A Plesant Purchase
When I first upgraded from my Dell 19" LCD to this, I have to say I was a little unimpressed. As a for warning, if you don't want to really mess around with the settings on the monitor for a little while, I'd suggest looking for a different monitor, especially if you're a gamer. Frankly, their default color schemes suck. It took me a good while to get a good setting that was natural and wasn't too bright/colorful and actually had a black instead of a grey. If you don't mind fixing this, I'd suggest using the Standard or Theater mode and then adjusting the settings as you'll get a better black. Otherwise, the black is a dark grey and is kind of annoying.
With that being said, after I got this monitor set up using a generic color chart from Google images, I was set. It took me a few hours to enjoy the monitor, but I actually love this monitor now. It's big (wide) and supports 1080p. The colors are perfect (if configured correctly). The glossy finish on the monitor and panel is awesome. I really enjoy having a monitor that doesn't pick up light and shine it back in my face while trying to play a dark game.
I've seen complaints from a few things I'd like to address. One of the big ones is the stand. It's a plastic stand, however, it works just fine. You can't really adjust too much as far as heigth, but you could always just buy a stand you want or a wallmount to do that. Don't fear that the stand won't hold the monitor. It will hold just fine. It's sturdy plastic. Another thing I've seen complaints is that the monitor doesn't come with an HDMI cable, even though it's an HDMI monitor. Let me just note most anything you buy that says HDMI will NOT come with an HDMI cable. Even a PlayStation 3 won't come with the cable. However, it comes with a VGA and a DVI cable, which DVI is good enough. And yes, the speakers suck. They're 20W speakers. Those are just a bonus. The monitor without the cheap speakers is good enough.
The last thing that people complain about that I agree with is the backlight on the edges. Now, this is only something you'll notice when the screen is black or really dark, and it's only a little bit of a backlight, but it will annoy anyone at first. I did discover that it takes a while before the backlight starts shining through a bit so you might not notice it at first. It's only a little bit, but it's a definite downfall of the monitor. Playing a game such as Left 4 Dead on the PC left me a little upset since it ruined a bit of the atmosphere. But like most things, you just get use to it and ignore it. I hardly recognize it anymore. This is the only reason I can say this monitor is a 4 star and not a 5. But even with this, I'd say the monitor is a 4.5 rather than just a 4. There's too many good features that outweigh this one complaint. I highly recommend purchasing this for a monitor or a bedroom television.
ASUS equals WIN
ASUS has always had a reputation for great products and this monitor is no exception. The display is bright, vivid, and clear. Get your input cable (VGA, DVI, or HDMI) and power cable, plug them in, and it's on. It has multiple display modes, all of which you can modify to your tastes (something I haven't done as I'm lazy and lean to having the most versatile settings for any sort of work or gaming I'm doing). When I purchased this particular monitor, it was selling for around $140 USD, and I read some reviews about how it is only decent (on a scale of horrible/lame/decent/good/great/excellent) for doing visual-based editing/creation work (meaning videos/movies, 2D/3D modeling, photo work, and whatever else I left out). After doing some light research, I believe I concur with them, but only if it's regarding any professional level work. Any hobbyist or student will be pleased enough with it.
Now there are a few annoyances with it (hence my 4 stars instead of 5), which mainly concern the options/side-features rather than the point of having a monitor (it's a display, which it does fantastically). It has an almost-fixed volume (it has built-in speakers, which produce sound like it is coming from behind the LCD screen itself). There are two buttons on the front to adjust the volume, which are horrible for adjusting it from blasting to quiet or vice versa. You can barely make out the adjustment buttons on the bottom right corner of the monitor in the dark, so you need an additional light source other than the monitor to see them enough. The volume is on a scale of 0-100 (like most), and the auto-adjustment (holding down up/down) is slower than just rapidly pressing them over and over again. I should be slightly more clear on this: the numbers change, but the volume itself seems to be reluctant to change with the numbers (if it was at 75, turning it down isn't noticeable until 50, at least significantly, and vice versa). A dial would have been much better. Now the sound quality is good, but some $30-50 USD pair of 2.1 channel speakers (or higher) would do much better. Another disappointing side-feature was that there wasn't a built-in USB hub. Not required, but a good majority of LCD monitors have them as a common feature. The last one is that the screen is a matte finish, not a glossy finish. Depending on who you are, this is a good or a bad thing. I personally find matte finishes annoying, as they're slightly harder to clean without leaving streaks (a bit of a neat freak).
All in all, it's a great monitor for most people. For those who want extras in addition to a display, go digging around a little more in Amazon (or wherever else) for one. There are a bunch that will have what you are after around $140 USD. Lastly, for that little niche of people, save your money and buy one that's $250 USD or more for your really clear and exemplary display.
Jaw Dropping!
I really wasnt sure what to expect. But once i pulled it out of the box, i was stunned! It has an amazing picture quality, and a good response time! I might get another one to run dual screens! Amazing monitor for the money!
