Editorial Reviews

Neal Hellman
A rare treat for lovers of string band music & a treasure trove for students of the War Between the States.

About the Artist
Jim Taylor first became interested in traditional music in the early 1980s when a friend lent him some Jean Ritchie albums and mountain dulcimer recordings. Soon afterward, he heard the hammered dulcimer and decided to learn to play it. While in school in Texas, he had the opportunity to learn from folks like Russell Cook and Dana Hamilton. He was also influenced by Jerry Reed Smith and Malcolm Dalglish.

In 1982, Jim started building his own hammered dulcimers. Apart from the music, Jim has a master's degree in American History, and reenacts the Civil War every month or so, participating as a Confederate sergeant.

Album Description
Jim Taylor's second collection. This recording, along with the first volume, is a collection of toe-tapping campfire tunes, barn dance music, and minstrel show melodies that were current around the time of the Civil War.

Absolutely Excellent Old Time Historic Folk Music!5
For all of us that were traumatized by their high school history class, let's call this old time Bluegrass or Folk Music. This is a repeat of their first Civil War volume, and this review is a repeat of my admiration for the first volume. This CD is a bit slower paced and adds a Tin Whistle. I like to play my Irish Drum, Bones and Spoons to the first album. I like to play my Bouzouki, Banjo and Guitar to the second. Thank you for the Irish influence. My ancestors fought on both sides of the Civil War. That makes a lot of sense, Irish killing Irish under generals with English last names. A strange twist of fate. Unfortunately, this was one of the only alternatives to the Great Potato Famine back in the motherland. What if they put down their rifles and picked up their instruments and had a huge jam session instead of a war? Please read my review of the first album. The back up guitar in this album stands out more, and I love the skillful "bridge" transitions between chords. If the Jim Taylor group wants to keep making these CD's, I'll keep buying them. This is old time music at its best by an excellent group.

Music Lover5
If you liked Jim Taylor first "Civil War Collection" you will love this one as well. Jim's Civil War Collections 1 and 2 are a must for anyone interested in Civil War music or in general Old Time music. I highly recommend, you will not be disappointed.
