Survey Methodology (Wiley Series in Survey Methodology)Survey Methodology (Wiley Series in Survey Methodology) by Robert M. Groves
Buy new: $63.37 / Used from: $58.25
Written by top academic experts and practitioners, this utilizes the latest research on survey methods. Still, it is accessible to anyone who has taken courses in statistics and social research methods. Instead of taking a cookbook approach, it outlines the choices a researcher must make and details the advantages and disadvantages of alternatives, emphasizing cost/accuracy tradeoffs. Recommended.
Survey Research Methods (Applied Social Research Methods)Survey Research Methods (Applied Social Research Methods)
Buy new: $39.44 / Used from: $32.63
This is a good general book on survey research methods. Fowler writes well, and he covers core topics well. Like most general books on survey research it has a practical orientation. I have used this book in a survey research course in conjunction with his book on writing survey questions. This isn't absolutely necessary; the chapter on survey questions in this book is quite adequate on its own.
Improving Survey Questions: Design and Evaluation (Applied Social Research Methods)Improving Survey Questions: Design and Evaluation (Applied Social Research Methods) by Dr. Floyd J. Fowler
Buy new: $43.29 / Used from: $41.11
A clear and useful book that tackles common problems in survey item design. Fowler argues that researchers spend far too little of their time developing good questions, and I agree.
Survey Questions: Handcrafting the Standardized Questionnaire (Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences)Survey Questions: Handcrafting the Standardized Questionnaire (Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences) by Jean M. Converse
Buy new: $15.08 / Used from: $9.26
A short and nice but dated book about questions and questionnaires.
Survey Research Handbook (Paperback)Survey Research Handbook (Paperback) by Pamela Alreck
Buy new: $85.84 / Used from: $50.00
What I like about this book (and I haven't seen this edition, BTW) is the use of graphics, and particularly the visual display of unusual but possibly useful ways of typesetting questions for self-administered surveys. Like Babbie and unlike Groves et al. and Fowler it includes a how-to section on analysis.
Survey Research Methods, Second EditionSurvey Research Methods, Second Edition by Earl R. Babbie
Buy new: $101.57 / Used from: $14.51
I don't think this book is available any more, but it is a good general intro to survey research that can be used at graduate or undergraduate levels. Someone looking for a how-to book might be better off with Fowler's books or Fink's.
Internet, Mail, and Mixed-Mode Surveys: The Tailored Design MethodInternet, Mail, and Mixed-Mode Surveys: The Tailored Design Method by Don A. Dillman
Buy new: $51.61 / Used from: $48.07
Dillman keeps improving his Tailored Design Method (TDM), which aims to boost the quality and quantity of responses to self-administered (e.g., mail, Internet) surveys. Lots of practical advice and references to current research, but does not much discuss interviewer-administered surveys.
Analysis of Health Surveys (Wiley Series in Survey Methodology)Analysis of Health Surveys (Wiley Series in Survey Methodology) by Edward L. Korn
Buy new: $134.05 / Used from: $68.95
This book is frankly a little bit over my head, but it is still an excellent reference. It is one of the books that regularly comes up in discussions of survey research analysis.
Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods ApproachesResearch Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches by John W. Creswell
Buy new: $47.56 / Used from: $45.09
A good primer on how to choose and how to properly specify a social science research design, with more of an emphasis on the latter than the former. Author is an education researcher. Includes templates for various parts of a research proposal.
Analyzing Social Science Data: 50 Key Problems in Data AnalysisAnalyzing Social Science Data: 50 Key Problems in Data Analysis by Professor David de Vaus
Buy new: $78.95 / Used from: $53.30
A very useful reference for people with beginning to intermediate data analysis skills. Addresses practical data management issues in addition to statistical issues.
Using SPSS for Windows and Macintosh: Analyzing and Understanding Data (5th Edition)Using SPSS for Windows and Macintosh: Analyzing and Understanding Data (5th Edition) by Samuel B. Green
Buy new: $76.13 / Used from: $60.00
Chapters on a variety of functions and procedures in SPSS; can be read in any order. Concise, clear, and very useful. High points include good choices of examples, guided interpretation of SPSS output, and sample write-ups of results. Excellent reference for beginning/intermediate users.
Adventures in Social Research with SPSS Student Version: Data Analysis Using SPSS 14.0 and 15.0 for WindowsAdventures in Social Research with SPSS Student Version: Data Analysis Using SPSS 14.0 and 15.0 for Windows by Earl Robert Babbie
Buy new: $69.61 / Used from: $35.09
This user-friendly text introduces readers to data analysis using SPSS. It asks increasingly complex research questions and shows how to answer them by recoding data, creating composite measures, and using various bivariate and (briefly) multivariate techniques. Inferior to Andy Field's DISCOVERING STATISTICS, but quicker and easier.
Discovering Statistics Using SPSS (Introducing Statistical Methods)Discovering Statistics Using SPSS (Introducing Statistical Methods) by Andy Field
Buy new: $67.45 / Used from: $60.69
Written in a breezy, humorous style, this book is a good introduction to both basic statistics and SPSS. Field is a psychologist and it shows in topic selection. I recommend the book for a refresher course on stats and intro/refresher to SPSS. I probably would not use it for a basic stats intro in the social sciences, however.
Seeing Through Statistics (with CD-ROM and InfoTrac )Seeing Through Statistics (with CD-ROM and InfoTrac ) by Jessica M. Utts
Buy new: $84.64 / Used from: $31.99
A nicely thought out basic statistics text with an emphasis on concepts and statistical literacy (involving, e.g., comparisons between newspaper reporting on health studies vs. the original journal articles) instead of math.
Interaction Effects in Multiple Regression (Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences)Interaction Effects in Multiple Regression (Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences) by Professor James J. Jaccard
Buy new: $16.15 / Used from: $13.99
The Sage series on Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences is full of small, useful, and inexpensive texts. (I still wish they were cheaper.)
Interaction Effects in Logistic Regression (Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences)Interaction Effects in Logistic Regression (Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences) by Professor James J. Jaccard
Buy new: $13.25 / Used from: $14.00
This text is very similar to the preceding text.
