In The Children's Book of Virtues, William J. Bennett and Michael Hague have created a spectacular compilation of timeless stories, poems, songs, and folktales in which every family can find an inexhaustible store of delight and inspiration. Containing the complete text and illustrations from their three earlier collaborations -- The Children's Book of Virtues, The Children's Book of Heroes, and The Children's Book of America -- this vital anthology belongs on the bookshelf of every home.
In The Children's Book of Virtues, parents can introduce their children to stories and poems by Aesop, Robert Frost, and more, illustrating the essential components of virtue: Courage, Perseverance, Responsibility, Work, Self-Discipline, Compassion, Faith, Honesty, Loyalty, and Friendship. From "St. George and the Dragon" to "George Washington and the Cherry Tree," here are tales to cherish forever.
In The Children's Book of Heroes, families will find examples of heroism illustrated by stories ancient and new. Here are Theseus and the Minotaur, David and Goliath, Jackie Robinson, Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller. As the author writes, "We all need a hero or two to help us stand fast and think right."
From Robert E. Lee tending a wounded soldier to Abigail Adams's bravery, to Martin Luther King's dream, to Walt Whitman listening to America sing, The Children's Book of America completes the trilogy with an unforgettable celebration of our nation's history and character.
Filled with wonderful paintings by Michael Hague, each one especially commissioned for the three earlier books, and introduced and edited by William J. Bennett, The Children's Treasury of Virtues is an unforgettable celebration of the traits that are the essential building blocks of good character, heroic deeds, and a great nation.
This volume contains the complete text of the The Children's Book of Virtues, The Children's Book of Heroes, and The Children's Book of America

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Review
Conservative champion of ethics William J. Bennett loves to write primers on character building. This hefty three-part treasury brings together three of Bennett's previous primers aimed for young children: The Children's Book of Virtues, The Children's Book of Heroes, and The Children's Book of America. In his new introduction, Bennett explains why he believes stories are the key to raising morally sound children. "Even in an age of computer games and electronic toys, you can't beat a good story--especially when offered by a caring adult--for capturing a child's attention," he writes. "Legends, folk tales, biographies, and poems ... serve as reference points on a moral compass, giving children a clear sense of direction in matters of right and wrong."
Even folks who don't agree with Bennett's politics often agree with the overriding lessons in these age-old stories. Famous selections include, "St. George and the Dragon," "George Washington and the Cherry Tree," tributes to Abraham Lincoln and Jackie Robinson, and Martin Luther King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Put this lavishly illustrated book by a child's bed so he or she can revisit these stories before drifting off to sleep. After all, this is the stuff that great dreams are made of. --Gail Hudson

Customer Reviews
I (the Dad) enjoy reading it
to my children. But they seem to prefer other books. They mostly enjoy the time we spend together reading. Perhaps the stories themselves may yeild fruit for them sometime down the road. I'm glad I bought it and read it with my children.
A series of teachable moments just waiting for you
This book is a beautiful source of morality tales for young children. It has full color illustrations on every page. It's stories range from poems of just a few lines to longer tales several pages long. My five year old really enjoys listening and looking at the lovely pictures at bedtime.
The stories all illustrate a virtue or value, and make wonderful springboards into discussions about right and wrong.
A beautiful book!
This book is well worth the money for its content and unique illustrations.
