Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $5.44 The first half of Peter Bagge's Buddy Bradley saga. The follow-up to this book, Buddy Does Jersey, has recently been released and is every bit as good. Also, check out Bagge's earlier work in The Bradleys.

![]() | One Hundred Demons by Lynda Barry
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $6.90 Short stories about Lynda Barry's childhood. Reading this comic will actually remind you of what it's like to be a kid.
![]() | I Never Liked You by Chester Brown
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $1.50 Excellent autobiographical work from Chester Brown. This book is so personal, realistic, and vivid that when I remember moments from it I feel like I'm remembering moments from my own life. Also, check out Brown's The Playboy and The Little Man.
![]() | Misery Loves Comedy by Ivan Brunetti
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $14.40 This collects the first three issues of Ivan Brunetti's comic book Schizo as well as some other work of his. The comics here are mostly autobiographical and feature Brunetti's pitch black humor, his impressive variety of drawing styles, self-loathing, and lots of gags involving sex and violence (but they're all really funny. Seriously).
![]() | An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories (Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, & True Stories, Volume 1)
Buy new: $15.66 / Used from: $9.30 Ivan Brunetti edited this anthology and it's a great starting point for people new to comics. Some of the greatest comics from some of the greatest cartoonists are collected in here.
![]() | Black Hole by Charles Burns
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $6.79 After ten years in the making, Charles Burns' masterpiece about alienated (and mutated) youth is now available in one volume. This is a great, unique coming of age story accompanied by what is, in my opinion, some of the finest comic art ever produced. This is definitely the best thing he's done so far, but all of his work is worth checking out.
![]() | Caricature by Daniel Clowes
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $4.53 Daniel Clowes is definitely my favorite cartoonist and this collection of his short stories is my favorite book of his. Other books by him I'd highly recommend are Ghost World and Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron, but you really can't go wrong with any of his books.
![]() | The R. Crumb Coffee Table Art Book (Kitchen Sink Press Book for Back Bay Books) by R. Crumb
Buy new: $29.28 / Used from: $25.76 Crumb is one of the very best cartoonists of all time. The Coffee Table Book is a great starting point for newcomers to Crumb's work because it offers a nice overview of all of his work.
![]() | Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea by Guy Delisle
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $8.00 Pretty much like taking a trip through North Korea. Pretty funny too. If you like this, check out Delisle's other book, Shenzhen.
![]() | The Perry Bible Fellowship: The Trial of Colonel Sweeto and Other Stories by Nicholas Gurewitch
Buy used from: $57.77 Nicholas Gurewitch is a genius. Definitely one of the best cartoonists out there right now.
![]() | Kramer's Ergot 5
Buy used from: $17.48 Features work from many of the more experimental cartoonists from around the world. Also has some more conventional work from people like Chris Ware, Jordan Crane, and David Heatley (Heatley's autobio story in here, "My Sexual History", is one of my favorite comic stories of all time).
![]() | Kramers Ergot 6 (Kramer's Ergot)
Buy new: $27.48 / Used from: $19.99 Just as great as the last one, and definitely more experimental. Mixes a lot of new groundbreaking comics with some amazing obscure older stuff. To me, the highlight is the new comic by Victor Cayro (aka Bald Eagles).
![]() | Locas: The Maggie and Hopey Stories (Love & Rockets) by Jaime Hernandez
Buy new: $32.97 / Used from: $24.99 The Hernandez Brothers created their series Love and Rockets in the early 80s and helped start the alternative comics revolution. This book collects the majority of Jaime Hernandez's work from Love and Rockets in a big, meaty hardcover edition. Excellent storytelling and beautiful art.
![]() | Palomar: The Heartbreak Soup Stories (Love and Rockets) by Gilbert Hernandez
Buy used from: $48.29 Gilbert Hernandez is one of the best storytellers in the field of comics. This book collects his Palomar stories from Love and Rockets. If you like this, check out Love and Rockets X and Poison River (and his current work, of course!)
![]() | Heartbreak Soup (Love & Rockets) by Gilbert Hernandez
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $3.68 This is the first in a series of smaller, more affordable books that collect Gilbert's comics from Love and Rockets.
![]() | Maggie the Mechanic (Love & Rockets)
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.44 Just like the Heartbreak Soup book above, this is a nice, more affordable book to newcomers of Love and Rockets.
![]() | American Elf Volume 1: The Collected Sketchbook Diaries Of James Kochalka (v. 1) by James Kochalka
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $9.15 Five years of Kochalka's autobiographical comic strip. Great stuff.
![]() | Snake 'n' Bacon's Cartoon Cabaret by Michael Kupperman
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $4.99 Michael Kupperman is one of the funniest people alive. This book is filled with short comics that feature his trademark absurdist sense of humor. If you like this, check out his new series Tales Designed to Thrizzle.
![]() | The Mad Archives, Vol. 1 (Issues 1-6) (DC Archive Editions.) by The Usual Gang of Idiots
Buy new: $31.49 / Used from: $26.38 This is where it all began. Harvey Kurtzman created Mad, which started out as a full color comic book, and had the cartooning dream team of Jack Davis, Will Elder, and Wally Wood to illustrate his stories. This collects the first six issues and they are still genuinely funny today.
![]() | Batman: Year One by Frank Miller
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $7.58 It's hard for me to decide between this and Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. They're both great. This book has incredible artwork by David Mazzucchelli and isn't quite as over the top as some of Miller's other work, which is nice. Jeph Loeb wrote Long Halloween and Dark Victory which are kind of like follow-ups to this book. Don't read them though. They suck.
![]() | Der Struwwelmaakies by Tony Millionaire
Buy used from: $5.00 Maakies is one of the very few great comic strips these days. Very funny and features beautiful artwork similar to that of a Victorian era illustrator.
![]() | Watchmen by Alan Moore
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $5.00 There's a reason this book is on every list of best comics. If you haven't already, be sure to read this before it's ruined by the film adaptation that's coming out. Moore is possibly the best writer in all of comics. So if you like this, check out some of his other books. You can't really go wrong with any of his stuff.
![]() | All Star Superman, Vol. 1 by Grant Morrison
Buy used from: $24.00 Man, I'm usually disappointed by superhero comics when I read them, but this is one of the best I've seen in quite a while. Incredible artwork by Frank Quitely and Morrison's writing is slightly less "out there" than usual, which I like. Also, it's just a straight up good superhero comic and not some lame edgy revisionist crap (e.g. everything by Mark Millar).
![]() | Achewood: The Great Outdoor Fight by Chris Onstad
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.19 I don't have this one, but I read these strips online when they first came out. Hilarious stuff. Chris Onstad is by far one of the very best cartoonists to emerge in the 2000s.
![]() | Akira, Vol. 1 by Katsuhiro Otomo
Buy used from: $13.95 The first volume of Katsuhiro Otomo's epic Akira comic. Way better and quite a bit different than the movie, which is a classic itself. This is definitely one of my all-time favorite comics.
![]() | American Splendor: The Life and Times of Harvey Pekar by Harvey Pekar
Buy new: $13.60 / Used from: $5.88 Really great autobiographical comics that give you a real honest look at life.
![]() | What're You Lookin' At?: Volume II of the Collected Angry Youth Comix by Johnny Ryan
Buy new: $16.95 / Used from: $7.99 Insanely funny, but not for the easily offended (or even the somewhat-hard-to-offend). If you're into Simpsons, South Park, or Family Guy then you'll probably like this too. Also, check out Ryan's equally funny work in Portajohnny or get your hands on a copy of Comic Book Holocaust, which is filled with Ryan's hilarious, over-the-top comic book/strip parodies.
![]() | The Complete Peanuts 1950-1952 by Charles M. Schulz
Buy new: $19.11 / Used from: $6.74 Charles Schulz is probably the greatest cartoonist of all time.
![]() | Wimbledon Green by Seth
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $4.50 This isn't considered to be Seth's greatest comic (that title would probably belong to "It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken"), but I liked this more than anything else by him. The book is set in a world where rare comics are valuable artifacts and they are hunted down by eccentric millionaires with rocket cars and gyrocopters.
![]() | The Freak Brothers Omnibus by Gilbert Shelton
Buy new: $27.32 / Used from: $38.02 They finally released all the Freak Brothers comics in one big affordable package. A newer generation might look at this and think it's some lame hippie/stoner comic, but it's actually one of the funniest and most clever comics ever made. One of the best comic releases I've seen in a while.
![]() | Maus : A Survivor's Tale : My Father Bleeds History/Here My Troubles Began/Boxed by Art Spiegelman
Buy new: $19.73 / Used from: $13.46 A must read for anyone interested in comics as art. I can't say anything about it that hasn't already been said.
![]() | Abandon the Old in Tokyo by Yoshihiro Tatsumi
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $8.69 Short stories that are mostly about loners and outsiders. Excellent production values for a translated Japanese comic. This is better than the first volume in this series (The Push Man), but that book's also worth reading.
![]() | Summer Blonde by Adrian Tomine
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $3.97 Adrian Tomine has an amazing ability to capture real life better than most artists working in any medium. Also, he is one of the best comic artists working today. This book collects four excellent short stories from Tomine's comic series Optic Nerve. If you like this, check out his earlier work in Sleepwalk or his newer book Shortcomings.
![]() | Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth by Chris Ware
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $7.00 Some people really love this one. I think it's definitely worth reading, but it left me feeling a little cold. I think Ware is a great cartoonist, but I think his earlier work is a little overrated. I think the Rusty Brown story in Acme Novelty Library 16, 17, and 19 are better than Jimmy Corrigan. I also think his work in ANL 18 is his best work yet.
![]() | McSweeney's Issue 13 (Mcsweeney's Quarterly Concern)
Buy new: $16.32 / Used from: $5.00 This Chris Ware-edited volume of McSweeney's is a great starting point for somebody new to comics. Features work from some of the industry's biggest talents and essays about comics history and cartoonists.
![]() | The Frank Book by Jim Woodring
Buy used from: $70.00 An excellent comic and a beautifully designed book. This is one of the few comics you can show to just about anyone and they will just look at it and go "Wow".
