Born to Explore is filled with skills, projects, and essential knowledge for the budding adventurer
Explorer extraordinaire Richard Wiese's more than one hundred excellent projects show how to have fun with science and nature, how to not always take the most walked path, and how to learn to "read" the natural world. Discovery does not occur just in the Amazon or deep in the ocean. It happens everywhere around us:
Navigate by the stars,
Tell time without a watch,
Start a fire without a match,
Make an igloo,
Build your own canoe,
And be prepared for any challenge.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Born to Explore is a guidebook for parents as well as their children and a reminder that the joy of being outdoors had not been completely lost to the computer age. (Scott Carpenter, Mercury Astronaut )
Born to Explore is not only about adventure and how to survive while exploring the wonders of the great outdoors but also about how to find nature everywhere at anytime. This book will immediately get your imagination soaring and have you thinking like an explorer. (Jim Whittaker, First American to Summit Mount Everest )
Richard is known as a great story teller and his book Born to Explore has the feel of a great tale being told around a fire. He has challenged us to see the world through new eyes while having fun. (Jim Fowler of Mutual of Omaha's Wild kingdomJim Fowler of Mutual of Omaha's Wild kingdomJim Fowler of "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom" )
"One part adventure manual, one part travel inspiration, this book is full of delightful surprises." (Jon Dorn, editor in chief Backpacker )
About the Author
In 2002, Richard Wiese became the youngest president in The Explorers Club's one hundred-year history. He has tagged jaguars in the YucatÁn jungles, captured crocodiles, and handled venomous snakes in Australia; achieved the first ascent of an unclimbed mountain in Alaska; discovered twenty-nine new life forms on Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa; and cross-country skied to the North Pole.

A MUST HAVE BOOK FOR THE SUMMER
After reading this book with my 15 year old son, there are so many projects we would like to try in our own backyard this summer. This book is like having your own personal Summer Camp Instructor. Richard Wiese has created a Must Have masterpiece. Easy to follow instructions and wonderful graphics!
Simply an amazing and inspirational book!
I would like to make two comments about "Born to Explore". #1 - "Born to Explore" embodies this principle: Live as if were to die tomorrow and learn as if you were to live forever. #2 - The wisest people have taught me that two of the greatest gifts we can give our children are roots and wings. "Born to Explore" teaches both. This book is a must read!
The guide for MacGyvers everywhere
"This is the book for parents who want to instill a love of the outdoors to their kids. Fishing with a Coke bottle? Building a fox hole radio? That strikes me as a lot more resourceful - and fun - than simply ordering the latest gadget online. Born to Explore awakens the MacGyver in us all."
