This book is set in a wonderful surrealistic version of medieval/modern England. The magic is very well-thought out. Sabriel is a version of a necromancer, but she lays the dead to rest instead of calling them up. Charter and Free Magic are also very well-done. A must read for anyone who breathes!

Technically this book isn't fantasy, but science fiction. Still, it's good enough to pretend to be a fantasy book. It's like Alice in Wonderland crossed with video games, a quick read that will nevertheless haunt you for years.

Neil Gaiman is the master of all things dark and beautiful, and Neverwhere is one of his best books. It's about an ordinary but strong-hearted man who slips through the cracks into a mystical and hideous underground London.

This book is definitely worth reading for its magician and unicorn. If you liked it, there's also a movie of it.

This, too, is really science fiction. If you like dark monsters, though, read it.

You'll need patience to get through this book, but it has a wonderful take on magicians.

Read this book. If you love dragons or gritty realism or desert planets, you will not be disappointed.

With an excellent cyber-reality and a spooky main character, this book is not to be missed.

Strong characters, nice plot– read it for the magic if nothing else. And of course you should read Harry Potter and Lord of the rings. If you like fantasy and you don't, you are out of your mind.
