Maindrian Pace (H.B. Halicki) is a master car thief who heads an elaborate organization of professionals. Using an insurance investigation company as a front Pace and his associates buy junked cars from accident scenes steal new autos of the same model and color then switch the serial numbers for resale. It's a lucrative business but when some shady characters offer them 400000 dollars to deliver 50 specific luxury vehicles the challenge is too much to pass up. The burglars put on disguises and waste no time in lifting limousines official racecars and Rolls-Royces (even stopping by a television studio to steal actor Lyle Waggoner's convertible). When Pace discovers that a recently stolen Cadillac has a million dollars worth of heroin in the trunk he destroys the car and the drugs which infuriates his adversarial partner Eugene (Jerry Daugirda). Just as Pace is stealing a bright yellow Mustang (code-named Eleanor) the Los Angeles police department gives chase tipped off by Eugene's anonymous call. This leads to the meat of the film a wild 40-minute pursuit which takes Pace and the police through five cities and leads to the destruction of 93 cars. Gone in 60 Seconds was a big hit for first time director/writer/producer/star H.B. Kip Raines (Giovanni Ribisi) is a cocky young car thief working with a crew to steal 50 cars for a very bad man whose nickname is "The Carpenter." Being young and cocky, Kip messes up, so it's up to his big brother, Randall "Memphis" Raines (Nicolas Cage), to come out of car thief retirement and save him. With a cast that includes Robert Duvall, Angelina Jolie, Delroy Lindo, Cage, and Ribisi, it would be easy to say this story wastes all their talents--which it does, but that's not the point. This is a Jerry Bruckheimer film. A good story and complex characters would only get in the way of the action scenes and slow the movie down. No, Gone in 60 Seconds (based on the cult 1974 film of the same name) is not about the stars as much as it's about cars. Fast cars. Rare cars. Wrecked cars. All cars. Too bad director Dominic Sena (Kalifornia) doesn't come across as more of a gearhead; he seems less interested in fast cars than fast cuts. But is this movie fun? Absolutely, and it's fun because it's so stupid. With pointless car chases and hackneyed dialogue in one of the most predictable plots of the year, Gone in 60 Seconds is a comic film that's not quite a parody of itself, but darn close. --Andy Spletzer

The Original
It was a few years after watching the remake of Gone in 60 Seconds before I learned that it was even a remake at all. Watching the original was pretty cool because they had similar scenes. What was even better though was the chase scene with Eleanor, a Mustang Mach I, and it lasted waaaay longer than the one with Nic Cage. If you love cars, then you have to have this movie

Great Movie
Gone in 60 Seconds
Usually I am not the type of guy that loves car movies, but I love this movie. The car action is good for the most part. The scenes that are meant to garner emotion do it well. The music on this movie is perfectly done. This movie was just brilliantly put together.

Kip Raines and his crew go on a boost (high profile car theft) for 50 cars and fail miserably. Kip's old brother, Memphis Raines, is contacted about Kip's failure. Memphis soon learns that they are going to kill Kip if Memphis can't get the cars in 3 days. So on the first day he assembles a small crew of men, and a woman, to help him steal 50 cars. On the second day they find out where all the cars are. On the third and final night they are going to steal all 50 cars. You are on the edge of your seat all the time. Memphis is unsure if they are even going to make it. That is different then most movies where they are trying to be positive.

The entire time this is going on, there is a timer that keeps appearing at the bottom of the screen. It is a count down until they are out of time. Kip is played to perfection with a combination of being scared, but still wanting to help. There are so many different stories going on in this movie, and it works very well. You see why Memphis left his brother, which is really tear jerking.

One gripe I have with the entire movie is a ridiculous jump sequence. The entire movie looks fairly realistic, but near the end of the movie they added an extremely fake looking jump sequence. All the events leading up to that moment are great, but the jump is just too fake. That is the only thing that knocks this down to four stars.
