One of my all-time favorites. This movie is a Terry Gilliam classic. It's got a very twisted and dystopian view of the future... one ruled by a buearocracy which is completely out of touch with reality. Sometimes, I really think the world is actually heading this way.

Buy used from: $49.99
A... possibly THE signature dystopian future. When people call something "Orwellian", they're referring to this story.
Spaced - Definitive Collectors' Edition [Region 2 Import - UK]Spaced - Definitive Collectors' Edition [Region 2 Import - UK]
Buy used from: $23.02
This is the original series created by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright... they went on to make Shaun of the Dead, and not Hot Fuzz. This is only available in Region 2, so make sure you can play non-US disks. It's so good you may just want to go BUY a region free player for it... I did.
Bagdad CafeBagdad Cafe
Buy used from: $38.97
It's certainly in the "quirky" category. It was originally a German production called "Out of Rosenheim" (if my spelling's correct). It centers around the relationship between a German tourist who ends up stuck in a small roadside motel/cafe in the middle of the Mojave Desert, and the manager of said cafe. I also find it noteable as one of the few movies where Jack Palance doesn't play a bad guy.
Dark City (New Line Platinum Series)Dark City (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy used from: $1.99
With an incredibly intense visual world, this movie explores the theme of what it means to be human, and that relationship to our memories. If you change the memories, do you change the man?
The Addams Family / Addams Family ValuesThe Addams Family / Addams Family Values
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $6.78
I picked this combo DVD so I could say it once, but they're available separately as well. The original Addams family TV show really gave the sense that people were laughing AT the Addams Family. However, these two movies celebrate their oddness in such a delightful way. I'm saddened that Raul Julia has passed away... he was masterful in this role.
A Clockwork OrangeA Clockwork Orange
Buy used from: $8.49
A Kuberick classic, this movie is highly disturbing, dystopic, twisted, and at times quite humorous in its extremes.
Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)
Buy used from: $2.45
A Dystopian future where humanity's huburis comes back to bite it in the arse. The story centers around a "Blade Runner" (Harrison Ford) who has the job of hunting down replicants; artifically created humans who are illegally living on Earth. The pace can be a bit slow at times, but this film is deep and disturbing in its exploration of what it means to be human.
Neil Gaiman's NeverwhereNeil Gaiman's Neverwhere
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $9.90
Neil Gaiman creates an entire world right alongside modern day London. When Richard Mayhew is drawn into that world, he struggles quite hard to return to his normal life. However, in some ways, this apparently chaotic and twisted world begins to show him what it means to truly live.
GormenghastGormenghast
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $18.94
This is a BBC Miniseries adaptation of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast series. Peake has created an entire other world. The visuals are stunning, the story is deeply disturbing, and it meets every one of my criteria for this list.
A Boy & His DogA Boy & His Dog
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $7.80
This post-apocolyptic story centers around a survivor and his dog. The dog (for reasons I don't believe were ever actually explained) can speak, and is arguably more intelligent than Johnson's character. Life for Johnson is a pretty tough struggle for survival, but then he stumbles upon a strange below-ground society who seem to have a lot going for them... until he finds out why they let him in.
VideodromeVideodrome
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $5.24
I haven't actually seen this one yet, but according to everyone I've talked to who has, this fits right in.
Tank GirlTank Girl
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $4.50
Another post-apocolyptic world, Tank Girl is a rather bizarre and surreal take on this genre.
Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Special Edition)Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.49
Another Kuberick masterpiece. Think of it as a pre-apocolyptic dystopia.
The Man Who Fell to Earth (Special Edition)The Man Who Fell to Earth (Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.34
I remember seeing this film back when it came out... when watching it again years later, I could see what prompted me to remember it fondly, but I'm going to warn you, this one really does move slowly. Still, if you find that my other suggestions meet with your approval, this one fits in.
Logan's RunLogan's Run
Buy used from: $3.98
This one would also make my list of "The best bad sci-fi films of all-time". It definately has a bit of a dated feel, but I think the issues it explores are still relevant today.
FeedFeed
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.93
This movie is possibly the most disturbing film I've ever seen (And I was a television news photographer for 3 years)... it requires a strong stomach at certain points. However, the important thing to keep in mind is that even though this story is fiction, the world of the Feeders really does exist. You've been warned.
Se7en [Region 2]Se7en [Region 2]
Buy used from: $40.47
A serial killer with a rather unique motivation... I won't say much more in case you haven't seen it. This movie is based upon the standard "cops tracking down a really bad guy", but the two things that make this great are 1) just how incredibly twisted the bad guy is, and 2) how he manages to manipulate the cops and make them a part of his game.
AmelieAmelie
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.00
If that girl on the cover didn't draw you in... well, ok, I'll tell you. This story is about a waitress who dedicates her life to doing nice things for others... secretly. Sounds all sweet and mushy, and it is sweet, but oh, so very quirky. If you find some commonality with me in terms of the other choices on my list, you'll probably like this one too.
TampopoTampopo
Buy new: $14.99
A Japanese "Noodle Western". Very strange, and very touching
The City of Lost ChildrenThe City of Lost Children
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $12.50
Fits all my criteria... hey, it's a French film after all.
Harold and MaudeHarold and Maude
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.11
Not Dystopian, but certainly dark humor and quirkyness. This movie always makes me cry... but in a good way.
Time Bandits (Special Edition)Time Bandits (Special Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $9.62
Another Gilliam classic. It's actually part of a trillogy of movies, unrelated by plot or characters, but rather related by a theme: Time Bandits:: The Dreams of Youth Brazil:: The Dreams of mid-life Baron Munchousen:: The dreams of old age This is a fine example of dark humor and quirkyness. And starring some fantastic Little People.
The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert (Extra Frills Edition)The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert (Extra Frills Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $10.86
A quirky tale of three drag queens from Sydney who embark upon a cross-continent road trip in a somewhat unreliable, old, and eventually very pink bus.
Lexx Series One "1.0: I Worship His Shadow"Lexx Series One "1.0: I Worship His Shadow"
Buy used from: $28.99
This one goes in and out of print... Lexx is another on my list of "The Best of Bad Sci-Fi". It's dark, dystopian, quirky, and has 4 seasons worth of stuff. Season one is actually 4 movie-length shows, seasons two through four are in the standard one-hour tv series format.
The League of Gentlemen - The CollectionThe League of Gentlemen - The Collection
Buy new: $75.99 / Used from: $77.16
First of all, NO, this is nothing to do with the superhero -based "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". This is a British series which can best be described as "A combination of Monty Python and Deliverance". It is wonderfully twisted in every respect.
Terry Pratchett's Discworld - Soul MusicTerry Pratchett's Discworld - Soul Music
Buy used from: $75.95
I have friends who usually hate animated movies... they still love this. This is a VERY FAITHFUL animated BBC miniseries taken almost verbatim from Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel, Soul Music. Dark humor and quirkyness abound - hey, it's got Death as a main character. (See also, Wyrd Sisters)
WizardsWizards
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.47
It's a Bakshi... of course it's dark and twisted.
JabberwockyJabberwocky
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.99
A lesser-known Gilliam film, Jabberwocky stars Michael Palin as a disinherited cooper's apprentice trying to make a life for himself in the Dark Ages. In some ways, it's quite accurate in its portrayal of just how unenlightened and grimy the Dark Ages really were.
THX 1138 - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)THX 1138 - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $4.99
It pains me to suggest anything that puts more money in George Lucas' pocket, but this film fits the theme
Johnny MnemonicJohnny Mnemonic
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.75
Based on a William Gibson short story, this is a dystopic, cyberpunk story that still manages to thrill me. Okay, the dolphin was a bit much, but Keanu Reeves' "I want room service" rant was just wonderful.
Carnivale - The Complete First Two SeasonsCarnivale - The Complete First Two Seasons
Buy new: $98.99 / Used from: $59.95
This series was absolutely brilliant. The only bad thing about it was the fact that the producers were originally going to end it with the finale of Season Two, only to be told, "hey, we want you to do another, so don't wrap everything up", then after it was in the can, the network said "Nevermind, you are going to be cancelled". Lots of things left open, but oh, so worth watching.
EquilibriumEquilibrium
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $6.01
Very dystopic... a future reality where everyone is forced to take a drug that inhibits emotion, and what happens to one man who is supposed to enforce the rules, but ends up on the wrong (but morally right) side of the equasion)
GattacaGattaca
Buy used from: $4.28
A story of a future where genetic selection is paramount, and of one man (with the wrong genes) who refuses to allow his DNA to decide his fate.
PeckerPecker
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.04
A John Waters film about a young man (unfortunately named "Pecker") who has a real gift for candid photography, and what happens to him and his whole personal world when he begins to receive critical and financial rewards for that work.
Donnie Darko (Widescreen Edition)Donnie Darko (Widescreen Edition)
Buy used from: $3.65
It's even hard to describe this one without giving a lot away. A 6' rabbit (Anyone else thinking of "Harvey"?) and several other odd phenomena lead Donnie toward a life-altering discovery.
Edward Scissorhands (Widescreen Anniversary Edition)Edward Scissorhands (Widescreen Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.50
So I Married an Axe MurdererSo I Married an Axe Murderer
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.25
Mike Meyers is a comic genius. So I married an Axe Murderer is one of his earlier theatrical works, but is among my favorite. It's definately high on the quirky factor... that and it's got haggis in.
Run Lola RunRun Lola Run

Natural Born KillersNatural Born Killers
Buy used from: $2.20
I've never been a huge fan of Woody Harrelson, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of this film. Very twisted.
