shelf. Built-in timer settings for two, four, and eight hours will shut off automatically at the end of the designated time, cleaning the air in your shop even while you're away.

Ball bearing Motor for Fast, Powerful Performance
Thanks to the fully-enclosed, 1/6 HP, ball-bearing motor with overload protection, the 708620B has the capability of filtering the air in a shop measuring 20 x 20 x 8 feet in less than five minutes. It can also filter the air in that same-size shop over 12 times an hour.

Easy-Care Design for Fast Clean-Up
The 708620B is easy to clean. The electrostatic outer filter withstands several washings, and the inner filter can be blown clean simply with compressed air. For added convenience, this handy machine also features grip handles for portability and rubber feet to prevent marring your work surface.

Durable Construction and Electrostatic Filter for Better Performance
Constructed of a heavy-duty, powder-coated metal box, and featuring a powerful motor and fan, the 708620B offers exceptional durability for years of use. For reliable performance, it also comes standard with an electrostatic filter that is electronically charged to attract many more dust particles than other standard filters.

The 708620B measures 30.25 x 24 x 12 inches (WxHxD), weighs 54 pounds, and is backed by a five-year warranty.

About JET: A History of Sharing New, Feature-Rich Products
Opened in 1958 after the founder of the company, Leslie P. Sussman, took the first Boeing Jet Airplane trip from Seattle, Washington to Japan, JET began as a small dealer that sold air hoists and trolleys out of a single hardware store in Seattle. Over the years, JET has carried everything from snowmobiles, transmitter radios, and forklifts to nylon stockings, but by the early 1970s, metalworking had become the base of their business line. And by the 1980s, JET had expanded into the realm of woodworking. Today, you'll find that JET offers a wide range of popular woodworking tools that are backed with best-in-class features and excellent service.

What's in the Box
One air filtration system, one remote control, two "AAA" batteries, four eye bolts and nuts, four mounting brackets, eight hex cap screws, eight lock washers, four foam pads, one Velcro pad, and one manual and warranty card.

A good filtration system is as important as any tool in your shop, andthe Jet AFS-1000 is a pretty inspired machine. Like other systems on the market, Jet's uses a two-filter process: an outer filter removes particles up to 5 microns in size and an inner, three-pocket filter traps particles as small as 1 micron. The electrostatic outer filter easily withstands three or four washings, and the inner filter can be blown clean easily with compressed air. On the power end, Jet's three-speed, 1/6-horsepower motor filters to 1044 cfm on high speed. The outer filter is well sealed and provides efficient intake. However, what really sets the AFS-1000 apart from most filtration systems is its remote control and timer features. Since these systems are most effective when placed high or hung from the ceiling, being able to control all of the unit's functions via remote control is a feature we quickly decided we wouldn't want to live without. The timer, which can also be set via remote, affords you the option to set it and forget it. --Justin Paul

From American Woodworker
No matter how good your dust collection may be, there are always "the ones that got away," those stray dust particles determined to float around the air and end up in your lungs (or in a can of varnish!). That's where an air scrubber comes in. Like the name says, it scrubs dust particles from the air in your shop.

Jet's AFS-1000 scrubber offers a lot of features: a 5-micron outer filter and 1-micron inner filter; a three-speed motor that provides 450, 550, or 650 cubic feet per minute (cfm); a timer that can shut the scrubber off after two, four, or eight hours; and a remote to control the whole deal, turn it on and off, set the speed, and set the timer. Because most scrubbers are hung from the ceiling, making them hard to get to, the remote makes sense. If all this sounds good but you need a bigger unit, look for Jet's new AFS-2000. It'll have all the features of the AFS-1000, but moves air at 800, 1,000, or 1,300 cfm. In addition, the AFS-2000 will take charcoal or electrostatic filters, providing even better air cleaning.

How do you know what size scrubber you need? Buy one that recirculates the air in your shop 6 to 12 times per hour. Here's how to run the numbers: First calculate the volume of your shop in cubic feet, then divide this number by the cfm of the scrubber you're considering. The answer is how many minutes it'll take for one air exchange. Five minutes means 12 exchanges per hour.

Does a Great Job4
Like a lot of woodoworkers, I put off buying an air filtration system longer than I should have. It's one of those things that realy should be done BEFORE you begin to set up a shop area. Well, I finally did my research on available machines and decided to buy the Jet. I'm glad I did. It definitely does a terrific job, is relatively quiet, and it mounts easily to the ceiling. The filters are easy to change -- just flip four clips and pull out the filter. The machine is also fairly lightweight, making it easier to mount. The remote control is a great feature, allowing you to turn the machine on and off from a distance, set the "speed" (hi, medium, or low), and set the timer (it has settings for 2, 4, and 6 hours). The timer is a very useful feature, since you can set the machine to run for 2 hours as you're leaving the shop, and you don't have to remember to come back down to turn it off as you do with other machines.

My ultimate test was sanding a large maple table top. I'll describe what it was like doing this before and after I got the Jet system.

BEFORE: My shop measures 30' long by 20' wide. Before I had this machine (when I had no air filtration system at all) whenever I sanded a table top the shop got filled with dust really quickly. Even after I stopped sanding, the dust hung in the air for maybe half an hour. And the next day, I'd come into the shop and see a thin layer of dust settled on everything.

AFTER: Now that I use this machine, the air never gets as dusty as it used to (even in the middle of sanding). Also, within five minutes after I'm done sanding, the air is crystal clear. By leaving the machine on after I'm all done, whatever dust remains is taken care of. The next day, coming into the shop, there is no dust on anything.

* * * * * *

As a final note, I give it four stars because the remote does not allow 360-degree access. But this is a relatively small matter with such a great machine.

Clean Air, yipee!5
I have a dust collector, but there is still a lot of fine particles that get missed, especially when sanding. The AFS-1000 picks up where the dust collector leaves off.

The low speed is very quiet, and it starts gently, which is really nice for a unit that hangs from the ceiling. You can mount it on a wall too. It comes with hardware for both types of mounting, but no chains. Not only are batteries included, Jet even includes two pieces of velcro to stick the remote somewhere!

Having a remote makes this a piece of cake to turn on/off. The LED's on the unit are large, so it is easy to see what settings are on (Speed: low, medium, high and Time: 2, 4, 8 hours).

"Too soon old, Too late smart"5
You know what they say - "Too soon old, too late smart". I've been woodworking and doing carpentry work for years. Until recently I've been guilty of not always using the proper protective gear for the task at hand. I now have a pretty well equipped workshop and this was one of the last major items that I purchased. It should have been one of the first.

I purchased the Jet AFS-1000 about a year ago and it has been among the best workshop investments I've ever made. The air in my shop has been crystal clear most of the time for the past year.

I bought this unit after reading numerous reviews - just like you are doing now - and decided on this one because of the features it offers. Two of the best features are the remote control and the timer.

As suggested in the instruction manual, I ceiling mounted the unit. The ceilings in my shop are 9'6" so it would have been impractical to use a control that was mounted on the unit proper. Some units offer a switch on the power cord, but that would entail letting the cord dangle so that you could reach the in-line switch. Jet solved this dilema by equipping this unit with an infra-red remote control. Yes, just like your television, you must have line-of-sight between the remote and the control panel on the filter, but I find this not to be a problem at all. With the remote, you are able to control all functions of the filter including, on & off, the 3 speeds, and the timer.

Speaking of the timer, most times when I am going to be producing sawdust, I just set the timer for 4 or 8 hours and forget it. When I'm finished for the day, I just walk away and let the unit continue to clean the air until it automatically shuts off. The next time I come into the shop, the air is clean and there is much less sawdust coating my machinery, etc.

If you do much woodworking at all, you need an air filtration system. Do yourself a favor and get this one, it's among the best available.
