Young Adult Literature for Teens who Think
By an Amazon.com customer
If I StayIf I Stay by Gayle Forman
Buy new: $9.93 / Used from: $6.79
This is a tender, thought provoking book about a young musician named Mia who suddenly must decide whether to join her family in the afterlife or stay alive. I enjoyed the unique premise and strong set of characters, as well as Mia's passion for cello..
Alanna: The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness, Book 1)Alanna: The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness, Book 1) by Tamora Pierce
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.84
Really, all of the Alanna books deserve to be on here. Tamora Pierce's classic tale of the lady knight, Alanna, deserves to be read by all girls interested in strong heroines and fantasy.
Someone Like YouSomeone Like You by Sarah Dessen
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.98
Most of Dessen's current books center around girls with difficult problems being "cured" by their relationships with guys, but Someone Like You, Dessen's second novel, is a wonderful life of life of her protagonist, Halley.
GracelingGraceling by Kristin Cashore
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $4.78
This is one of my new favorite books! Kristin Cashore has created a strong fantasy land and heroine, Katsa. What makes Graceling especially strong is Katsa's change over the course of the novel, and her realization about her own strengths and humanity.
The Bermudez TriangleThe Bermudez Triangle by Maureen Johnson
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
This was my first (and to date, only) experience with Ms. Johnson's books. It tells the story of three best friends, Mel, Avery, and Nina, and how their friendship faces challenges when Nina goes away to camp and Mel and Avery begin a relationship with each other.
Harry Potter Boxset Books 1-7Harry Potter Boxset Books 1-7 by J. K. Rowling
Buy new: $114.07 / Used from: $72.00
Call me cliche, but there's nothing like a Harry Potter fix about J.K. Rowling's famous boy wizard. These books' intricate mysteries, classical themes of good versus evil, quirky characters, and strong magical world will stand the test of time.
The World of Alice (Boxed Set): The Agony of Alice; Alice in Rapture, Sort Of; Reluctantly Alice; All but AliceThe World of Alice (Boxed Set): The Agony of Alice; Alice in Rapture, Sort Of; Reluctantly Alice; All but Alice by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Buy used from: $16.26
The Alice series are some of my favorite books ever! They are about the quirky, very true to life adventures of Alice McKinley, initially a motherless sixth grader when the story begins and an about to be senior in high school by the last edition. I have included the first four books in the original Alice series, but Alice only gets better when she is older.
Speak: 10th Anniversary EditionSpeak: 10th Anniversary Edition by Laurie Halse Anderson
Buy new: $8.63 / Used from: $5.99
Laurie Halse Anderson is amazing! Speak tells the tale of Melina and her difficult freshman year, hiding a dark secret that is slowly pulling her apart. Her dry observations are spot on, and at several points, I found myself thinking, "That's so true!" You will utterly and complete relate to Melinda's take on high school.
WintergirlsWintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $8.50
In Anderson's latest Young Adult novel, she tells the tale of Lia, an anorexic whose best friend just died as a result of severe bulimia. This, as the title suggests, is a very haunting and not at all easy to read story of anorexia, but Anderson's writing is truly amazing and will stay with you long after the last page.
A Northern LightA Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly
Buy new: $8.95 / Used from: $0.01
I don't normally read historical fiction, but I picked this up in a bookstore and am SO glad I read it. It tells the story of Mattie and her struggle to balance her desire to go to college and pursue a career in writing or work on the farm and take care of her younger sisters, as she promised her mother before she died, tied in with details of a real historical mystery.
Sloppy Firsts: A Jessica Darling NovelSloppy Firsts: A Jessica Darling Novel by Megan McCafferty
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.01
The first and most teen friendly novel in the Jessica Darling series chronicles Jessica's sophomore and junior years of high school after her best friend, Hope, moves away. Although in quite a different way than Melinda's in Speak, Jessica's cynical observations of high school are also spot on, and her teen angst is written especially well.
Story of a GirlStory of a Girl by Sara Zarr
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.90
Sara Zarr's tender prose tells the story of sixteen-year-old Deanna and her struggle for forgiveness three years after her father has caught her in the backseat of a car with a boy. In spite of the subject matter, Zarr provides much less graphicness in terms of the sex than most YA authors and handles the subject well.
True Believer (Make Lemonade Trilogy)True Believer (Make Lemonade Trilogy) by Virginia Euwer Wolff
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
In this second book of the Make Lemonade Trilogy, Wolff tells the story of LaVaughn, an Urban high schooler, determined to go to college, and the changing world around her.
The Mozart SeasonThe Mozart Season by Virginia Euwer Wolff
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.25
As I mentioned before, as an artist, I am especially attracted to books about characters with passions. Still, twelve-year-old Allegra's journey to prepare for a violin competition at the end of the summer ends up teaching her far more than just music by the end.
Sisterhood 4-book boxed setSisterhood 4-book boxed set by Ann Brashares
Buy new: $15.10 / Used from: $15.09
Ann Brashares is another teen author who is spot on at creating strong characters and brushing important issues. The funny, yet often heartwarming and tear jerking summer adventures of Lena, Carmen, Bridget, and Tibby and their shared pair of pants are some of my favorite books to reread over and over again.
3 Willows: The Sisterhood Grows (3 Willows (Hardback))3 Willows: The Sisterhood Grows (3 Willows (Hardback)) by Ann Brashares
Buy new: $12.91 / Used from: $0.38
Although other readers might not enjoy this book as much as the original Sisterhood series, I enjoyed reading about another trio of friends closer to my own age. Brashares is just as honest and touching as she is in the Sisterhood series.
The Secret Life of BeesThe Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
Buy new: $9.75 / Used from: $1.59
Although in all technicality this is an adult book, it is definitely suitable for younger readers. The lyrical writing and story of fourteen-year-old Lily's search for the mother she accidentally shot at four years old will probably have you choking up at several occasions. I loved the movie too, but what really makes the book is Kidd's amazing writing.
Thirteen Reasons WhyThirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
Buy new: $9.17 / Used from: $7.49
This unique, yet eerily relatable story about teenage suicide will change your life reading it. That may seem like a tall order, but it is absolutely true.
A Mango-Shaped SpaceA Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy Mass
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.42
Mass's book might tell about a little known condition, but Mia's struggle to find herself and feelings about feeling different will relate to anyone. Rereading this book gives me a warm, comforted feeling in the pit of my stomach.
The Catcher in the RyeThe Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Buy new: $9.79 / Used from: $3.70
This is necessary for anyone interested in YA. Very much the book that "created" Young Adult literature, A Catcher in the Rye's references might seem dated, but the portrayal of teenage angst and depression have certainly stood the test of time.
Little Women (Signet Classics)Little Women (Signet Classics) by Louisa May Alcott
Buy new: $3.95 / Used from: $1.27
You haven't completely lived until you've read Alcott's touching tales of the four March sisters. It's old, yes. But reading this will show you why it's a classic.
To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Perennial Modern Classics)To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Perennial Modern Classics) by Harper Lee
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $4.40
If your English teachers haven't already forced you to read this book, then it is a MUST READ. A unique coming of age story that combines Scout's childhood in the South during the 1930's and a court case, once you've read this book, you'll never look at prejudice or humanity the same way. This is guaranteed.
ImpossibleImpossible by Nancy Werlin
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.43
I hesitated at the bookstore when picking up this book. Should I read it...? Or should I not...? Well, I did pick this up, and I am SO glad I did. This lyrical, unique book resolves around the lyrics of Scarborough's Fair. It might be fantasy, but it does what all fantasy should; totally lets up suspend disbelief.
Saffy's AngelSaffy's Angel by Hilary McKay
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01
I still haven't read the final book in this series, but the quirky Casson family is definitely one of my favorites. In this first book, thirteen-year-old Saffy hitches a trip to Venice with a new friend to try to discover more about her biological mother-her siblings' aunt-and to find the stone angel she was left in her grandfather's will.
My Sister's KeeperMy Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
Buy used from: $4.89
Again, this is an adult book, but in spite of some graphic scenes, it is appropriate for teens, as it centers around a thirteen-year-old named Anna, who is suing her parents, who was genetically engineered to be the perfect match for her sister with Leukemia. Raises lots of questions to think about.
A Brief Chapter in My Impossible LifeA Brief Chapter in My Impossible Life by Dana Reinhardt
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
This funny, yet very real book that never lectures tells the story of what happens when a girl's biological mother enters her life.
The Nature of JadeThe Nature of Jade by Deb Caletti
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.14
It's chick lit, admittedly, and I am no doubt biased by my own struggle with anxiety, but in spite of this, this is a moving story about senior Jade, whose life has resolved around her panic disorder, but how that begins to change after she sees a boy with a baby through the elephant webcam of the local zoo.
His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass)His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman
Buy new: $15.30 / Used from: $9.45
This is fantasy at its best. You might have heard about the books' religious controversy, but trust me when I say that the strong surrounding world is just as astounding as the religious themes.
Diary of Anne Frank (Imprint Books)Diary of Anne Frank (Imprint Books) by Anne Frank
Buy new: $12.14 / Used from: $10.68
We all know the basic story of Anne Frank and the diary she kept during her stay in the "secret annex", while hiding from the Nazis on account of being Jewish. But what really makes this book appealing to teens is just how much Anne's own aspirations and adolescence is similar to our own.
Red Glass (Readers Circle (Delacorte))Red Glass (Readers Circle (Delacorte)) by Laura Resau
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.25
I'm not Hispanic, but I was entranced by the themes in this story as Sophie makes the journey to Mexico, where her young foster brother must make a difficult decision of whether he will stay with his family or her. What I really enjoyed was seeing Sophie's growth during the story as she becomes a strong, independent woman.
Dairy QueenDairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
I'm not your average fan of chick fics-or football, for that matter-but I really did enjoy this one. Hey, where else can you find a book where a girl is afraid of simply becoming another "cow"? The Wisconsin setting made this absolutely delightful! I haven't read the sequel yet, but I can't wait!
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Alexie, Sherman)The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Alexie, Sherman) by Sherman Alexie
Buy new: $11.04 / Used from: $5.21
Yes, this is hilarious. Yes, this is touching. Yes, it deals with deep themes that sometimes make you want to cry. Yes, it will make you see the sometimes harshness of reservation life and prejudice in a new light. YES, you should read it!
DeadlineDeadline by Chris Crutcher
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.50
The story of a boy who is determined to keep his chronic illness, which will probably kill him in a year's time, might sound depressing, but Crutcher handles this boy's determination to make the most of his last year on earth and how he touches the lives of those surrounding him with humor and grace
The Enchanted Collection Box Set: Ella Enchanted, The Two Princesses of Bamarre, FairestThe Enchanted Collection Box Set: Ella Enchanted, The Two Princesses of Bamarre, Fairest by Gail Carson Levine
Buy new: $14.39 / Used from: $10.83
If you haven't heard of Gail Carson Levine or Ella Enchanted before, what rock have you been living under??? Although her books might be for a slightly younger audience, the strong heroines, unique fantasy worlds, and humor she portrays in her books are enjoyable for any age. Trust me!
The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round ThingsThe Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler
Buy new: $10.03 / Used from: $3.20
Weight is not an easy subject to address well, but Mackler does it. Yet the true story is not really about sophomore Virginia's struggle with weight. No, the true story is how after a shocking turn of events in her family, Virginia, initially unconfident, begins to realize she is far more than how she looks by the end of the book.
The Goose Girl (Books of Bayern)The Goose Girl (Books of Bayern) by Shannon Hale
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.81
Oh, my goodness! Shannon Hale's prose is so positively gorgeous! This retelling of the goose girl tells the story of Ani and how, by a turn of circumstances, she is forced to be a goose girl of the king whose son she is supposed to be married...a turn of events that ends up making her become stronger and gain friends and followers by the end.
Princess AcademyPrincess Academy by Shannon Hale
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $0.73
This is another great book by Shannon Hale! This tells the story of the very small Miri and the princess academy she and all of the other twelve to seventeen-year-olds in her village must attend, so that one will marry the prince. Like all good fantasy, this raises themes that are prominent in our modern world today.
SweetheartsSweethearts by Sara Zarr
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.41
This is a perfect example of how Sara Zarr does not let cliches get the better of her works. Sweethearts is a simple, graceful-yet at second glance not all that simple-tale of two childhood friends and what happens when one of them enters the other's life after years and years apart.
An Abundance of KatherinesAn Abundance of Katherines by John Green
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.28
Although Green's first book, Looking for Alaska, is probably the best introduction to John Green, I am also a big fan of his second, An Abundance of Katherines, the story of Colin, determined to be more than just another washed up child prodigy.
