An Artistic Sweet Spot
Rob Mathes is one of those artists so very gifted that his name appears on countless other CD's...so when he sets out to do his own thing, he puts all of his expertise and writing talent to explore the styles he loves. This CD is one of my favorites and sits in or near my CD player at all times. This CD of blues-infected, spiritually infused pop is a terrific collection of beautifully produced songs with incredible musical performances throughout. The highlights are "Evening Train", a wonderful blues-styled tribute to Mathes' grandfather, "I Slept 12 Hours", an infectious pop/blues song about love and loss, "Although It Is The Night", an incredible reworking of Saint John of the Cross' Dark Night of The Soul, but Mathes delivers his finest, most emotional performance in the hidden track, "You Make Me Cry", a cut with luscious strings and gorgeous musical line and lyric. Needless to say, this is a recording that captures a great artist at his musical sweet spot. Highly recommended.
On an aside, if you ever get the privilege of seeing Rob Mathes live (especially with his full accompanying group of band and horn section), you will definitely be a blessed soul.
Undiscovered Mathes
Methes is one of those artists who, when you listen to his work, you wonder, "Why are more people not talking about this guy?" He is definitely an undiscovered McCartney, who writes pop music for people in who are in their forties. Not very commercial, but which meritorious art made after 2001 is?
CHECK THIS GUY OUT........
Rob is one of those guys who's written songs for lots of other artists (including Vanessa Williams) and arranged for even more - he's put out several of his own
CD's. At times his voice reminds me of Sting, but the grooves are more pop, with some jazz and blues thrown in. It's a winner - there are a few songs, including the title cut, that I just listened to over and over......definitely worth checking out.
