![]() | Sabriel (The Abhorsen Trilogy) by Garth Nix
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 This book is set in a wonderful surrealistic version of medieval/modern England.
The magic is very well-thought out. Sabriel is a version of a necromancer, but she lays the dead to rest instead of calling them up.
Charter and Free Magic are also very well-done. A must read for anyone who breathes!

![]() | The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, Book 1) by Philip Pullman
Buy new: $7.50 / Used from: $0.01 If you like parallel universes, this book is for you. It's very well-written, and the concept of familiar-like "dæmons" is one of the best parts. This is the best of the trilogy.

![]() | Leo@fergusrules.com by Arne Tangherlini
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $0.01 Technically this book isn't fantasy, but science fiction. Still, it's good enough to pretend to be a fantasy book.
It's like Alice in Wonderland crossed with video games, a quick read that will nevertheless haunt you for years.
|
![]() | The Folk Keeper (Jean Karl Books) by Franny Billingsley
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $0.01 The main character is very cool, and it taps well into the myth of the selkie, or seal-maiden. I loved the folk, menacing little things that are "mostly teeth".
Also read "Well-wished" by the same author.

![]() | Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Neil Gaiman is the master of all things dark and beautiful, and Neverwhere is one of his best books. It's about an ordinary but strong-hearted man who slips through the cracks into a mystical and hideous underground London.
|
![]() | Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.39 This is a great werewolf book with, unfortunately, a so-so ending. Still, it's worth reading for the werewolf descriptions.
This book has been made into a horror movie, which amuses me, as it's really a young adult book. And it's not scary at all.
|
![]() | The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle
Buy new: $9.75 / Used from: $3.90 This book is definitely worth reading for its magician and unicorn. If you liked it, there's also a movie of it.
|
![]() | The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure (The 'Good Parts' Version) by William Goldman
Buy used from: $14.99 Even if you don't like completely traditional fantasy, read this book. It's clever and really, really funny.
|
![]() | Shade's Children by Garth Nix
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 This, too, is really science fiction. If you like dark monsters, though, read it.
|
![]() | Merro Tree (Del Rey Discovery) by Katie Waitman
Buy used from: $1.68 It has an.. err.. *interesting* protagonist, and it's very well-written.
|
![]() | Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell: A Novel by Susanna Clarke
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.45 You'll need patience to get through this book, but it has a wonderful take on magicians.
|
![]() | Tales from Earthsea (The Earthsea Cycle, Book 5) by Ursula K. LeGuin
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $0.20 A good introduction, or endpiece, to Ursula Leguin's Earthsea series. If you've got a short attention span, this book may not be for you, but its dragons are not to be missed out on.
|
![]() | Dragon's Blood: The Pit Dragon Chronicles, Volume One by Jane Yolen
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $0.01 Read this book. If you love dragons or gritty realism or desert planets, you will not be disappointed.
|
![]() | The Meq (Meq, The) by Steve Cash
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $0.01 The writing style is really good, and it's a very original idea. Don't miss the use of the Basque Language.
|
![]() | Idlewild by Nick Sagan
Buy used from: $12.93 With an excellent cyber-reality and a spooky main character, this book is not to be missed.
|
![]() | The Dark Horse Book Of Hauntings by Mike Mignola
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.44 All of the Dark Horse books are good, but this one is particularly fun to read.
|
![]() | Wraeththu by Storm Constantine
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $3.25 Strong characters, nice plot– read it for the magic if nothing else.
And of course you should read Harry Potter and Lord of the rings. If you like fantasy and you don't, you are out of your mind.
