The Persian BoyThe Persian Boy by Mary Renault
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.98
An excellent historical novel by Mary Renault. An Alexander the Great novel (based on actual history, but a lot of stuff is fictionalised), told from the perspective of Bagoas, Alexander's favourite eunuch.
Alexander, Revisited - The Final Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)Alexander, Revisited - The Final Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $1.72
If you had no idea who that hot skinny guy in Oliver Stone's Alexander film was, you NEED to see this version. It's the final cut and includes not only the introduction of the character Bagoas, but extra Bagoas footage, as well. Only warning is that it's about four hours long, but it's an interesting four hours.
Moreschi - The Last CastratoMoreschi - The Last Castrato
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $11.74
I'm including this for its historical value. Those familiar with classical choral singing will be able to tell that at the time of these recordings, Moreschi's once-fine voice is now cracking due in part to age and possibly in part to nervousness of the then-new technology (recordings made 1902 and 1904). His voice is also NOT representative of operatic castrati, as he had no stage training.
Farinelli, il CastratoFarinelli, il Castrato
Buy used from: $11.25
Not a genuine operatic castrato recording, but a computer-spliced facsimile! The voices of a female soprano and a male counter-tenor were electronically "blended" to create the soundtrack of this fictional film based on the life of the famed operatic castrato, Farinelli.
FarinelliFarinelli
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $13.00
A pretty good film based on the life of Farinelli, the most famous of the operatic castrati. The film takes many liberties with his life, but overall, it's not bad. I've seen some people try and nit-pick about the sex scenes, but honestly, I have less issue with that than I do with the portrayal of Handel.
Cry to HeavenCry to Heaven by Anne Rice
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I'm no fan of Ms Rice; she spends half a chapter describing a room before you realise nothing happened. Regardless, she did good job keeping the castrati from being whiny ninnies and addresses some social points about masculinity, if you can stay up through masses of metaphor in place of soft core and endless droning about scenery
