A simple, helpful book on the use of cognitive strategies to challenge self-doubt and increase self-confidence
Overall, this is a useful little book. The authors, Doctors Leslie Sokol and Marci Fox, are both long-time associates of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research. In Think Confident, Be Confident, Drs. Sokol and Fox utilize the principles of cognitive therapy to target self-doubt and the detrimental effects that it can have on one's moods, actions, motivation, and ultimately, self-confidence. They do this by utilizing a 4-step approach to conquering doubt (Label It, Question It, Rethink It, and Take Action).
Although the ideas offered here are clearly not new, the authors present their information in a manner that is extremely accessible to the average reader and that is also appropriate to a self-help format. Regarding the latter, this book is likely to appeal to readers of that genre, particularly given that is fairly short, uses simple language, and contains helpful exercises. As a psychologist myself, I believe that challenging negative thinking patterns is an effective strategy for many types of concerns, and thus much of my own work utilizes a cognitive approach. Given this, I would recommend Think Confident, Be Confident to readers who are motivated to work on addressing their dysfunctional thinking patterns on their own.
Need a Boost?
Think Confident, Be Confident uses everyday examples which I found I could relate. I never realized that the gestures from others that (purposely or accidentally) make you feel inferior can be naturally ignored by easily retraining your brain - really. This books is worth a look and is filled with fun workbook style exercises.
A Best Seller for Sure.
"Think Confident. Be Confident" is an awesome book.
I was introduced to the concept of Cognitive Therapy many years ago through a book that was written by one of Dr. Sokol's collegues, Dr. Beck ofThe Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy. That book helped save my life. That book was for then. This book is for now.
Not only does this book help you with self doubt, it teaches you a more positive and realistic way of thinking overall. Not through "happy talk", but by giving you tools that are necessary for confident thinking and being. The main tool is the evidence that you have what it takes for self confidence, making this book a "must read" for everyone.
