![]() | The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $5.39 This book is profound in its simplicity. If you're interested in spiritual journeys woven into a good story about a poor shepherd boy who travels in search of a treasure he sees in a dream, this is a book for you. I think everyone should read it.

![]() | By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept: A Novel of Forgiveness (P.S.) by Paulo Coelho
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $7.95 This is an unconventional love story between two old friends, one of whom is a priest. Yes, that and the "feminine face of God" should tell you something about how Coelho uses spiritualism to undermine the rigidity of religion. The ending, which is where the title comes from, is beautiful.

![]() | The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 This is the first of her books I read and I loved it. I read it in Spanish, which fits given the family she's dealing with. It's a great novel in the spirit of magical realism and historical fiction.

![]() | Daughter of Fortune: A Novel (P.S.) by Isabel Allende
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $1.99 I liked Daughter of Fortune better than House of Spirits. It is a much more tightly woven story about one main character who begins her life as an orphan adopted into a well-to-do home and takes her chances on a distant lover, becoming a stowaway on a steamer bound for America during the gold rush.

![]() | Wild Steps of Heaven by Victor Villasenor
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $5.92 This book captures a lot of the Mexican soul in its characters. I loved it, even if it's sad in many ways. It takes place against the backdrop of the Revolution, the class and color distinctions in Mexican society, and manages to tell a few haunting love stories without shying away from the reality of violence Mexico's families endured.

![]() | Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $5.95 I read this in high school, but I would recommend it to anyone who likes magical realism.

![]() | The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner
Buy new: $9.56 / Used from: $3.70 I read this book in a college English course and it is not for the faint-hearted. It takes a bit to get into it because it begins with the perspective of an "idiot." That said, once you get past that and weave it into the wider story of this Southern family, you see it could not have been told any other way. Faulkner is difficult, but this book is amazing.

![]() | Three Junes by Julia Glass
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01 Great characters and a lovely story, if at times sad. You become invested in the lives of this one family and the way stories weave into stories.
|
![]() | The Awakening by Kate Chopin
Buy new: $4.50 / Used from: $0.01 This is the story of a woman born before her time. It is about a woman who lacked the "mother" gene, took a lover, and in the end, refuses to live a life that is not her own to choose. The interesting part of this book is the way she perceives her choices and constraints. Short and excellent.
|
![]() | The Dante Club: A Novel by Matthew Pearl
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Historical fiction that weaves a very dark tale of murder with the backdrop of the civil war and how it affected Boston society. The most interesting point of view is presented by the half-Black police officer who cannot wear a uniform, cannot carry a gun, and cannot arrest a white person without another officer present.
|
![]() | Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $3.00 Dark, dry humor, and a little nonesense. A must read for everyone, especially if you have ever used the phrase but don't know where it comes from.
|
![]() | A Dirty Job: A Novel by Christopher Moore
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $3.32 Irreverant nonsense, but funny as hell. It's the story of a man who loses his wife, gets a new baby, and becomes a Death merchant. Aside from being funny it takes an interesting view of death, souls, and the space in between this life and the next. If you've ever lived in San Francisco it is an extra treat that it is set in the city.
|
![]() | Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01 This is good for a teenager as well as an adult. It is a great story about a boy who chooses three faiths, grows up as a zookeeper's son, and is the sole survivor when his ship sinks. You won't be able to put it down. You'll ask yourself at the end which of his stories is true, and the answer might just be both.
|
![]() | The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.96 This book focuses on good and lesser evils. It is a beautiful story of how people make choices that break themselves and others, and how they can redeem themselves (if only in part). You see love as a virtue of the fallen, as well as cruelty at very young ages. You won't leave this book without some profound sadness but it is worth reading.
