Steve Dancy's Favorite Western Books
By an Amazon.com customer
The Virginian (Signet Classics)The Virginian (Signet Classics) by Owen Wister
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $1.19
This book was the inspiration for the Steve Dancy series. The inspiration didn't come from the main character of the novel, but from the life of Owen Wister, the author of this classic. Published in 1902, Wister visited the Old West in the late nineteenth century and wrote from personal experience.
Lonesome DoveLonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
McMurtry was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1986 for Lonesome Dove. His Western books have a sense of realism that few writers have been able to achieve. You can't go wrong with this book-and it's even better than the televisions series.
The ShootistThe Shootist
Buy used from: $9.99
Western Writers of America designated The Shootist as One of the Best Western Novels Ever Written. The book is harder edged than the film, which is excellent as well. (The Shootist was John Wayne's last movie and his best acting performance.)
ShaneShane by Jack Schaefer
Buy used from: $3.89
Schaefer's use of a boy's point-of-view was a masterstroke to make a standard plot feel fresh and refreshing. Schaefer executes this challenging POV flawlessly. For a literary work to last, it must convey an interesting story. Schaefer wrote a literary novel that is also an engaging story.
Roughing It (Enriched Classic Series)Roughing It (Enriched Classic Series) by Mark Twain
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.80
Twain is not normally thrown in with Western authors, but he has a better claim than most – he actually lived it. Starting in the early 1860's, Twain traveled from Missouri to California and spent seven years in Virginia City during the Comstock Lode's rowdiest times. In Roughing It, Twain tells the stories of his Western adventures.
Wyatt Earp: The Life Behind the LegendWyatt Earp: The Life Behind the Legend by Casey Tefertiller
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $5.52
Tefertiller has written a realistic biography of Wyatt Earp. Earp is an interesting man, whose life and adventures continued long after the OK Corral. If you only know what you've seen in the movies, then you're in for a treat when you read this book.
I Married Wyatt Earp: The Recollections of Josephine Sarah Marcus EarpI Married Wyatt Earp: The Recollections of Josephine Sarah Marcus Earp by Josephine Sarah Marcus Earp
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $11.00
This memoir told by Wyatt Earp's commonlaw wife has recieved a lot of criticism for being self-serving and a bit free with the facts. If you already have a good grasp of the real Earp history, then this is a facinating read. Afterall, no one was closer to Wyatt Earp than Josephine.
Doc Holliday: The Life and LegendDoc Holliday: The Life and Legend by Gary L. Roberts
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $10.88
Doc Holliday is hard to get a handle on, especially since he left nothing in his own hand. Roberts has done an exceptional job in writing a comprehensive biography. Robert's attention to detail and accuracy will make this a staple for anyone collecting biographies of Western historical figures.
ChicoChico by Sandra Day O'Connor
Buy new: $12.74 / Used from: $2.96
Yep, a children's book. And a darn good one. If you want your daughter to grow up to be a cowgirl, you can't go wrong with this book. The first woman supreme court justice has not only written an engaging story about her childhood horse, but the illustrations by Dan Andreasen are exceptional.
Guns of the Old West: An Illustrated HistoryGuns of the Old West: An Illustrated History by Dean K. Boorman
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $5.49
Guns of the Old West doesn’t have a lot of narrative about the notorious people of the Wild West, but it is an excellent reference source for late nineteenth century weapons and it has excellent photographs.
Age of the Gunfighter: Men and Weapons on the Frontier 1840-1900Age of the Gunfighter: Men and Weapons on the Frontier 1840-1900 by Joseph G. Rosa
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $9.55
Age of the Gunfighter provides a brief description of prominent figures of the Old West, but Amazon reviewers have found factual errors. I wouldn't rely on this book as an authoritavive source, but it's a useful survey source with great illustrations.
True GritTrue Grit by Charles Portis
Buy used from: $0.26
True Grit is told in the first person by Mattie (the young girl in the movie) after she has become an old woman: A novel, disguised as a memoir. The book is well written and fun. If you've only seen the movie, then grab this book. You'll find more humor than you'd expect.
The Collected Stories of Max BrandThe Collected Stories of Max Brand by Max Brand
Buy used from: $0.30
Max Brand wrote Western short stories for all the popular magazines of his day and it can be argued that these short stories, not the novels of the time, defined the genre.(Not all of Brand's stories in this collection are Westerns, but they're all good.)
Riders of the Purple Sage (Modern Library Classics)Riders of the Purple Sage (Modern Library Classics) by Zane Grey
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $4.94
Riders of the Purple Sage is Zane Grey's best known novel, as it should be. If you’ve never read a Zane Grey, this is the place to start.
All the Pretty HorsesAll the Pretty Horses by Cormac Mccarthy
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01
All the Pretty Horses is a modern Western (1940s) and a great book about interracial love and recapturing the spirit of the West. The book won the National Book Award in 1992, but the 2001 movie was a bomb. If you like to study Hollywood miss-fires, rent it sometime.
Hondo (L Amour, Louis)Hondo (L Amour, Louis) by Louis L'Amour
Buy new: $9.60 / Used from: $0.75
In thirty five years, L'Amour wrote over one hundred books. Every one is still in print. Quite an accomplishment. I've read dozens of his books and Hondo is unquestionably my favorite.
The Quotable John Wayne: The Grit and Wisdom of an American IconThe Quotable John Wayne: The Grit and Wisdom of an American Icon by Carol Lea Mueller
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $14.50
John Wayne was an actor, not a cowboy, but I believe he was a true westerner. This book can be read in an hour, but begs rereading. The quotes are not lines from Wayne's movies; they're his comments in private life. They show Wayne to be quick-witted, a warm human being, and of a consistent character with the roles he played in the movies.
Classic GunfightsClassic Gunfights by Bob Boze Bell
Buy new: $35.04
Classic Gunfights tells the truth about the famous gunfights of the Old West. The book describes twenty-six gunfights and compares actual events to myths and legends. Great illustrations and graphics surround each narrative. Classic Gunfights is a tour de force that substantially adds insight into the history of the period.
Public Cowboy No. 1: The Life and Times of Gene AutryPublic Cowboy No. 1: The Life and Times of Gene Autry by Holly George-Warren
Buy new: $20.44 / Used from: $9.44
This is a well written and highly researched biography, with more than the normal number of photographs. The book is also true to its title, the story is not only about the life of Gene Autry, but also about his time.
The ShopkeeperThe Shopkeeper by James D. Best
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $12.38
Okay, this is a bit of cheating because this is my book. Still, it is my favorite. The Shopkeeper is the story about a New Yorker who sells everything and ventures out to Nevada in 1879. Is a New York City shopkeeper tough enough to survive in the Wild West?
