The Best Rock Albums of 2007 - in Hindsight
By an Amazon.com customer
MagicMagic by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.56
This uptempo materpiece is a cornucopia of rock/pop styles. There are touches of Phil Spector abound. Springsteen sings clearly direct lyrics and distinct tunes. This is a very fun E Street Band album.
SovereigntySovereignty by The Ben Gunn Society
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $5.99
Balanced and exciting sophomore release from zany, psychedelic, pirate cum jam band. Interesting lyrics, fleshed out hooks and detailed performances make for a strong listen. My favorite "unknown" release of the year.
MIKA LIFE IN CARTOON MOTIONMIKA LIFE IN CARTOON MOTION by Mika
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $4.17
Virtually impossible to turn off. What a magnificent voice, sure it rings of Freddie Mercury - and what's wrong with that? I couldn't stand to hear yet another Chester Bennington clone, could you? Eurotrash disco never sounded so fresh and vibrant as it does on Cartoon Motion.
The ElseThe Else by They Might Be Giants
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.23
Best TMBG since Flood. This package pulls no punches. Power pop insanity galore. These songs are loaded with melodic hooks and deviant distraction. This collection is hard to beat - perhaps this is the best album of the year - and of their career.
RevivalRevival by John Fogerty
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.99
Fogerty's first great album. Even with CCR, John was always able to write a great hook, song, lyric - but he never, in my mind at least, was able to come through with a cohesive collection of songs. He came close on his last try, but here he hits a home run. The sequence and concept behind Revival match the quality of performance.
Sweet WarriorSweet Warrior by Richard Thompson
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $9.05
Another focused and mostly rocking from a vintage artist. Less emphasis on flashy guitar runs and greater dedication to song craft. This is RT's finest album since Mirror Blue or Rumor and Sigh. Essential.
