Customer Reviews
Pleased, With Small Gripes.
I searched and compared projectors for a long time before settling on this one. I need a highly portable, easily set-up, projector for slideshows, movies, presentations, and the occasional killer gaming session. I'm not using it for home theatre or anything high-tech. So far I'm very satisfied. It's easy to set up with basic electronic A/V knowledge. It's less confusing than other projectors I've worked with, and the A/V mute and instant on/off are particularly handy. The remote does just about everything too. My big problem is that it has USB connectivity to a computer, Plug-n-play!!, but only for PCs! As a Mac user I was frustrated that it did not say ANYTHING about this in the specs until I opened the box. Especially frustrating is that earlier models seemed to have good connectivity with Macs, so I don't know what happened. However, no biggie because it still connects with the component cable, and even to my iPod with the help of the iPod A/V cable. All-in-all a good purchase, especially for the price.
High Quality for Price
I got this projector for use on projector cart for the K-8 school where I work. The ability of the device to turn on quickly, to identify the correct video source, automatically, and to shut down quickly is really valuable in an environment where harried teachers may not always be patient enough to follow instructions. Easy setup, easy switching among devices, a bright image even in a partially lit classroom makes for a great choice. We have two other Epson projectors (Epson PowerLite 77c 2200 Lumen Multimedia Projector) which are nearly identical to the EX30 except for the larger number of interface options including HDMI.
The short throw of the projector does mean that the cart needs to be pretty close to the projection surface. This can be inconvenient on a cart because the projector needs to be in front of the students, but we have small class sizes, so this is not a major problem. As a ceiling mount, this is an ideal solution (our ultimate goal is to have projectors ceiling-mounted in each classroom).
Disappointed
We thought this projector seemed a good value and had really great customer reviews so we felt confident about getting it. I don't think we took enough consideration in looking at the resolution. We were very disappointed when we tried it out. The resolution wasn't that great and the image wasn't as detailed as we wanted it. It was also hard to see in a lighted room. But the biggest problem was fuzzy spots that appeared on the projected image. We called Epson and the customer service rep after walking us through some tests and asking some questions determined that the lens was probably scratched or had dust inside it. The lens did look like it was scratched. Because we were disappointed in other things besides the scratches we returned this project and got another one with a higher resolution and more lumens for a higher price. The second projector was SO much clearer - much more detailed and brightness. In this case, I'd say that spending extra money was worth it.
