Sudden Death
I picked up the KP-410 at Costco to sharpen a couple dozen pencils a week for our bridge club. It worked fine for about a year, but tonight it died in the middle. Kind of chewed up the pencil, and stopped. Permanently. Deducing it was not the sensor, I opened it up, and found a blown glass fuse, a smaller version of what you would find in a car. Soldered in.
Panasonic's site has no reference to this model, with or without a dash. The only new pencil sharpener on offer has a stapler built in.
When it was working, the KP-410 was not that good, just better than several other models I tried - all that Staples offered, I think. The KP-410 sharpened quickly and reliably, but the points were off-round. I had an I-point from Costco that I liked better, but it had a power adapter that required a specific position. Since I needed to use the thing with an extension cord, I could not guarantee that.
So, I'm starting the search for a new model. (My Mom gave me my previous Panasonic for Christmas in 1966. It was still running, but tired, 40 years later.)
It didn't last very long
I got this sharpener last year for my 2nd grade daughter. It stopped working recently. It the motor still spins, but blade stops spinning as soon as it touches the pencil.
An autopsy revealed that there is a small rectangular plastic shaft that fits into a rectangular socket in the motor gear box. Under load the gear box flexes away so that only the tip of this drive shaft remains engaged.
The corners of the drive shaft get rounded off and that is that.

The best reliable cheap sharpener ever !!
I bought this sharpener last month after several trials with unknown brands with almost same price. It is fast, SHARP and with the auto-stop option makes your life easier especially when kids are using it because it saves you the life of pencils...
I advise anyone to buy it without a single doubt.
