The only one of Kipling's novels to be cast in an American setting, Captains Courageous endures as one of literature's most cherished and memorable sea adventures. Harvey Cheyne, spoiled millionaire's son, tumbles overboard from a luxury liner--only to be rescued by the crew of a Gloucester schooner. Thus begins the boy's second voyage into the rugged rites and ways of sailors. Like all Kipling's masterworks, Captains Courageous is an interweaving of art and moral purpose. Angus Wilson has said that it shows "delicacy of craft and violence of feeling, exactitude and wile impressionism, subtlety and true innocence." A popular favorite since its first publication in 1897, the novel remains a classic story of youthful initiation--and a lively tribute to the author's famous code of bravery, loyalty, an honor among men.

Great Book!
This book is the story of Harvey a spoiled, rich, and obnoxious teenager who has never worked a day in his life. He falls over the rail of a passenger ferry because he is sick from trying to smoke a cigar. He is then saved from drowning by Troop the captain of a fishing vessel. When Harvey demands to be taken back to land and offers to buy his whole ship if necessary, Troop believes him to be "addle-pated" and decides instead to put him to work until the end of the fishing season because they can't afford to turn around and head back to land now. Harvey then insults Troop and receives a bloody nose for his troubles. Harvey is soon put to work and, throughout the fishing season, gains character & humility as well as work hardened muscles and calloused hands. This is a great book for young men about the uplifting and redemptive power of hard manual labor as well as being a great adventure book. The Gloucester accent that is used throughout this book is at first difficult to understand but if you keep at it you very quickly get the hang of and eventually hardly even notice it. This is one of my favorite books. I have read it several times over the years. This is one of those "classic books" that you should read not because it is a so-called "classic" but because it is actually a very entertaining book.
