Writer's Market 2006
Not as good as previous issues. I think they rushed to get this one out. A lot of current listings that are good are not included. I know they are good because I have sold features to them recently. Either the publisher of the Digest couldn't wait to get their input for the volume or sources did not want to offer the information for some reason.
I also submitted several queries to editors/magazines listed in the volume only to be told that they do not accept freelance queries. When I asked one editor why her publication, with specific guidelines for queries was in the volume when she said she did not use any contributed material or freelance writers, she said she did not know where the digest got their information, but she certainly did not provide it and was not happy that it was there.
This has happened 4 times. I have gone back to using the 2005 volume which seems to be much more up to date. I am very disappointed.
Online access dysfunctional and book inaccurate
I really wanted to like this product and had high hopes for its usefulness but the book has been revised in such a fashion that it is relatively unhelpful compared to older editions.
I think they want to steer users to the online component, which I am much in favor of.
Regretably, I had a great deal of trouble using the access code included with the book, and found writers market's customer service non-responsive.
The enrollment email I received "confirming" my free 1 year membership features no less than 4 links that do not work (such as FAQs, contact info, etc. for Writersmarket.com) and when I login it tells me my account needs renewal.
In short, they really dont have their act together online, it seems kludgy and poorly managed. So add up an out of date and limited book with dysfunctional web products and you have a major disappointment.
I will go back to my older editions of the book--while out of date at least the basic info is there. And I won't buy again from writersmarket. Too bad, they were quite a good resource once.
It is like opening a treasure chest.
The writing field ahs gotten too massive to put everything you ever wanted to know into one book. Every the listings alone would make a book larger then you telephone book. On the other hand if you were to buy every book you need to cover all the bases then you would have to buy and maintain a library and update it every year.
So whether you are focused on one form or field in writing or you are diverse this is the best book to start with. The main focus of the book is still on writing and has something for everyone.
There is not enough room here to describe all the contents of this book. However If you start out from the front it will take you several days to read sand digest before you even thing of activating the 1-year online subscription. I find it interesting to re-read many articles that I already know about and say "I know that." However there are two main advantages in this exercise. First you reinforce what you already know. Second there just might be something new or a new way of looking at tine information.
As with a treasure chest there are all kinds of hidden or not so hidden goodies in this book. Every thing from how to read it to a free book mark that can be used as a quick card. The pages are well indexed for those that tend to skip over all the good stuff and hit the deck running.
Whether you are just starting out or have been in the business for years it would be embarrassing to be caught with out this book. This is one of the major books of the trade.
As usual this book is an annual so getting the latest version is imperative; however there is more to this book than just addresses. The tips and information on writing and making contact is timeless. The book is also keeping for a historical view on the how writing and contacts evolve.
