Enhancing Trader Performance: Proven Strategies From the Cutting Edge of Trading Psychology (Wiley Trading)Enhancing Trader Performance: Proven Strategies From the Cutting Edge of Trading Psychology (Wiley Trading) by Brett N. Steenbarger
Buy new: $37.80 / Used from: $30.00
If there's only one book on trading, this will have to be it. It really tells you how to go about designing your own individual approach to markets. The emphasis in the book is very much for day-traders, but the psychology, reasoning and recommended steps are all worth gold.
Technical Analysis: The Complete Resource for Financial Market TechniciansTechnical Analysis: The Complete Resource for Financial Market Technicians by Charles D. Kirkpatrick
Buy new: $60.66 / Used from: $68.99
In my opinion, it is superior to Murphy's guidebook (which I found to be very brief and vague). the writing is very academic, but the writers reference a lot of work by other authors. The sections on point-and-figure chart patterns is itself worth the price of the entire book.
Reminiscences of a Stock Operator (Wiley Investment Classics)Reminiscences of a Stock Operator (Wiley Investment Classics) by Edwin Lefèvre
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $7.97
THE classic book, supposedly based on Jesse Livermore. A must read. The language is a bit antiquated, but there is almost everything in there that is relevant.
Market Wizards: Interviews with Top TradersMarket Wizards: Interviews with Top Traders by Jack D. Schwager
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $6.97
I thought that the interviews with Ed Seykota and Paul Tudor Jones were especially enlightening. The interview with Dr. Van Thorp on trading psychology was also helpful. For options traders, the interview with Anthony Saliba (whose options books I'm reading) might be of interest.
The New Market Wizards: Conversations with America's Top TradersThe New Market Wizards: Conversations with America's Top Traders by Jack D. Schwager
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $11.70
The interview with William Eckhardt (who partnered with Richard Dennis for the Turtles experiment) was very enlightening, in the way he thinks, which seems very scientific and empirical. I really liked reading Stanley Druckenmiller's interview too
How to Trade In StocksHow to Trade In Stocks by Jesse Livermore
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $7.97
Original text written by Jesse Livermore himself. I focused mostly on the original text by Livermore: I didn't really read the other parts of the book, which were written by a guy who doesn't seem to have a trading record to speak of.
Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the MarketsFooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Buy new: $18.48 / Used from: $17.85
A literary read: the author is an options trader, and he mixes composite characters in the book with a pseudo-fictional character who "miraculously" has the same initials as the author himself. I think this book has a very valid thesis (i.e. that it is hard to distinguish between luck and talent in the markets).
The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly ImprobableThe Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Buy new: $18.48 / Used from: $12.97
Lots of people really hate this, but I love this book. The style is hard to read (Taleb said he intentionally made it impossible to speed-read), and not a little pedantic. But he gives a very good framework that I find useful for a trader. The other useful thing about the book is that he elucidates the human biases that pervade our thinking.
HedgehoggingHedgehogging by Barton Biggs
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $5.90
Fascinating book on hedgefunds. He is very much worth reading, with a lot of very good ideas. He is quite disparaging of technical analysis (particularly of Elliot wave theorists), but his scepticism is understandable.
Inside the House of Money: Top Hedge Fund Traders on Profiting in the Global MarketsInside the House of Money: Top Hedge Fund Traders on Profiting in the Global Markets by Steven Drobny
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $6.99
Brillant series of interviews. The one to look out for is with Jim Leitner (Falcon Management), who seems to have a really global macro view of the world.
Mind over Markets: Power Trading With Market Generated InformationMind over Markets: Power Trading With Market Generated Information by James F. Dalton
Buy new: $29.95 / Used from: $25.00
THE book on Market Profile. But the writing style is super longwinded. Don't read at night, or you'll never get past the first ten pages.
