From the Manufacturer
Enjoy a superior home theater audio performance without investing in expensive and space-consuming loudspeakers with the Definitive Technology ProCinema system, a line of compact satellite speakers, center channel speakers, and subwoofers that produces incredible sound at an affordable price. The biggest challenge in designing a sub/sat system is to engineer small satellites with a frequency response that extends low enough to blend properly with the subwoofer. Definitive Technologies overcame this challenge with the ProCinema series by engineering pressure-coupled medite passive radiators into the satellites and center channel speakers (the radiators are upward firing in the sats and side firing in the centers). These radiators dramatically improve the low frequency response while also delivering better linearity, improved transient response, and lower distortion. In addition, Definitive outfitted the speakers with BDSS technology, a patent-pending driver technology that couples a unique balanced double surround system--at both the apex and outer edge of the cone--with a precisely engineered central waveguide. BDSS produces a smoother response, greatly improved dynamic range, and dynamic stability, all essentials for elite home theater performance.

Sonically, the ProCinema speakers are a revelation in terms of producing incredible sound at an affordable price. Their imaging is absolutely boxless, spacious, and three-dimensional, with pinpoint specificity and localization when appropriate. Not only are they silky smooth with a "you are there" presence--unique at any price and unheard of in their price range--but they're capable of great subtlety as well. It all adds up to an immersive surround sound performance that excels whether you're watching movies or listening to music.

This particular unit--the ProSub 800 subwoofer--produces true state-of-the-art bass performance thanks to such features as a built-in, high-power, high-current amplifier, sophisticated electronic crossovers, and a high-definition 8-inch woofer with a polymer cone coupled to a single 8-inch infrasonic radiator. All of Definitive's ProSub powered subwoofers incorporate the company's patented, digitally coupled Infinite Power Source amplifiers--300 watts RMS in the case of the ProSub 800--with high-current direct coupled power supplies and discrete MOSFET output devices helping ensure perfect high-definition resolution and reproduction. The sub's construction quality is also topnotch, with only the highest-quality components used, including mil-spec glass epoxy circuit boards and precision resistors and capacitors. The powerful high-definition drivers, meanwhile, were specifically engineered by Definitive to deliver rock-solid low-distortion bass that reaches down to the lowest subsonic frequencies, with an outstanding quality of superior transient response unequaled in the world. Add in a continuously adjustable low-pass filter control--which allows you to choose a roll-off from 40 to 150 Hz for the high end of the subwoofer--and you have an ideal subwoofer to blend into your ProCinema system.

The ProSub 800 is housed in a matte black monocoque cabinet that's engineered to be totally inert and vibration-free. The cabinet walls themselves are high-density medite fused together by space-age polymer adhesives, with extra-thick front and rear baffles. Finally, the cabinet incorporates multiple internal braces to ensure total solidity. Connectivity options include (high) speaker level and low-level inputs (for receivers that don't have a subwoofer output), along with a separate direct-in LFE low-level input that bypasses the crossover network. The LFE input may be used by itself or in combination with left and right channel high- or low-level inputs for the ultimate in subwoofer flexibility and performance.

Choosing Definitive Technology Speakers for Your Home

Definitive Technology offers many quality speakers that are just right for your home. Which speaker, or set of speakers, you choose depends on how much you are willing to spend and which features you prioritize in a home theater environment. All of Definitive Technology's speakers are audiophile-engineered, designer-styled loudspeakers intended for musical reproduction and home theater systems of the highest quality. Thousands of man-hours of critical listening and engineering utilizing the most advanced computer loudspeaker development programs available--along with fundamental research at the world's most advanced loudspeaker research facility--have combined to create unmatched instruments for the reproduction of music or movies in your home.
  • ProMonitor 800 Bookshelf Speaker: Enjoy a superior home theater audio performance without investing in expensive and space-consuming loudspeakers with the Definitive Technology ProCinema system, a line of compact satellite speakers, center channel speakers, and subwoofers that produces incredible sound at an affordable price. • ProMonitor 1000 Bookshelf Speaker: The ProMonitor 1000 satellite speaker excels whether matched with a second ProMonitor 1000 in a stereo setup or when teamed with three additional satellites in a surround sound system. Each speaker is equipped with a single 5.25-inch cast-basket bass/midrange driver, a single 5.25-inch pressure-driven planar low-frequency radiator, and a 1-inch pure aluminum dome tweeter. The drivers combine to produce ultra-smooth, high-definition clarity and a tremendous dynamic range, with a wide-ranging frequency response of 47 Hz to 30 kHz--a notable accomplishment for such a small speaker. The ProMonitor 1000s sound particularly good when teamed with a ProSub subwoofer and a ProCenter center channel speaker, creating an immersive home theater environment capable of fitting in just about any room, including small living rooms and bedrooms.
  • ProCenter 1000 Center Channel Speaker: The ProCenter 1000 center channel speaker helps produce truly astounding dialogue when teamed with ProMonitor satellite speakers and a ProSub subwoofer. A center channel loudspeaker is the heavy lifter of your multichannel home theater system, as it delivers more than 50 percent of movie soundtrack information in a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack mix. Fortunately, the ProCenter 1000 tackles this workload with ease thanks to its pair of 4.5-inch die-cast-basket bass/midrange drivers, which take the frequency response down to 47 Hz when teamed with the pair of 4.5-inch pressure-driven planar low-frequency radiators. The speaker also includes a 1-inch, wide-dispersion pure aluminum dome tweeter to handle the high frequencies, along with a resonant monocoque cabinet. The end result is a wide dynamic soundstage with an extra-large sweet spot, ensuring that everyone in the room hears every detail.

    Like Gold!5
So I started with a $150.00 subwoofer (private label through Circuit city). It was rated a 4.8 out of 5 so I gave it shot. Everbody said "great sub for the money". Well it was just that, it was extremely muddy sounding. Then I went to a Klipsh Synergy 10" for $280 through Best Buy. Again great reviews, plus it was $120 off the $399 retail. Much clearer in sound, great power and fills the room BUT the sub had terrible definition for bass guitar. Sooo I finally just stepped it up and spent the extra buck (and came across a deal) to go to the Definitive Tech ProSub 800. WOW what a difference! Not only did the bass rolloff like a waterfall but the definition was perfection. The funniest thing is that this has to be the SMALLEST, MOST, POWERFUL sub on the market. Everything I saw was obnoxious in size...this thing is so small! So if you aren't able to hide your sub behind anything, this unit can easily be out in the open and not be a distraction. My sub is paired up with(2) ProMontior 800 front speakers and Yamaha V663 receiver. I also had (2) existing in-wall Jamo speakers for surround. All together the system sounds phenomonal for music...plus its all so small and clean looking. I have an open concept space (vaulted ceiling and loft). Combo great room and dining room is about 525 sq. ft and the sound radiants thougout the space.
I was lucky enough to get this ProSub with minor cosmetic damage on Amazon for $299. After hearing and seeing it, I would highly recommend this sub for $399, personally I think they could get away with $499 since it offers premium bass definition in such a industry leading small size.

    Best Sub on the Market!5
I'm very satisfied with the sound and functionality of the Definitive sub. The bass is bone-rattling and will shake your whole house, but it is very clean sounding with no vibration in the case itself. I've got it connected with a single Monster subwoofer cable to my Onkyo receiver. Very easy setup. The appearance is very elegant. I like the volume control on the side. The Prosub 800 is perfect for a small living room.

The only gripe I have is that it has an auto-off feature. If the sub doesn't receive a bass signal after about an hour, it shuts off. So when I'm watching a TV program or movie with lots of dialogue it will shut off and then pop back on (with a noticeable popping sound) when there is either an explosion or loud music. It is a small gripe because you never have to worry about leaving it on accidentally.

Listening to music is a dream with this sub. I'm in to rock and heavy metal, so this sub makes it seem as though a machine gun is going off in my house (scares the dog). I love it.

    Worth every penny5
Bought this sub after weeks of research and testing. I tested everything from definitive tech, phase tech, mirage, klipsch, polk, and many others and this sub fit the bill in both size and sound quality for my 17x13 room. Because it is down firing you feel very explosion the seat of the pants no matter where the sub is located. If your looking for some thump in a small package you cant go wrong with this sub.
