He includes great descriptions of scenery and people, and weaves history and insight seamlessly into his narrative. A great read. It doesn't cover all of Australia, but covers enough to give you good insight into the land Down under.

Buy new: $19.79 / Used from: $12.33 Lonely Planet is great, especially for traveling on a budget. Lots of reliable information. Geared for a slightly younger crowd, and generally excelling at remote locations. It doesn't hurt that Australia is home turf for LP. If you're only visiting a few places, Lonely Planet also does individual guides for Australia's major cities.

Check for this at secondhand book stores. It was published in the US by Rand McNally. Keneally is a terrific writer and does a lovely job summing up what the Australian outback is like.
