Trawler: A Journey Through the North AtlanticTrawler: A Journey Through the North Atlantic by Redmond O'Hanlon
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $0.74
I adore Redmond O'Hanlon and his self-effacing and irreverent ramblings. He goes where few dare to tread-- here he boards a North Sea Trawler in winter, whether he's fully prepared or not. He brings you with him with boundless humor and a knack for revealing the most extraordinary people.
Men's LivesMen's Lives by Peter Matthiessen
Buy new: $15.30 / Used from: $0.01
This remains one of my favorite books of all time, and it was one of the books that inspired me to take up writing about fisheries. It is poetic, observant, poignant and beautifully written (as are all of his works).
The Wooden Nickel: A NovelThe Wooden Nickel: A Novel by William Carpenter
Buy new: $18.68 / Used from: $0.01
Bill is one of my mentors, but I'm not just trying to get brownie points here. Wooden Nickel is a gritty, warts-and-all look at a middle-aged Maine lobster fisherman whose marriage is falling apart. It's not for the faint of heart, but it's entertaining, intense, funny, and compelling.
The Secret Life of Lobsters: How Fishermen and Scientists Are Unraveling the Mysteries of Our Favorite Crustacean (P.S.)The Secret Life of Lobsters: How Fishermen and Scientists Are Unraveling the Mysteries of Our Favorite Crustacean (P.S.) by Trevor Corson
Buy new: $10.07 / Used from: $0.01
A terrific introduction to the fishermen, fisheries, and science of lobsters.
Gaff TopsailsGaff Topsails by Patrick Kavanagh
Buy used from: $0.01
This is one of the best novels I have read in years, but hardly anyone in the US has heard about it. It's the story of a Newfoundland outport, its people, the land, and the sea. Very Faulkneresque, both narrowly focused and detailed, yet sweeping and immense, like life in a Newfoundland village by the sea.
Song for the Blue Ocean: Encounters Along the World's Coasts and Beneath the SeasSong for the Blue Ocean: Encounters Along the World's Coasts and Beneath the Seas by Carl Safina
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $0.94
Safina travels the world looking at fish populations and fisheries in peril. He is squarely in the conservation camp, but he writes sympathetically about fishermen and he's a superb storyteller.
In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship EssexIn the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
Philbrick is not only a careful historian, he is a terrific storyteller. He recounts the story of the Essex, holed and sunk in an attack by an irate sperm whale, then he follows the fates of the shipwrecked crewmen.
Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the WorldCod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World by Mark Kurlansky
Buy new: $9.75 / Used from: $2.39
Kurlansky's thin, readable volume on the history of the Atlantic cod fishery.
The Doryman's Reflection: A Fisherman's LifeThe Doryman's Reflection: A Fisherman's Life by Paul Molyneaux
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $0.89
Written by a fisherman-turned-writer who lives near me in Maine. His prose is, as the title says, reflective and melancholy, clearly drawing the gritty, cold and hard life of a fisherman, at once grinding you down and drawing you in.
Cold as a Dog and the Wind NortheastCold as a Dog and the Wind Northeast by Ruth Moore
Buy used from: $10.00
Maine poet Ruth Moore's book are tough to find, but well worth it. She has the voice and the humor of the Maine coast.
Among WhalesAmong Whales by Roger Payne
Buy used from: $0.01
Payne is a pioneer of whale research and a staunch advocate. This beautifully written autobiography chronicles his life among whales all over the world.
Lament for an Ocean: The Collapse of the Atlantic Cod FisheryLament for an Ocean: The Collapse of the Atlantic Cod Fishery by Michael Harris
Buy used from: $9.50
A journalist's expose about the demise of the cod fishery in Atlantic Canada. It's dense with facts and figures, names and dates, but overall it paints a clear picture of bureaucratic failure with dire human and ecological consequences.
The Urban Whale: North Atlantic Right Whales at the CrossroadsThe Urban Whale: North Atlantic Right Whales at the Crossroads
Buy new: $61.00 / Used from: $50.39
As I show in Entanglements, the North Atlantic right whale is at a tipping point. Having come near to the brink of extinction and teetered there for centuries, people can now make choices that will determine the right whale's ultimate fate. In this book, the people who have spent their lives studying the urban whale speak about the creatures they have known in an array of voices.
Moby Dick: or the Whale (Modern Library)Moby Dick: or the Whale (Modern Library) by Herman Melville
Buy new: $15.64 / Used from: $8.26
My favorite edition of Moby Dick is illustrated by Rockwell Kent and first published by Random House in 1930, but several more recent editions of exist.
Monsters of the SeaMonsters of the Sea by Richard Ellis
Buy new: $12.71 / Used from: $4.38
A fascinating tome about the strange creatures, mostly figments of ancient imaginations, that graced the edges of maps in the regions of the unexplored seas.
Men And WhalesMen And Whales by Richard Ellis

This book offers exhaustive and carefully researched information about the complicated relationship humans have had with whales over the millenia.
Captains CourageousCaptains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling

A must-read for anyone who wants to know about the history of coastal New England.
