Playtex Diaper Genie System 2Playtex Diaper Genie System 2
Buy new: $29.12
Diaper disposal unit, a must have. Do the research and get the one that you think is best and easiest for you to use and to find refills for. I would personally recommend the Diaper Genie II over the Original Diaper Genie, as the original did not eliminate as much of the odors as I would have liked as our son started eating solid foods.
Boppy Bare Naked Expandable Miracle Middle PillowBoppy Bare Naked Expandable Miracle Middle Pillow
Buy new: $29.57
Gotta have a nursing pillow! Whether you're nursing or not, these are great for bottle feeding and just holding to baby. If you ARE nursing these are especially great because you can prop the baby with the pillow and use your arms to eat a meal and read books and other fun things.
The First Year's Infant To Toddler Tub with Sling BlueThe First Year's Infant To Toddler Tub with Sling Blue
Buy new: $21.99
This is a perfect infant tub for the "larger" babies like my son who were born at almost 10 lbs. We used the net for maybe a month, then he was just too big for it, but the tub still worked great without it. This tub is very large compared to other baby tubs, so we were able to use it up until our son was strong enough to sit up in a real bathtub.
Prince Lionheart Ultimate Wipes WarmerPrince Lionheart Ultimate Wipes Warmer
Buy new: $19.11
This is a GREAT item to have for new babies! Huggies Supreme wipes work best with this, and you can get them in big refill packages. It uses a special "stay-moist" pad insert to keep the wipes moist, and you can disconnect the cord @ the back of the unit, without have to unplug from the wall, which is a nice feature.
Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Newborn Feeding SetDr. Brown's Natural Flow Newborn Feeding Set
Buy new: $17.78
Great for bottle feeding new babies. Let's them control the flow by sucking (more like breast feeding) rather than the liquid just running into their mouth, which can cause gagging and lazy feeding/messes. Also work well for transitioning older babies from the breast to the bottle.
Philips Avent Express Microwave SterilizerPhilips Avent Express Microwave Sterilizer
Buy new: $26.50
I loved having this, even though people have said that you don't need to sterilize baby bottles. However, the water quality at our house (well-water out in the country) always worried me (we don't drink it) so I bought this to sterilize the bottles with distilled water after washing. It's definitely an option for people who are worried about water quality in their home.
Crane Adorable 1 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier, Penguin ShapeCrane Adorable 1 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier, Penguin Shape
Buy new: $39.99
A cool mist humidifier can be a sleep-saver when a little one has a cold or cough. You can get a $30-$40 cool mist humidifier at an department store. Or you could get this cute penguin-looking one. I actually don't recommend the "character" designed humidifiers for older babies/toddlers who may think it's a toy. But for pre-crawling babies it may be a functional addition to the decor of a room.
American Red Cross: Rapid Read Underarm ThermometerAmerican Red Cross: Rapid Read Underarm Thermometer
Buy new: $12.99
Underarm thermometers are much better for newborns and small infants than ear thermometers. Usually the ear thermometers are just too big for tiny ears. Underarm thermometers are less traumatic than the ear thermometer and the horrific anal thermometer.
Kiddopotamus Snuzzler Complete Head and Body Support, Ivory TerryKiddopotamus Snuzzler Complete Head and Body Support, Ivory Terry
Buy new: $17.71
Gotta have the head support for the car seats, even more-so when your baby is very tiny and the car seat seems more like a bucket than a safety device. Again, be aware that these can be very warm and insulate your baby's body heat, so dress/cover them accordingly to avoid overheating especially around their head.
Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe Microfleece Small, IvoryKiddopotamus SwaddleMe Microfleece Small, Ivory
Buy new: $9.99
These are great for keeping your baby cozy with swaddling and MUCH easier to use than traditional blankets. These are also available in cotton, and come in different sizes and colors and patterns, and they even make a special car seat version that also works well with baby swings and other seats. You can check out all kinds of Kiddopotamus products, they have some really great stuff.
Baby Light and Clip--Nail Clipper for BabiesBaby Light and Clip--Nail Clipper for Babies
Buy new: $8.50
Nail clippers become increasingly important as baby's nail begin to grow and become less flimsy. The most important aspect of baby nail clippers is the grip. Being able to hold firmly to the clippers while "clipping" gently is vital. The clipper we use do not have a "light" on them, but I can see how it would come in handy when trimming tiny finger nails.
No-Scratch Mittens - Pink TrimNo-Scratch Mittens - Pink Trim
Keep little faces safe by covering up fingernails when they're still too short to clip again, but long enough to cause trouble. NOTE: Mittens are not recommended for babies to wear while sleeping. Should only be worn while awake and with adults.
Gerber Nasal AspiratorGerber Nasal Aspirator
Nasal aspirators are an extremely important tool for all parents. They usually send you home with a hospital-grade bulb, which works GREAT, but it gets gross fast. Shopping around for the right one for your baby's nose can be a frustrating task. I found that this Gerber brand nasal aspirator worked the best for my son.
The Original Doctor Mom Otoscope, otoscopesThe Original Doctor Mom Otoscope, otoscopes
Buy new: $23.97
Yes, you can buy these for use in your home! My son would get ear infections but show no symptoms (no ear tugging or ear sensitivity, even when using ear thermometer). The doctor told me that you could buy simple, home otoscopes for a reasonable price, and even let me look in his otoscope to see what an ear infection looks like.
The New Father: A Dad's Guide to the First YearThe New Father: A Dad's Guide to the First Year by Armin A. Brott
Buy new: $11.01 / Used from: $0.01
My husband read this book to get ready for the baby, mainly because he had little-to-no experience with infants. Over the first year-or-so there were a few instances where he admitted that he wouldn't really have known what to do if he hadn't read this book. So, I recommend this book for all new father's who are feeling uneasy about handling and caring for a newborn.
Disney's Lullaby AlbumDisney's Lullaby Album by Fred Mollin
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.60
This is THE MOST wonderful lullaby album I've come across. It helped to relax and soothe my son at bedtime and if he was sick. He's 2-1/2 now and still listens to it at bedtime. I recommend this as #1 baby CD purchase over any others (even the "womb" sounds and classical/symphonic lullaby CDs). Works great in a vehicle and in the home. There is also a Disney Lullaby Album Volume 2.
COBY CX-CD241 Portable CD Player with AM/FM RadioCOBY CX-CD241 Portable CD Player with AM/FM Radio
Buy new: $29.24 / Used from: $19.99
A small boombox-style CD player is great to have as your baby starts to sleep in a crib in their own room. It doesn't have to be high-quality sound, as you will be playing it at low volume. You can also get the "clock-radio" type, but will need to cover the LCD display when the baby is sleeping so the light doesn't keep them awake. You can get these for $20 or less at many department stores.
