The Sunne In Splendour: A Novel of Richard IIIThe Sunne In Splendour: A Novel of Richard III by Sharon Kay Penman
Buy new: $12.92 / Used from: $5.99
First novel from the wonderful SKP. A gripping book about the War of the Roses and the end of the Plantagenets, you’ll be thinking about it for weeks afterward and scorning the Tudor revisionist history of Richard III. He was not a hunchback, had a reputation as a battle commander second only to his brother, the awesome Edward IV, and later as peacekeeper of the notoriously hostile North. Read it!
Here Be DragonsHere Be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman

Excellent, excellent book! I could not put it down and finished it in one 16-hour sitting. Fascinating history, engaging characters, beautiful description, a touching love story and plenty of sex; it's all there. Start with this one and then read the other two books in this Welsh Trilogy: Falls the Shadow and The Reckoning, and you will not be disappointed!
OutlanderOutlander by Diana Gabaldon
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
This book kept coming up as a recommendation but I put off reading it because of the time travel aspect. When I finally read it, I fell in LOVE with it. Diana Gabaldon has created two refreshingly original, riveting and true-to-life characters in Jamie and Claire. This is one of my very favorite books, and all of the books in the series are great. I highly recommend them.
Forever AmberForever Amber by Kathleen Winsor
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $5.99
Hard to believe this book was written in 1944. Amber hooks you from page one and takes you on an incredible ride through restoration London: the streets, the theater, plague, the great fire, Charles II's court. Amber is often compared to Scarlett O'Hara and appears on many best character lists. The last page will leave you crying out, "No, this can't be the end!" But it is, and it's a great one!
The Other Boleyn GirlThe Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
Buy new: $11.52 / Used from: $0.01
This was my intro to Gregory and the only one of her books on my list. This one stands out head and shoulders above her others. Mary Boleyn is well-drawn, very likeable and you really root for her to come out ahead of her horrible family and her bitch of a sister. Nothing new or surprising here, but a well-written, enjoyable read. The movie really wanders from the book and does not do it justice.
Water for Elephants: A NovelWater for Elephants: A Novel by Sara Gruen
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.74
A very enjoyable novel about the heydey of the traveling circus and the dark side kept hidden from the public. Features an endearing narrator and a cast of colorful characters. If you're an animal lover, you'll like this one.
Enemy Women: A Novel (P.S.)Enemy Women: A Novel (P.S.) by Paulette Jiles
Buy new: $10.07 / Used from: $0.01
A Civil War novel set in Missouri, a border state with divided loyalties. 18-year old Adair is arrested on suspicion of spying and sent to the women's prison in St. Louis. There she gains the admiration and eventual love of a Union officer. This is a gritty novel about a woman's grueling quest for freedom, home and a life beyond.
Lonesome Dove: A NovelLonesome Dove: A Novel by Larry McMurtry
Buy new: $23.04 / Used from: $15.99
Wow, what a book! Grabbed me from the beginning and still hasn't let go long after finishing it. A superb cast of characters from the sweet and innocent to the purely evil and everything in between. Tender moments, heartstopping moments, horrifying moments. I can't find one complaint with this book. This is writing at its very best.
