Product Description

A new generation of locomotives for a changing world: greener, cleaner, and just as powerful. This book introduces readers to General Electric's Evolution Series, the company’s latest achievement in a long and distinguished history of locomotive design. At the heart of the Evolution's success is the GEVO 12-cylinder engine, which produces the same horsepower as the old 16-cylinder FDL while using less fuel and reducing emissions. Today’s most up-to-date railfans will want to read about the development, testing, production, and use of the locomotive that, in its first year of production, has already been ordered by every Class 1 railroad in North America. Photographs and illustrations document the features and components of the Evolutions operating across the country, and interviews with GE and railroad personnel fill in the details of current operations and plans for what is certain to be the future of American rail.

From the Inside Flap
Now today's most up-to-date railfans can witness and read all about the locomotives that, in their first year of production, were ordered by every Class 1 railroad in North America: The GE Evolution Series.

Six years and more than $200 million in the making, the Evolution Series represents General Electric's response to the Environmental Protection Agency's "Tier 2" emissions regulations and incorporates technologies that allow it to produce the same horsepower with four fewer cylinders than its predecessor.

Author Sean Graham-White takes readers inside GE's Erie, Pennsylvania, facilities for a privileged look at the design, manufacture, testing, and even the sale and marketing of the Evolution Series and its GEVO powerplant, leaving no major component of the locomotives unexamined.

Photographs from rail photographers around the country document the Evolution Series on the factory floor and at work across the United States and Canada, while interviews with key GE and railroad personnel fill in the details of current operations. Also included are a selection of design drawings and a complete railroad-by-railroad listing of Evolution Series orders and production through the 2006 calendar year.

Graham-White also examines the precedents that the Evolution Series has set and where these are likely to lead the future of railroading in North America and, in fact, around the globe.

From the Back Cover
For the first time, readers are given a full account of the GE Evolution Series locomotives and their GEVO powerplants. Here are the technologies that answered the EPA's more stringent "Tier 2" emissions regulations and yielded no fewer than 25 U.S patents. Author Sean Graham-White provides the complete story behind Evolution Series design, manufacture, testing, and sales; gives readers a rare look inside General Electric's Erie, Pennsylvania, facilities; and relates interviews with key GE and railroad pesonnel. The Evolution Series, which has been ordered by every North American Class 1 railroad, is shown at work across the U.S. and Canada in color photography that is complemented by a selection of line drawings and a complete listing of production through the 2006 calendar year.

Excellent Reference Book for Railfans5
This well written book is an excellent reference book that should be a part of every serious railfan's collection. Cover diagrams of the GE Evolution Series locomotives are only the beginning of a wealth of information about the GEVO origin, growth plan, testing, marketing and building of both the AC and DC series. Many great pictures of the locos in great railfan settings. Readers are given a full account of the GE Evolution Series locomotives and their GEVO powerplants. Focus is on the products that meet the EPA's more stringent "Tier 2" emissions regulation. This book also gives a rare view into the GE factory in Erie Pa.
