Customer Reviews
Great concept. Short on the execution
I've been searching high and low for the ideal sketchbook and read rave reviews about the Moleskin notebook so went ahead an purchased one. I did take into account peoples comments of the paper and it's lack of diversity to different medium but thought it was subjective.
Fast forward, the cover material is great and seems durable, the place holder and elastic band also a plus as well as the pocket in the back.
But her'e my biggest pet peeve, the paper. It's very smooth and very transparent. I made a few pencil drawings with an HB pencil and it wasn't too bad but forget about using an ink pen (Uniball, Rolling Ball, etc). Although the paper does absorb it well you can see the artwork and words on the other side even when no light is shinning through.
Also, the paper seems to fall short for using anything other than a pencil and soft strokes. I've had dozens of sketchbooks and the paper was always diverse enough to take different mediums with no problem. Again my biggest issue is the transparency and feel of the paper. It lacks a certain "roughness" you're used to seeing in sketchbooks so I would suffice to say that this is not a sketchbook but more like journal. The most comparable illustration I can give is that it feels and writes like regular notebook ruled paper but it's a solid manila color.
That said, there are various comments that the "sketchbook" version of this notebook has paper similar to the cover stock like the first inside page of the notebook where it says "this book belongs to"... Unfortunately, the watercolor alternative is no good either becuase 1. It's only available hardcover, 2. It's in a horizontal format and 3. It has about 1/2 the pages of the notebook.
Alas, my search continues. Ideally, Moleskin would produce a version of this with a lighter watercolor paper, in a vertical format, with a soft cover and add pages. If they did that I'd by it by the case.

Makes Me Want To Write Something
I mistakenly purchased this from Barnes&Noble on impulse instead of buying it from here, got stiffed for a few extra bucks.
This is a great notebook to jot down your thoughts or for any writing purpose, great flexible leather cover, and soft acid-free paper, also its book bound (?) so it lays flat on what ever page you are on. I highly recommend it, although it will not make you a Steven King.
perfect notebook
I've just received the Moleskine notebook. Handmade, perfect soft cover, a pleasure to make notes...
