Adventures of Superman - The Complete First SeasonAdventures of Superman - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $30.99 / Used from: $14.34
(1952) Grandpappy of the superhero TV series. As the Man of Steel, mild-mannered George Reeves set the standard for heroic posturings and manly flying poses. Okay, this Supes only dealt with street level criminals and the special effects weren't exactly earth-shaking stuff. But, still, George was charming and sincere, and he had that square jaw full of resolute goodness. I call him iconic!
Batman - The TV SeriesBatman - The TV Series
(1966) Glory in the campiness! Adam West and Burt Ward were immortalized as the Dynamic Duo in this hokey but tremendously fun and popular take on the Dark Knight. Ah, the days when you can just turn the camera on its side and pretend dudes were scaling the side of a building. Um, does anyone else have erotic dreams of Julie Newmar? Meowrr!
The Six Million Dollar Man (1974 TV series)The Six Million Dollar Man (1974 TV series)
"(1974) "Gentlemen, we can rebuild him." C'mon, now, admit it: Steve Austin gets as close to being a superhero without actually rocking a costume and a code name. Lee Majors utterly nails it as the astronaut turned bionic government operative. Dude even tangles with Bigfoot! An awesome, awesome show!"
The Bionic Woman: The Complete Season One [Region 2 Import non USA format]The Bionic Woman: The Complete Season One [Region 2 Import non USA format]
(1976) Fabulous spin-off to SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN. Lindsay Wagner brought heart and soul (and major babeness) to Jamie Sommers, sometime girlfriend of Steve Austin, as she receives her own infusion of bionics. Like Austin, she ends up working for O.S.I. Wagner was so good she won a Best Actress Emmy for this role. Note: For now, REGION 2 only.
The Secrets of Isis - The Complete SeriesThe Secrets of Isis - The Complete Series
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $17.64
(1975) "O Mighty Isis!" Gorgeous JoAnna Cameron plays Andrea Thomas, a bespectacled high school teacher who gets hold of an ancient Egyptian amulet which transforms her - in time of need - into the powerful Egyptian goddess dressed out in a sexy white miniskirt. And, of course, she battles evil. Remember her team-ups with Captain Marvel?
ElectraWoman and DynaGirl, Vol. 1ElectraWoman and DynaGirl, Vol. 1
Buy used from: $29.90
(1976) Short-lived but kinda fun half-hour series featured on the kid-friendly Krofft Supershow. Basically, a spoofy female version of Batman & Robin and catered to kid sensibilities. Man, they had some groovy gadgets! VHS ONLY!!
Wonder Woman - The Complete First SeasonWonder Woman - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $10.00
(1976) Oh, Lynda Carter...She flaunted that heady combo of knock-out looks and wide-eyed naivete, which weakened my knees way back then (and I was only 7). The 1st season took place during WW2; Season 2 updated things to contemporary times. The episodes were pedestrian stuff but, oh, Lynda Carter...Also, 3 episodes guest-starred Debra Winger as Wonder Girl.
Man From AtlantisMan From Atlantis
Buy used from: $8.50
(1977) Shades of Aquaman!! Ironically, this touts a fish-out-of-water premise. Patrick Duffy is wonderful as Mark Harris, the innocent amphibious Man from Atlantis who teams up with scientists from the Foundation for Oceanic Research to explore the mysterious oceanic depths. The f/x is clunky, but the charm is intact. VHS for the pilot.
The Amazing Spider-Man (1977)The Amazing Spider-Man (1977)
Buy used from: $59.99
(1977, TV Movie) Compared to today's f/x technology, this 1970's version lacks a little somethin'-somethin'. But I loved this one when I was a kid. I wasn't at first sold on Nicholas Hammond as graduate student Peter Parker (probably 'cause his Spidey never made with the jokes), but he grew on me. And David White was great as J. Jonah Jameson. VHS!
Adventures of Spiderman: Deadly DustAdventures of Spiderman: Deadly Dust
Buy used from: $127.76
(1978) My time capsule television viewing of choice. After the TV movie came the series, which turned out to be pretty decent. Or is that just nostalgia talking? I remember an evil Spidey clone somewhere...This VHS collects the first 2 episodes ("Deadly Dust") only.
The Incredible Hulk - The Complete First SeasonThe Incredible Hulk - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $18.75
(1978) Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno did their damn thing as Dr. Banner and his angry alter ego. This was must-see TV for me, back then, as CBS paired this show up with another favorite, THE DUKES OF HAZZARD. In honor of the great Bill Bixby, c'mon, say that line with me. "Don't make me angry, Mr. McGee. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
The Incredible Hulk Returns / The Trial of the Incredible HulkThe Incredible Hulk Returns / The Trial of the Incredible Hulk
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.21
(1988 & 1989, TV Movies) - Two movies featuring the mean green in torn up jeans, this time with Thor (...RETURNS)and Daredevil (TRIAL...) as his battling wingmen. with John Rhys-Davies as the Kingpin. So what's not to like?
The Death of the Incredible HulkThe Death of the Incredible Hulk
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.02
(1990, TV Movie) - Another chance for Dr. Banner to find a cure for being the Hulk; another chance that goes ka-plooey. Bittersweet stuff. Can you guess how the Hulk ends up?
Dr. Strange / MovieDr. Strange / Movie
Buy used from: $57.99
(1978, TV Movie) Peter Hooten disinterestedly stars as the Sorcerer Supreme, who goes up against the enchantress Morgan Le Fay. Slow moving and straying quite a ways from the source, I guess I can see why this movie still languishes in VHS! But, by the Dangling Danglers of the Dread Dormammu, I say that his costume might suck but the movie's still worth a peep!
Captain AmericaCaptain America
Buy used from: $8.50
(1979, TV Movie) Captain America is such a noble goody-goody, I imagine actors playing him find it a challenge to make him relatable. Doesn't help that these actors aren't A-listers. Reb Brown, with his shield and motorbike, is very bland as the Captain. Note also that the film takes a lot of liberties with this comic book legend. In VHS!
Captain America 2Captain America 2
Buy used from: $7.47
(1979, TV Movie) Christopher Lee adds much needed acting chops to this thing. Reb Brown's nonexciting super-soldier returns, this time to prevent a terrorist (Lee) from releasing a virus which accelerates aging. Better than the first film. And, hey, the costume's right this time (but for that goofy helmet)! In glorious VHS!
The Greatest American Hero - The Complete Series (Free Cape and Notebook Included)The Greatest American Hero - The Complete Series (Free Cape and Notebook Included)
Buy new: $76.99 / Used from: $60.97
(1981) The more-or-less superheroic escapades of Ralph Hinkley, a well-meaning school teacher who is given a red power suit by extraterrestrials. But what happens when Ralph loses the suit's instruction manual? Excellent and goofy action-comedy series, with a theme song that rocked tremendously.
Misfits of ScienceMisfits of Science
Buy used from: $34.95
(1985) I've fond memories of this one. A sexy but surly telekinetic, a rocker who shoots lightning, and an intellectual giant who shrinks. And led by a glib, non-powered scientist dude. It killed me when they cancelled this one. I really, really dug this show, and not just because of the muy caliente Courtney Cox. Why is this still only available in VHS?! Aaargh!!
Once a HeroOnce a Hero
Buy used from: $3.50
(1987) What happens when a comic book superhero crosses over into our world and meets his creator? And what happens when Captain Justice realizes that in the real world, he doesn't have super powers? This was a promising ABC comedy, but network competition was too tough. Cancelled, after only 3 episodes. Still, Captain Justice rocked! With Robert Forster co-starring as Gumshoe. VHS!
The Flash - The Complete SeriesThe Flash - The Complete Series
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $19.99
(1990) Yup, it was finally time for Barry Allen to shine - but then the spotlight was turned off. A short-lived venture, but awesome. The f/x was ridiculously good for a TV budget. My one beef was that the Flash costume looked too bulky. Else, it's all good in da hood (of Central City). Always fun to have Mark Hamill as the Trickster. And, FYI: that Brit, Amanda Pays, is quite hot...
Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First SeasonLois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $33.99 / Used from: $10.10
(1993) The one that made Clark sexy, and Lois even sexier (oh, that image of Teri Hatcher scantily wrapped in Superman's cape, how it still haunts me). Focusing more on Superman's "human" side, this show was entertaining and funny and didn't jump the shark until the clone wedding. IMO, Hatcher is tied with Margot Kidder in best portraying Lois Lane.
M.A.N.T.I.S.M.A.N.T.I.S.
(1994) When an African-American scientist is paralyzed by a bullet, he crafts an exoskeleton costume which allows him to walk and become a vigilante crimefighter. This is an okay, brooding series, with the stately Carl Lumbly as Miles Hawkins, a.k.a. M.A.N.T.I.S. Not shabby. Available as a Video Download.
Black ScorpionBlack Scorpion
Buy used from: $22.99
(1995, TV Movie) Over-the-top guilty pleasure. Wooden Joan Severance plays a detective who is kicked off the force but who then dons the sexy leathers and becomes a remorseless crimefighting vigilante. The corny villain is the Breathtaker, and the morphing car looks cool. Rated R, partly for nudity. Followed by a second TV movie and a TV series.
Black Scorpion II: AftershockBlack Scorpion II: Aftershock
Buy used from: $14.97
(1997, TV Movie) Another Roger Corman wink, and further doings with our dominatrix-outfitted crimestopper. This time, Black Scorpion goes up against the Gangsta Pranksta and the earthquake villainess Aftershock. What?! Severance didn't win an Emmy for this? R rated.
Black Scorpion - The TV SeriesBlack Scorpion - The TV Series
Buy used from: $179.95
(2001) In the television series, the role of Darcy Walker/Black Scorpion fell to Michelle Lintel. Unlike Severance, Lintel actually has a background in martial arts and thus was able to look more convincing in the action sequences. Still, hokiness (tempered by tons of babe alerts) ruled this short-lived series.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete First SeasonBuffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $9.95
(1997) Waifish Sarah Michelle Gellar is Buffy Summers, this generation's Slayer. To me, this was a perfect show. Written with sharp wit. Hilarious pop culture references. Multi-layered monsters. Smart & serious episodes (like "The Body"). The episode where the cast sings, another where they barely speak. And Spike rocks. As does Faith. And the Scooby Gang. I miss 'em.
The Crow: Stairway To Heaven - The Complete SeriesThe Crow: Stairway To Heaven - The Complete Series
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $24.60
(1998) Mark Dacascos isn't quite Brandon Lee, but he proves that he can do more than martial arts stuff (although, don't get it twisted, dude can seriously inflict some wushu). As the supernatural tragic hero Eric Draven, Dacascos is brooding and charismatic. An atmospheric show about horrific wrongs with retribution meted out by the dead, I wish this one had stuck around longer.
Now and AgainNow and Again
(1999) Quirky and wonderful. When loving dad and husband Michael Wiseman is killed in a subway accident, he really isn't. The U.S. government plants his brain and consciousness in a new, genetically enhanced body and puts him to work. This, even as Michael pines for his family, who doesn't know he's still alive. Bob your head to the smooth theme song. But beware the Eggman!
Dark Angel - The Complete SeriesDark Angel - The Complete Series
Buy new: $44.99 / Used from: $42.95
(2000) This is where Jessica Alba first started turning heads. Set in a near and dystopian future, a genetically engineered girl named Max (Alba) bursts from the confines of a military installation and attempts to live out a life of freedom and choice. But the government will insist on playing silly buggers.
Witchblade - The Complete SeriesWitchblade - The Complete Series
Buy new: $44.99 / Used from: $42.00
(2001) - First the TV movie, now the series. An ancient and mystical armored gauntlet lends hard-bitten Police Detective Sara Pezzini a slew of superhuman powers. This one melds supernatural fantasy with gritty cop drama. But, frankly, it couldn't hold my interest enough. Yancy Butler is solid, though, and I liked her aggressive take. A lukewarm thumbs up.
The Tick - The Entire SeriesThe Tick - The Entire Series
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $13.95
(2001) Spoooon!! Not as good or daffy as the animated Fox series, but pretty good (and daffy), nonetheless. Patrick Warburton, with his massive build and his booming voice, makes for a perfectly dense Tick. To the unfamiliar, this is more of an anti-superhero superhero series. In a way, kind of what SEINFELD was to comedy shows. Care for a skewering of superhero themes, anyone?
Smallville - The Complete First SeasonSmallville - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $6.90
(2001) - A reimagining of Clark Kent's youthhood in Smallville, this teen action/drama series strays quite a bit from the source, but still manages to be darn entertaining. Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum are superb in respectively embodying Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. Check this one out.
Mutant X - The Complete First SeasonMutant X - The Complete First Season
Buy used from: $80.99
(2001) Ah, genetic manipulation, that old tried and true! By Marvel Studios, telling of a scientist taking a few special-powered mutants under his wing, and off they go to protect other mutants. The acting is plywood, and the gorgeous cast takes away from a certain believability. But, for what it's worth, Mutant X grew on me. And how hot is Victoria Pratt? (Answer: very hot)
Birds of Prey: The Complete SeriesBirds of Prey: The Complete Series
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $25.49
(2002) This is the future and, in New Gotham, Batman has vanished. But he leaves behind a daughter, who now prowls around as the Huntress. Teaming with the crippled Oracle (formerly Batgirl) and clairvoyant newcomer Dinah Lance, these Birds of Prey hunt down Gotham's worst. I was SO bummed when this show got axed. An AWESOME series.
Blade The Series - The Complete SeriesBlade The Series - The Complete Series
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $16.36
(2006) - This might've had potential. Half human/half vampire antihero Blade continues to seek out and destroy his blood-sucking brethren. Hip hop artist Kirk "Sticky Fingaz" Jones took over for WEsley Snipes, but was allowed only 12 episodes before the plug was pulled. Not a terrible show.
Heroes - Season OneHeroes - Season One
Buy new: $48.99 / Used from: $19.95
(2006) NBC struck oil with this one. If superpowered humans did exist, I guess this is about as realistic a chronicling of how it'll go down. No costumes and no silly superhero codenames, this not-to-be-missed drama is enlivened and grounded by a great cast and taut storytelling. Hiero is infectious! Save the Cheerleader, save NBC.
Painkiller JanePainkiller Jane
Buy new: $30.99 / Used from: $13.20
(2007) Jane Vasco discovers she has amazing recuperative powers and joins a covert agency which keeps tabs on super-powered freaks called Neuros. Boy, Kristanna Loken does that deadly dull, deadpan acting thing really well. After TERMINATOR 3 and her stint here, I'm hoping there isn't a pattern developing...And just so you know, the 2005 TV movie is better.
Bionic Woman - Volume OneBionic Woman - Volume One
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $11.03
(2007) *Sigh* I had such expectations. Maybe if Lindsay Wagner hadn't been so luminous as Jamie Sommers, Michelle Ryan would've been given more of a benefit. As it is, Michelle is plenty attractive and nice, but simply isn't as appealing as Lindsay. When you throw in the plodding stories and the sluggish supporting cast (excepting the brilliant Katee Sackhoff)...*sigh*
Who Wants to Be A Superhero? (2 DVD Set)Who Wants to Be A Superhero? (2 DVD Set)
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $24.94
(2006) Just for kicks, I'm throwing in this campy reality show, starring comic book deity, Stan "the Man" Lee, as the show's host. True, this isn't for everyone, but, man, it is Stan friggin' Lee!! (And, I ask you, how can you not dig Major Victory?)
