![]() | Ultimate Survival Technologies Deluxe Survival Kit with Hard Case
Buy new: $60.43 Everything you need to build a shelter, make fire, and signal for help - in a tiny box. All military grade. If I could only bring two items to the proverbial desert island, it would be this box and my knife.
![]() | Gerber 22-49470 Gator Combo Axe
Buy new: $33.35 / Used from: $29.99 Decent quality, knife in the handle. Make sure to remove the knife before you start chopping or it will fly out! Buy a Gransfors Bruks if you want a great axe, but this fits in a pack and works great for kindling etc.
![]() | GERBER Folding Spade w/ Sheath - Model 5940
It's a shovel. But it's tiny, solid, and works.
![]() | Garmin GPS 60CSx Handheld GPS Navigator
Buy new: $276.00 / Used from: $275.00 Well reviewed, rugged, submersible. Works in the car, on the water, on the trail, on the bike. I've used it in all these situations and it worked in each. The altimeter is on crack but no complaints otherwise. My favorite feature is the ability to tell the unit whether to follow roads or not. The logging capability is cool, most of my favorite mountain bike trails are now mapped out in detail!

![]() | GARMIN 010-10578-00 Carrying Case
Buy new: Too low to display Protects the Garmin well, screen remains readable and buttons can still be pressed easily. A must to avoid scratching the screen.
![]() | Jetboil Flash Java Kit
Buy new: $107.00 Available in different configurations. You could buy the PCS and add on the coffee press like I did or buy this package deal. The Jetboil is a fantastic little stove and boils a quart of water in two minutes. The coffee press add-on is essential because the last vestige of civilization I will EVER give up is real coffee in the morning.
![]() | Jetboil Fluxring Fry Pan
Buy new: $38.99 - $49.95 Pan for the Jetboil system. I personally prefer non-stick to alu, but it's well made and has the fluxring bottom which helps it heat up quickly. Requires a pan stabilizer accessory for the PCS.
![]() | MSR Superfly Stove
Buy new: $49.95 / Used from: $42.99 Works as advertised. Tiny and light, packs into a minuscule container. At some point I will replace this with an MSR stove that runs on gasoline.
![]() | Pinnacle Pass 2Xta
Buy new: $169.90 A great entry-level backpacking tent. I use an REI Quarter Dome T3, but I purchased this tent for a companion. It hasn't been used yet, I will update this post once I've tried it out. From other reviews online it seems like the fly needs to be seam sealed. You can't beat the price though for a 4.11 lbs tent.
![]() | Eagles Nest Outfitters DoubleNest Hammock
Buy new: $48.22 - $67.95 Great hammock. Packs down to the size of a grapefruit but will hold a couple up to 400 lbs.
![]() | Surefire L4 Lumamax L4-HA-WH
Buy used from: $135.00 Not a general-purpose camp flashlight due to battery cost and life, but if you want something that fits in the outside pocket of a Ka-Bar Eagle sheath and is bright enough to blind any foe, this is your light.
![]() | Coleman 3AAA LED Headlamp
Buy new: $24.99 Not as well made as a Petzl, but cheap, comfortable, very bright (55 Lumens), and includes a red light setting that is powerful enough to find your way around a dark campsite without affecting night vision.
![]() | Coleman Two-Mantle Dual Fuel Powerhouse Lantern
Buy new: $66.99 / Used from: $60.00 This is a huge lamp, there is a smaller model available with a hard case. I ordered the matching case for this model separately from Coleman.com for about 15 bucks. Gives off an amazing amount of light. Definitely not suitable for backpacking, but perfect for car camping or evenings out on the deck with a glass of wine. Runs on regular unleaded fuel.
![]() | Black Diamond Apollo Lantern, Dark Gray
Buy new: $45.95 Lightweight, water resistant, and collapsible, this lamp hangs from the ceiling of my tent by a mini-carabiner. It goes forever on a set of batteries (I've replaced them twice in almost a year of use) and gives off a good amount of light.
![]() | Silva Ranger 515 CL Compass
Buy new: $45.85 / Used from: $42.00 Simple, effective, high quality, full-featured.
![]() | Leatherman 830039 New Wave Multitool with Leather Sheath
Buy new: Too low to display Does everything. Extremely well made and inexpensive.
![]() | Camping Stainless Steel Eating Utensil - Come-Apart Design
Cheap and functional. It's nice that the two halves come apart unlike the Ka-bar hobo tool below.
![]() | Ka-Bar Knife Hobo Stainless Steel Md: 1301
Buy new: $19.49 Sturdy and functional. Heavier than a titanium spork, but a little more civilized. The only issue I have is due to my upbringing in Europe - I like to eat with a knife and fork (without swapping) and this little guy doesn't come apart. I usually use it with my big knife for eating. Not the best design with all the utensils attached to each other, but very well made.
![]() | SAS Survival Guide Handbook (Collins Gem) by John 'lofty' Wiseman
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.29 EVERYONE should own a copy of this book. Everything from how to build a shelter, to bleed an animal and make sausage out of the blood, to where to dig your latrine.
![]() | Katadyn Carbon Cartridge
Buy new: $11.95 Fits the output hose of the Katadyn Pocket (and many others) and removes minerals and chemicals.
![]() | Fold-A-Carrier - 2.5 Gal Folding Water Jug
Contrary to the one negative review I've been using the same bag for over a year (6-7 trips) with no leaks, and it's still in perfect condition. No complaints. Dry it with a hair dryer when you get home and throw the valve in the dishwasher.
![]() | Travel Kit by Nalgene
Buy new: $7.35 - $12.58 Great little assortment of bottles. Use them for anything, from olive oil to shampoo to medications.
![]() | Foray Jacket - Men's by Outdoor Research
Buy new: $178.99 - $199.00 Fantastic rain shell. Breathable, lightweight yet indestructible, fully taped, weighs in at under a pound.
![]() | Columbia Omni-Dry Silver Ridge Convertible Pant Mens
Buy new: $54.95 - $64.95 These pants are great. They pack down into a tiny roll, dry very quickly, and have thus far resisted all my attempts to destroy them.
![]() | Merrell Chameleon Hex Hiking Shoe - Men's
Buy new: $74.99 - $100.00 Absolutely fantastic lightweight hiking shoe for the nicer seasons. Vibram soles provide stellar grip, and the shoes are lighter than most sneakers. Very breathable. Tightening system allows shoes to fit snugly to avoid toe damage when hiking downhill.
![]() | Cold Steel 43LS Urban Pal Knife
Buy new: $15.27 / Used from: $12.99 A great little weapon of last resort for the urban jungle. The holes in the sheath align perfectly with the eyelets on a pair of combat or tactical boots (see the Magnum boots also in this list) for concealment & accessibility.
![]() | Nite-Ize - Figure 9, Big, Single
Buy new: $8.27 These little guys are really cool. Can be used for stringing up tarps, clotheslines etc. without having to tie a hitch knot.
![]() | 550lb. Type III Paracord
Buy new: $2.25 - $10.59 Have to have at least 50 feet of this in any survival kit.
![]() | Ultimate Survival Technologies Sparkie Mini Fire Starter
Buy new: $11.95 - $18.35 A great little fire starter, can be used one-handed. A definite improvement over the BlastMatch, although the "flint" here is much smaller so it will be used up sooner.
![]() | Swedish Firesteel- Army Model
Buy new: $11.72 - $20.52 What can I say, it works. In case I run our of Bics, although it's been replaced by the UST survival kit and my new Sparkie.
