my favorite calendar
This is the third year I've bought the Inuit Art Cape Dorset calendar. It is so beautiful, with its strikingly bright and detailed artwork. This year's calendar is as beautiful as ever, with many talented artists featured.
cape dorset inuit art
Love the simplistic art in the Cape Dorset series. The Inuit art is really sophisticated--in its simplicity! Any time the art is available-in print or fabric form--it is something to be admired --and purchased.
Mleh.
I've purchased this desk calendar the last number of years it has been released. I have to say, I am a bit disappointed with this year's selections: not totally, but partially. They've featured a lot of B&W pieces, which is fine -- I get it -- but I don't know if there is enough contemporary stuff. Kavavaow Mannomee certainly has a few prints in here, which is nice, and there are some beautiful selections, but some of them are by artists that have much more to offer: the best example being the cover. Kananginak Pootoogook is one of the most renowned Cape Dorset artists, and they chose a print by him that is really not even close to being one of his best. They've known a number of really beautiful ones in the past, but the cover doesn't really draw people in.
In any event, this calendar does have a number of striking pieces: Tattooed Whales, for example, which is one you don't see much...however, Cape Dorset printmakers have so many better prints than the ones in this desk calendar. I'm grateful that Pomegranate is showcasing Inuit art to such an extent, but this calendar is sub-par compared to the incredible contributions from the last two years.
