"I see your future clearly. Your master will be dead, and you will be alone. It would be better if you had never been born."
Thomas Ward is the apprentice for the local Spook, who banishes boggarts and drives away ghosts. But now a new danger is threatening Tom's world: the witches are rising and the three most powerful clans are uniting in order to conjure an unimaginable evil.
Tom and the Spook set out to stop the witches before they unleash the demon. But when Tom finds himself on his own, he wonders if he has the courage and cunning to defeat the most powerful enemy he has ever encountered.

From J. Kaye's Book Blog
The three witch clans are uniting to summon a great evil, and Tom has to stop them. Although the whole book was rock-on good, the ending was the best part of the book. I don't wish to give any details or it will spoil the book.
If I had to list a least favorite part of the book for me was probably the beginning. I never like beginnings; it's always hard for me to get into a new book.
As in previous books, Alice is my most favorite character. She knows when to break the rules, and she uses dark magic for good.
At the risk of ruffling some feathers, this is the best series I have ever read - better than Harry Potter.
Fiendishly Good!
This is the best book by far in the series. Tom Ward is coming into his own as the Spook's apprentice which is good because old Gregory seems to be fading. (In fact, Delaney hints that Tom will be heading off to do an internship with another Spook in the next book).
The mythology in these books is first rate although I think practicing witches might be disturbed with being stereotyped as haggard looking crones. In "Attack of the Fiend" three covens band together to raise the devil himself. Tom avoids being killed but now the fiend walks free. No doubt to cause more mischief in future Tales of the Last Apprentice.
And I'm looking forward to reading all of them.
Awesome spine-tingling series
Wow! This series just gets better and better! I don't even like horror, but these books strike the right tone. Delightfully creepy (boys will love it), but not too intense for children ages 10 and up. I loooove the narrative voice. The main character's simple, matter-of-fact voice balances perfectly with the story's melodramatic horror. The main character is very endearing. You'll be cheering for him. The plot has evolved nicely from book to book. Read Book One first, and you'll eagerly turn pages to get to this one. I love the characters, love the story, love the writing style. Love it all! Can't wait for more!
