Following the trials and tribulations of the Fisher family funeral business after the death of their father, season 1 is some of the best TV I've ever seen - brave, funny and thought-provoking. Sadly later seasons could not match this promise.

More like a 'visual novel' than a show, The Wire offers up a multitude of rewards. Pitting the Baltimore PD against a west Baltimore drug gang, season 1 shows us the moral ambiguity and complex motivations on both sides. A slow burner that was absolutely gripping.

The twisted (but somehow logical) David world view is very much to the fore as Larry gets himself into scrape after scrape involving a combination of fictional, and "real" characters (i.e. real actors playing versions of themselves). A whisker behind Seinfeld as my favourite comedy.

Peep Show is just about the best sitcom this side of the Atlantic. Focusing on the relationship between Mark and Jez, a very odd couple who share a south London apartment, we see all the action through their eyes (and often hear their disturbing thoughts as well). Brilliantly warped and often quite depressing, Peep Show is nevertheless very very funny - all three seasons of it.

Again unmissable.
