![]() | Running Scared
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.25 An entertaining and demented take on the drug dealer storyline. Murder, mayhem and (no) soap.
![]() | The Hills Have Eyes (Unrated Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.71 I watched this primarily because I enjoyed Aja's previous film "High Tension". Not as strong as that one, but still has plenty of gruesome and violent sequences. I never saw the original, so I can't compare.
![]() | Thank You for Smoking (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.90 Smart, sardonic comedy about the tobacco industry. Takes every tobacco taboo and toys with it.
![]() | V for Vendetta (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.88 The Wachowski brothers redeemed themselves with this hybrid British history/comic book fantasy film with a timely socio-political message.
![]() | Inside Man (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $0.73 A new coat of paint on the bank heist genre. Denzel, Clive and Jodie hold this film together with their performances whilst Spike Lee turns in one of his better films.
![]() | The Devil and Daniel Johnston
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.54 An engaging documentary about mentally ill Daniel Johnston--a poet, singer, songwritier, musician. Well done, even if you're not into music. Also a showcase for the importance of psychotropic medications and why some people need to take their meds!
![]() | Brick
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $1.56 Strange but engaging noir film with 1940's dialogue spoken by contemporary teenagers. A crime noir set against present day high schoolers in San Juan Capistrano, California. Gordon-Levitt is an actor on the rise.
![]() | Down in the Valley
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.80 Odd and engrossing character driven story with Edward Norton as the psychologically disturbed protagonist. Also, I felt an allegorical commentary on contemporary society (especially at the end of the film).
![]() | The Proposition
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $0.92 A gritty, violent Australian western in the vein of Eastwood/Leoni's spaghetti westerns. Winstone, Pearce and Hurt turn in fine, rugged performances along with Watson in this mid-1800's brutal frontier living story.
![]() | The King
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.57 Interesting and unexpected indie film. Hurt and Bernal turn in fine performances. An unusual drama set in the south with complex human conditions.
![]() | An Inconvenient Truth
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $3.89 I guess there are some people who will say global warming is fiction after viewing this documentary. Gore turns a potentially boring subject into an engrossing college lecture. Will it be enough to stop billions of people from destroying earth? I think not.
![]() | X-Men - The Last Stand (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $0.78 Say what you will about this third installment. It was entertaining and a decent entry into the series. I usually don't say this, but it could have been longer than it was.
![]() | Cars (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.96 This film was robbed of the best animated film Oscar. Some disturbing, non-child oriented other animated film with a penguin seemed to win the votes. "Cars" was easily the best animated film of 2006.
![]() | A Prairie Home Companion
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $1.17 Altman's last film was one of his better ones. The story is interesting and the actors seem like they are enjoying themselves. Solid story and performances. I'm going to miss Altman's films whether they were excellent or garbage.
| Superman Returns (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01 Look, I grew up on Christopher Reeve like many of my generation, but I think Singer did a great job of reintroducing Superman to a new generation. It was an emotional experience knowing that Christopher was not alive to see this new chapter.
![]() | Who Killed the Electric Car?
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.97 Confirmation that the American government/Bush administration is crap. Why not electric cars people? Give me one good reason. Do we really want to depend on oil for our cars? Go electric!
![]() | Lady in the Water (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $5.49 / Used from: $0.08 I know. His worst reviewed movie yet. I don't care. I like Shyamalan. I will always go see his films. Giamatti was excellent by the way. Sure, Shyamalan should have had less screen time, but the overall effect of the film was not diminished. Bravo for not making films everyone likes.
![]() | Little Miss Sunshine
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.63 One of the best family comedy/dramas in years. The entire cast was spot on. Destined to be a classic.
![]() | Miami Vice (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $0.01 I grew up watching the original television series. I like Mann. I thought the film was definitely entertaining throughout. Mann's direction was excellent. The only drawback was Colin's wavering American accent.
![]() | The Illusionist (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.67 Edward Norton turns in another winning performance in this supernatural drama. A good story with magic at its core. Unfortunately, and strangely, this was released two months before "The Prestige" and was overlooked.
![]() | Crank (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.99 Pure adrenaline rush from start to finish. Jason Statham is well suited for these roles. He's not some lughead, he actually acts and can pull of comedy, action and drama. Many memorable scenes in this one. Mindless fun.
![]() | The Queen
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.00 Obviously Mirren's performance was top notch. I felt the film was slightly overrated, but the performances feel real and the fact that this film is fiction but seems like a documentary of what actually happened is amazing.
![]() | The Departed (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.57 DiCaprio, Nicholson, Sheen, Wahlberg, Damon and Scorsese. Need I say more?
![]() | Little Children
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.49 Easily one of the best films of 2006 that received little attention. Winslet turns in one of her best performances. This film should have been nominated for best picture.
![]() | The Prestige
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $2.04 For the record this film and "The Illusionist" have nothing in common except that magic plays an integral part in both stories. I like Nolan's films and this did not disappoint. Bale and Jackman go tete a tete and both turn in fine performances.
![]() | Babel
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $0.94 I've enjoyed Inarritu's other films, and I think "Babel" easily sits beside "21 Grams" and "Amores Perros". "Babel" is perhaps the strongest narrative of the three, beautifully tying together the separate, but interwoven storylines. Everyone's performances are top notch.
![]() | Stranger Than Fiction
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.92 An amusing storyline with great performances by Ferrell, Gyllenhaal and Thompson. Perfect character driven love story/fantasy/comedy.
![]() | Harsh Times
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.40 Bale should have received an Oscar nomination for his performance in this film. When will he get the recognition he deserves? Looking over his body of work I'm amazed he hasn't received a nomination ever. "American Psycho", "Batman Returns", "The Machinist", "Reign Of Fire", "The Prestige", "Equilibrium", "Empire Of The Sun".
![]() | Casino Royale (2-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $2.11 Daniel Craig is the perfect addition to the franchise, and this is the grittiest Bond in a long time. I hope they continue the series in this new vein. Best Bond film since 1995's "Goldeneye".
![]() | Blood Diamond (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.88 DiCaprio turns in another fine performance, one to rival his performance in "The Departed". Honsou is also excellent. Zwick turns in his best film since "Glory".
![]() | Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $3.09 All Gibson prejudices aside, he did make an interesting (if inaccurate) film. Mesmerizing, meditative and certainly violent (a theme in Gibson-directed films such as "Braveheart" and "The Passion Of The Christ").
![]() | Children of Men (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.78 I was hoping for so much more, but ultimately the film left me cold. It has merits, and I am a fan of dystopian futures, but I just didn't feel for these characters for some reason.
![]() | Venus
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $1.50 O'Toole's best in years. My wife stated that O'Toole did not appear to be acting, but that he seemed to be on his last leg for real. Either way, this character driven story is engaging and realistic. If this is O'Toole's last film, he went out in fine form.
![]() | Pan's Labyrinth
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $1.21 I was hoping for so much more, but this was somewhat of a let down. It's still a good film, but I wouldn't call it great. I like Del Toro's direction and previous films, but something about this story left me feeling uninvolved.
![]() | Seraphim Falls
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.88 Another gritty western with more metaphor than in recent westerns. Brosnan and Neeson turn in some of their best work here. The film is relentess from start to finish and you can decide what to make of it in the end.
![]() | Perfume - The Story Of A Murderer
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.18 Tom Tykwer returns in fine form after the disappointing "Heaven". I'd easily put this up there with Tykwer's best like "Run Lola Run" and "The Princess And The Warrior". Well casted, well acted, well written, well edited and well directed--I'm surprised this didn't get any recognition from the Academy Awards.
![]() | The Host (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.70 Solid Korean filmmaking here with the first horror/creature feature film in a long while that I enjoyed watching. What sets this film apart is intelligent directing and storytelling as well as solid performances from the cast. I also appreciated the anti-American message and wished that there were more films today that criticized American policies and attitudes.
![]() | After the Wedding
Buy new: $13.96 / Used from: $6.68 This nominee for Best Foreign Film from Denmark has a good story, solid direction and great performances from its cast. A moving film that you seldom get to see these days.
![]() | Days of Glory (Indigenes)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $1.75 Easy to see why this was nominated for Best Foreign Film. An absolute travesty the way France has treated Algeria for helping them during World War II. Moving performances by a mostly unknown cast.
![]() | The Lives of Others
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.96 Best Foreign Film, and it's easy to see why. The story builds to its climax and epilogue. Solid performances by the cast. To me, a story about character and the overall cause. It's tough to say Best Foreign Film when "After The Wedding", "Water", "Days Of Glory" and "Pan's Labyrinth" were equally as strong.
