Product Description

Ace UK's The Very Best of Jackie Wilson is true to its title, from the swinging, post-doo wop exuberance of 1957's Reet Petite (The Finest Girl You Ever Want to Meet) to the orchestrated deep soul of 1971's Love is Funny That Way. All of Wilson's best-known cuts are here, including the string-sweetened ballad Night, the driving, dance floor summons Baby Workout, and Wilson's excellent 1967 version of Gary Jackson's Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher. Here too, of course, is Wilson's signature song Lonely Teardrops, an impassioned, yearning slice of pop perfection. Wilson's particular skill was blending an R&B edge with pop accessibility, and his supple, soaring tenor was well suited to ballads, mid-tempo shuffles, and sweaty, high-octane rave-ups alike. At 24 tracks, Ace's compilation gives fine samples of each, and differs from other sets in its inclusion of more cuts from Wilson's later career. It makes a convincing case for Wilson as one of the most dynamic, talented, and memorable performers of the era.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Among the greatest rock & roll singers ever, and maybe the most technically accomplished vocalist of the rock era, Jackie Wilson is an R&B legend. His sky-high range, intense emotionalism, and jaw-dropping stage presence have influenced nearly every significant R&B singer from James Brown to Michael Jackson. This 24-song collection ranges from his earliest hit, "Reet Petite (The Finest Girl You Ever Want To Meet)"--as giddy an expression of pure joy as may ever have been put to vinyl--all the way up to later hits like the glorious Motown-style 1966 smash "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher and Higher)." --David Cantwell

Jackie Wilson is another example of a superstar whose accomplishments are forgotten or neglected by history. An aspiring opera singer, a former boxer;he was a man who's vocal range was remarkable. He was one of the few artists that charted on both the rhythm and blues and pop charts.Jackie was so charismatic that his mere smile would have women swooning in groves.Jackie, not Teddy Pendergrast, was the one who originally hosted 'women only' concerts,to standing-room audiences! This collection lacks two important songs-"At Last" and "Danny Boy"The latter is one of the most heart-felt and vocally beautiful rendering of any song I've ever heard. The former is one of his charted pop tunes ,and showed the amazing versatility of the man. Jackie was the original "hardest working man in show business" long before James Brown claimed the title, and his boxing background enabled him to demonstrate some mind-blowing moves on stage.I hope God "lifted him higher."
