Billed as U.K. TV's answer to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed, the supernatural drama Hex plays more like a coming-of-age story dressed in Gothic trappings. Christina Cole stars as Cassie Hughes, a young girl enrolled at Medenham Hall, a private school that once housed a coven of witches. Cassie, who struggles to fit in with her elitist and over-sexed classmates, discovers that she's even less like them than she thought when she develops telekinetic powers. The onset of these powers attracts the attention of Azazeal (Michael Fassbinder), leader of the Nephilim (the fallen angels of the Bible). What follows is a broad and frequently stylish soap opera that pits Cassie and her roommate Thelma (Jemima Rooper, who steals many scenes), who happens to be a ghost, against Azazeal as he attempts to control Cassie's body and soul--quite literally, as his plan is to impregnate her in order to allow the other Nephilim to invade the corporeal world. Cutting dialogue a la Buffy and a hip soundtrack should hook American viewers, as will a smattering of nudity and violence and surprisingly solid special effects. The three-disc set features the first six episodes of the first season and four from the second, and includes include a 23-minute documentary on the making of the series with interviews with the cast and creators, as well as a small collection of deleted scenes. -- Paul Gaita

moody gothic horror, UK style4
I liked this series a lot, despite some flaws. I loved the plot and the amazing camera work that set a fairly scary mood. There were scenes that were downright spooky.

This series worked for a few reasons: (1) great character development; (2) great acting; (3) even though the plot was fantastic (fallen angels and witches), they set up a mythology that made it all work; and (4) great dialogue. The main characters of Cassie with her demure shyness and Thelma with her brass (fill-in-the-blank) are a perfect pairing. Azazeal is the requisite brooding dark male with loads of sex appeal. These three have some of the best dialogues I've heard in a while. The supporting cast is really good too. Leon (resident jerk), Troy (greek god on campus) and the Headmaster are stellar. Also, the whole mythology was well crafted and they stayed true throughout. Lastly, the dialogue contained within these six episodes are almost Whedon-like (although not a Buffy clone and should not be compared - two very different animals) in their beauty. Characeters provided great lines that never get tired (especially Thelma).

I subtracted one star for two reasons. A huge problem I had with this dvd set is that this version has been cut and edited for American tv and sometimes it did effect the show's arc. I treasure my Region 2 version straight from the UK. Also, I had an issue with "possession" as in one case it was physically painful (random guy in bar who flirts w/Cassie) and in the other was so peaceful it happened while asleep (Troy). This did not detract from the overall experience.

As for extras, this set contains deleted scenes (very interesting), commentary by director Brian Grant for the 1st & 2nd episodes and a behind the scenes look. I highly recommend this series. It is very entertaining and stands up well under repeated viewings. I cannot wait for the second season although the creepy ending leaves me with some dread over how the series will progress......

Extremely entertaining5
Witty and has a plot. Shouldn't be compared to US genre - Buffy and Charmed, in a league of its own. Can't wait for the 2nd season to be available in US format.

Heck(x)2
After seeing the first two DVDs for Hex, I was disappointed. There is minimal story/plot line, the characters are lame, the special effects are strictly amateur. There are too many un-explained things going on that are obviously meant to keep us hooked, but not developed quickly enough to maintain our interest.

The main villain has little personality. The main heroine is clueless too far into the series. She really needed to develop a brain that could keep up with the events - example, Veronica Mars, first two seasons. The main character was hard to visualize becoming a force to be reckoned with, but since she left after the first season (6 episodes), that becomes a moot point.

I didn't bother with the third DVD. Although the reviews posted on Amazon were mostly positive, I have to agree with the few negative reports.
