The Official SAT Study GuideThe Official SAT Study Guide by The College Board
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $4.44
This is the one essential text for all SAT Prep students. The first half of the book is mostly useless (as a tutor friend of mine once said, asking the College Board for SAT advice is like asking the IRS for tax advice!), but its real value lies in the 8 Official Practice Tests contained in the 2nd half. It's the only source of authentic SAT questions that you can buy at retail.
Official SAT Study Guide Solutions Manual: 2007-2008 EditionOfficial SAT Study Guide Solutions Manual: 2007-2008 Edition by Van Tsai
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $30.00
This book is a supplement to the Official Guide to the SAT. It contains answer explanations to each question (although the Official Guide does indicate the answers, it does not explain them). Some of the explanations are excellent; others are just mediocre, but all in all, it's worth the 25 dollars for tough problems that a student can't solve or that a tutor would like help in explaining.
Up Your Score: The Underground Guide to the SAT 2009-2010 Edition (Up Your Score)Up Your Score: The Underground Guide to the SAT 2009-2010 Edition (Up Your Score) by Larry Berger
Buy new: $9.56 / Used from: $5.99
This is a nice, fun book. It covers only a small fraction of what you need to know for the SAT (make sure to take real SATs as well), but it is funny, insightful, and it really connects to students in a language that they can understand. The book is also full of great vocabulary tricks and you can't beat the price at ten dollars.
The Rocket Review Revolution: The Ultimate Guide to the New SAT (2006-2007 Edition) (Rocketreview Revolution: The Ultimate Guide to the New SAT)The Rocket Review Revolution: The Ultimate Guide to the New SAT (2006-2007 Edition) (Rocketreview Revolution: The Ultimate Guide to the New SAT) by Adam Robinson
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $15.95
I find it ironic that one of the original founders of the Princeton Review would go on to write a SAT book that can only be described as "Kaplanesque" in that it contains way more details than necessary! However, there is no denying Robinson's powerful intellect and his ability to break down the test into discrete units. Consider this a "Master Class" for SAT students and tutors.
Word Smart, 4th Edition (Smart Guides)Word Smart, 4th Edition (Smart Guides) by Princeton Review
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $6.00
There is no denying the importance of an extensive vocabulary on the SAT. Word Smart helps you get there by eliminating the words that nobody uses and giving you a solid list of words that are used in popular literary publications. As a former teacher for the Princeton Review, I can say with confidence that Word Smart is by far my favorite PR book.
Hack the SAT: Strategies and Sneaky Shortcuts That Can Raise Your Score Hundreds of PointsHack the SAT: Strategies and Sneaky Shortcuts That Can Raise Your Score Hundreds of Points by Eliot Schrefer
Buy new: $9.75 / Used from: $9.49
This book is written by a fellow Harvard Grad who lives and works as a private tutor in New York. It's in the same vein as "Up Your Score": a lighthearted, humorous take on the SAT. Instead of trying to tackle everything on the test, Schrefer instead focuses on providing quick, useful tips and shortcuts, with a particular emphasis on the math section. All in all, it's worth the ten bucks.
Cracking the SAT, 2009 Edition (College Test Prep)Cracking the SAT, 2009 Edition (College Test Prep) by Princeton Review
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $8.99
As a former Princeton Review SAT instructor, I hesitate to recommend this book because I am fully aware of its shortcomings. However, in terms of simplifying the SAT, it does an excellent job. It's a great "starter book" for students with SAT scores in the 25-75th percentile, or beginning tutors. Quick tip: don't take the practice SATs unless you run out of tests in the Official Guide.
Kaplan 12 Practice Tests for the SAT, 2009 Edition (Kaplan 12 Practice Tests for the Sat)Kaplan 12 Practice Tests for the SAT, 2009 Edition (Kaplan 12 Practice Tests for the Sat) by Kaplan
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $14.89
Personally, I find Kaplan's SAT techniques to be slightly less effective than those of the Princeton Review. They try in vain to cover every facet of every area of the test, and it just ends up sounding too complicated for many students (see "RocketReview Revolution" for similarities). That being said, Kaplan's practice SATs are helpful if you run out of the 8 Official Tests.
