From Publishers Weekly
Three boys create mayhem while scrambling for their science fair project. "Auch fuels her novel with funny, flippant dialogue and clever one-liners," said PW. Ages 7-10. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4AJosh and his best friend, Brian, the class brain, team up for their science project. While Josh takes a passive interest in it, Brian comes up with the idea of hypnotizing his dog, Arful, into thinking he's a cat. Back at school, the boys reluctantly admit the unlikable Dougie onto their team. During the course of the experiment, Josh becomes entranced by Brian's hypnotic swinging crystal. As time passes, it's hard to determine if Arful is any different, yet subtle changes in Josh's behavior begin to emerge. When they attempt to demonstrate their project at Parent's Night, it becomes clear to the boys that Josh has been inadvertently hypnotized and thinks he's a cat. Surprisingly, it's Dougie who saves the day. This well-written story is neatly constructed and has a funny, clever ending. The action moves quickly and the dialogue is natural. Josh is a likable character with whom readers will readily identify. The average-quality black-and-white cartoons add nothing to the text. Still, this is an entertaining tale for those who aren't quite ready for science-experiment-gone-wrong titles such as Dean Hughes's Nutty Knows All (Aladdin, 1991).ALucy Rafael, The Center for Early Education, West Hollywood,

From Booklist
Gr. 2^-4. Three classmates' efforts to hypnotize a dog as a science project go hilariously awry in this short chapter book. It's Brian "Brain" Lewis' idea. As Josh holds Brian's big old dog Arful still and Dougie looks on, laughing, Brian swings a crystal, intoning over and over, "You are a caaaaat." Arful is not visibly affected, but Josh starts trading his lunch for a schoolmate's sushi, falling asleep in class, and walking with a distinctively feline gait. He sees nothing unusual about his behavior, not even during the science fair when another project's catnip mouse sets him frisking about the stage. Only then do his teammates cotton to what has happened and frantically reverse the posthypnotic suggestion: "When I snap my fingers, you will wake up and be a boy." Suddenly, the trio hears a new voice: "I want a pepperoni pizza." Yes, it's Arful. "Whoa!" exclaims Dougie. "We're winning next year's science fair for sure!" Auch's wisecracking third-graders and superb comic timing will have readers rolling on the floor. Pair this with S. E. Hinton's Puppy Sister (1995). John Peters
