![]() | Delsey Helium Fusion 29" Expandable Suiter Trolley
Buy new: $83.19 - $129.99 This is a decent suitcase. It is big and fairly light for it's immense size. I was able to fit most of my things inside it for three months. However, it tips over when it is full which is very annoying.
![]() | Rick Steves Packing Cube Set
Buy new: $15.26 - $20.70 These were very useful for organizing my suitcase for the trip over and especially in my pack while backpacking. I used the 2 smaller ones, one for socks and underwear and the other for tech stuff (chargers, power cords, internet cables, webcam). They are very helpful.
![]() | ITW Space Bag BRS-6239 Vacuum-Seal Storage Bags, Combo Pack, Set of 3
Buy new: $14.10 / Used from: $9.99 Vacuum bags are essential if you pack a lot of stuff. The good news is that these work. The air gets sucked out and it really compresses things down, making it easier to fit lots of things in your bag. The bad news is that they can rip pretty easily so you have to be very careful not to overpack them. If you're careful, these are great!
![]() | Eagle Creek Pack-It® Wallaby II
Buy new: $32.00 - $35.45 A great invention! All of your toiletries go inside and then the pack folds and zips up into a convenient hanging pack. There is a mirror inside and plenty of room for your toiletries. When you reach your destination, just unzip and hang on the door and you have easy access to everything.
![]() | Johnson S C Inc 00390 Sandwich Bag
Buy new: $3.29 Put your toiletries in ziploc bags so if something leaks it doesn't get all over your suitcase and clothes.
![]() | EAGLE CREEK VOYAGE 65L BACKPACK
My pack for backpacking. I did a lot of research before buying it and it seems like a great pack for short travels (1-2 weeks). It is very roomy and features a detachable day pack so you don't have to carry all of your stuff around (assuming you have somewhere to stow you pack safely, like in a hostel locker).
![]() | Kelty Redwing 3100 Backpack
Buy new: $84.95 - $109.95 This is as close as I can find to the pack that I have, which is a Kelty Mica. I bought my Mica going to college, looking for a sturdy backpack to use for books. Kelty makes really great sturdy, comfortable packs. I am using my Mica for my books here and also for day trips around town in London. Get one of the cheaper ($50) day packs to use as a bookbag and you won't regret it!
![]() | Lewis N. Clark Toothbrush Holder
Buy new: $3.00 It doesn't have to be this one (it's the first one I found) but you'll want one of these to keep your toothbrush from getting icky. I brought 2 toothbrushes, one in my Toiletry kit and one in my carry-on backpack for airport brushings.
![]() | Scottevest Ultimate Hoodie Microfleece
Buy new: $70.00 You can read my product review for my specific feelings on the sweatshirt. It is completely worth the price tag...I wore it almost constantly.
It was indispensable for my trip abroad, whether it was keeping me warm in wintry London, holding all of my gadgets for easy screening at the airport or providing a comfortable layer for lounging in the dorms.
![]() | Columbia Sportswear Men's Double Whammy Jacket
Buy new: $101.49 - $147.98 This is the closest model I could find to my Columbia coat. They make great, durable coats. Here are some features to look for: An outside chest pocket for things like your Subway card, hand pockets that zip up to keep things you don't want stolen safe and to keep your gloves from falling out, inside zip chest pocket (to keep camera/wallet in because it's concealed but easily accessible)
![]() | Flip Top Glove / Mitt - Insulated, size - M, L, XL
Buy new: $33.99 - $37.99 I do not own this particular set of mittens, but this is the kind that I recommend. The mitten top flips up to reveal the finger less gloves which are great to use when it's a bit warmer and you need to be able to use your fingers (opening things/zipping zippers, etc) and you can flip the mitten down when you're cold and just walking about.
![]() | Dr. Martens Women's 1B60 Boot
Buy new: $104.90 - $149.90 If you're traveling in the UK in the winter you'll need a pair of good, sturdy, waterproof boots because it rains all the time. I do not own these, but my Finnish roommate has them and absolutely loves them. Maybe I'll buy a pair too.
![]() | Apple iPod nano 8 GB Blue (4th Generation) OLD MODEL
Buy new: $149.99 / Used from: $84.99 Not much of a description needed here...great product and very necessary for long plane and train rides.
![]() | Fujifilm FinePix F20 - 43870065
Buy used from: $142.99 One of the best cheap compact cameras. It has great color resolution, great LCD screen, and is fairly light and compact. Bad news, it has some low light problems (really blurry at night), it uses the less popular xd card, and short battery life. I would buy another NP-70 Lithium Battery and the rapid travel charger to make sure that you don't miss a single fabulous shot.
![]() | Timex Midsize Expedition Classic Digital Multi-Function Watch #T46041
Buy used from: $29.99 Best watch I have found. It is a nice smaller version of the Timex Expedition, perfect for women. The band is a comfortable combination of leather and mesh and withstands a lot of abuse. The only downside is that it is not the most attractive watch out there and so cannot be worn as a dressy option.
![]() | HUE HD Green PC / Mac Webcam from Clique
Buy new: $94.95 A webcam so you can call home on the free Skype to Skype calling. You can also use the mic and Skype a US landline for just $0.02 a minute, a FANTASTIC deal.
Clique webcam is nice because you can plug it directly into your computer and it is flexible and easy to use. The mic is pretty good and so is the video picture. Shop around and find it cheaper than the $100 here.
![]() | Motorola Motofone F3 Unlocked Phone with Quad-Band GSM 850/1900--International Version with No Warranty (Black)
Buy new: $28.80 Once again, just a way to tell you about something else. Go to Carphone Warehouse in London and buy a pre-pay phone for 4 pounds ($6) and put as much as you like on it. On the Virgin network it's .20p a minute to call the US and .15p to call in the UK.
![]() | Rick Steves' Best of Europe 2009 by Rick Steves
Buy used from: $0.83 The Rick Steves books are the best on the market! They have listings of major attractions, ratings, hotels and restaurants including cost and itinerary suggestions. You have to buy them! I have Europe 2008, but I'm sure the updated version is great too.
![]() | Moleskine City Notebook London (Moleskine City Notebooks) by Moleskine
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $4.98 A wonderful travel companion! I carry this notebook everywhere to jot down my thoughts and adventures. It is a sturdy Moleskine product and I recommend that you get one.
Keeping a diary of your adventures somewhere else is a memento that you will treasure for the rest of your life!
![]() | All Things Wise and Wonderful/the Lord God Made Them All by James Herriot
Buy used from: $1.68 Everyone needs a travel inspiration...and this was mine. Wonderful, funny, touching...this series has it all. My inspiration for coming to England.
![]() | Fleece Throw / Travel Blanket by CTM
Buy new: $8.95 Again, not necessarily this product (the one I have I bought from Walmart for $10) but a fleece blanket is really nice to have on the plane ride when it gets cold (and it will). Make sure that you have one that folds up very small or you won't be able to fit much else in your carry-on.
![]() | Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow
Buy new: $17.95 - $22.95 Not a bad bargin. This pillow rolls up to a moderately small size and moderately comfortable when unrolled. Let's put it this way...it's more comfortable than sleeping on your arm or on your folded up towel. I have found that it's worth the extra space it takes up in your backpack while traveling to hostels (don't worry about taking it just for the plane ride, though).
![]() | Silk Sleep Sack - Blue (84x36")
Buy new: Too low to display You'll need a sleep sack if you're going to be staying in Hostels because many of them do not provided linens (or make you pay for cheap scratchy ones). Silk is nice because it feels great and is lightweight. The cons are that it gets staticky and it's a bit hard to get back into the pouch it comes in.
![]() | Lewis N Clark Grounded Adapter Plug Britain & Africa
Buy new: $7.94 You'll need plug adapters going to Europe. Make sure you check and make sure everything you try to plug in has automatic voltage adaptation (just look at the box on the plug) and if it doesn't you'll need a voltage adapter also. This is VERY IMPORTANT or you may ruin something you brought with you (and also perhaps start a small fire).
![]() | Victorinox Swiss Army Classic Pocket Knife
Buy new: $8.21 - $26.99 It never hurts to be prepared! The classic Swiss Army knife makes sure that you're prepared for whatever comes your way. And, if you can figure out a purpose for all of those functions...let me know.
![]() | Loud 125db Personal Alarm w/ Flashing Light, Key Chain & Window Warning Decal
This is another safety device that is great to carry with you. It's legal everywhere (unlike mace), it can be activated with one hand, and it's harder to turn off than the pin-activated one and while an attacker tries to turn it off, you can run.
![]() | Professional Tools TOENAIL & FINGERNAIL Nail Clipper Cutter
It's easy to forget these, but they are really important, especially for extended trips. They can also double as scissors for somethings in a pinch. (But, if you have your Swiss Army Knife you're ok in the scissor department).
![]() | Cain and Able Bath Sponge
Buy new: $4.13 These are nice because you can just throw them away when you're finished. Also, after a shower, you can squeeze out the water in a towel and store it in your caddy (in a plastic bag) and it dries MUCH quicker than a washcloth.
It's still good to bring a small washcloth for you face, though. Or, if you're not finicky about stuff like that, you can always use a corner of your towel.
![]() | Eastbay Basic Flip Flop - Men's
Buy new: $4.99 - $6.99 Shower shoes are a must! Whether it's in your dorm's squirely showers or the even sketchier hostel showers you must have a pair of flip flops. Mine are from Walmart and cost about $1.
![]() | Mesh Pop-Up Hamper - Single, Red (14 x 23)
Buy new: $4.24 / Used from: $4.25 This folds up completely flat and fits in the bottom of your suitcase. I used it for carrying my laundry to the laundromat, but you can use it to store and carry lots of things. It takes up no room and is endlessly useful!
![]() | Lanyard Key-ID-Badge-Reel Holder With Snap Clip And Split Ring
Buy new: $1.99 Don't forget to bring something to keep track of your keys! I like the snaps better than the key rings because it's easier to get the keys on and off if you need them.
![]() | Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Magician Mickey and Pluto Animated Figurine 2-Pack
Buy new: $24.44 Bring something with you that you can give friends and/or hosts as a gift. Something unique from your home town, state, college or country (hence the Mickey Mouse) is great!
![]() | Imodium A-D Anti-Diarrhea, 72-Count Caplets
Buy new: $17.89 You're going to a new country with different food and different bugs in the water...and no matter how hard you try it will have a negative effect on you at some point. Just suck it up and be ready to deal with it.
![]() | Brunton Classic Compass
Buy new: $11.79 A small compact compass is really great when you're lost and staring at your map and can't figure out which way to hold the map and everyone is French and refuses to be polite to you.
