What Dreams May ComeWhat Dreams May Come
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $2.48
#1 This movie is so high ranked because of how creative and ambitious the cinematography in this film is. The story would be lackluster without such a vast and beautiful scope of images.
The Wire - Seasons 1-4The Wire - Seasons 1-4
Buy new: $170.99 / Used from: $127.62
#2 By far the best show on television. The Wire is smart, eye-opening, honest and absolutely absorbing. The camera shots in this series pulled me into the harshness of drug based and the legitimate Baltimore economy and government. Some of the toughest storylines and twists to swallow.
The Shipping NewsThe Shipping News
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.23
#2 The Shipping News far outshines other films that try to carry the viewer through a dark plot. What is magnificent about this film is that every object, every shot reflects the tone of the movie. Although ultimately uplifting, the gray plot and colors of the Shipping News make for a deeply felt and quite vivid story.
The Fountain (Widescreen Edition)The Fountain (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.80
While this film is absolutely abstract, every scene makes you feel like you are watching something deeply profound unfold.
Little ChildrenLittle Children
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.49
I love how every scene, every angle, every movement makes my stomach turn. Although more subtle than some of the higher ranking films on this list, the cinematography in Little Children has just as much of an impact on how tragic its characters are.
BabelBabel
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.99
Beautiful varying locales in Babel. While the cinematography is less crucial in telling the story, the locations themselves add an austere or lonely quality sometimes. There is also some uplifting symbolism at the end.
Crazy/ BeautifulCrazy/ Beautiful
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $3.65
Green and blue tinted images pull me deep into the Romeo and Juliet-esque quality of this film. There's a looming sentiment of doom all throughout, despite the high school age of the characters.
Sex and Lucia (Unrated Edition)Sex and Lucia (Unrated Edition)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $9.31
Magnificent locales make every character in this film seem more elegant. Locations themselves are symbols in Sex and Lucia.
Pride & PrejudicePride & Prejudice
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $6.55
We all know the story, but it was the visual element of this film that made me love it.
The Last King of Scotland (Widescreen Edition)The Last King of Scotland (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.29
A stunning film; I feel like the cinematography was geared toward showing discrepancies and/or the power of each character.
Jarhead (Widescreen Edition)Jarhead (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $0.01
There are some amazing scenes in this movie that would stand alone as beautiful photographs.
Atonement (Widescreen Edition)Atonement (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.63
Poetry in moving pictures. There are so many scenes in Atonement that are perfectly poignant.
The Horse WhispererThe Horse Whisperer
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $5.90
The Bourne Identity (Widescreen Extended Edition)The Bourne Identity (Widescreen Extended Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.50
The Bourne Identity is amazingly well shot, considering the directors could have gotten away without elegant cinematography and stunning locations. The way this movie is shot makes it a much more thrilling action film.
Under the Tuscan Sun (Widescreen Edition)Under the Tuscan Sun (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.25
Very much a chick flick, but harder to predict than most. The importance of beautiful Tuscany and the shabby villa make for some great scenes.
