A must for parents with sensory challenged kids
My grandson has problems with sensory intergration. My daughter is doing a wonderful job of helping him overcome these challenges. This book is very useful to her in working with him.
Helped Us on the Road to Recovery
I was lucky enough to be given this book, in report form, at a time in my life when I was at my "witts-end" - almost 6 years ago. It was a lifesaver! I read it and felt like this lady, Jeanne Ganz, knew my child inside and out - finally someone knew what we were going thru and how to help us.
We were grateful that Jeanne's office was 45 minutes away. I requested to our Special Ed. Coordinator that Jeanne evaluate my daughter (age 5 at the time). It wasn't until we met her, that Meghan started receiving help for her Sensory Integration Dysfunction (Sensory Processing Disorder). She had it so bad and so diverse that it was hard for others to "get." Meghan spoke very early (unlike the norm and had good muscle tone)- she wasn't exactly the typical sensory kid - however, she was the typical sensory kid to someone who knew what they were dealing with!!
Meghan had a laundry list of sensory issues: tactile defensive, auditory defensive, sensory modulation issues, hypo-/hyper-responsiveness, visual perception problems, and social insecurity. I literally used this book as a guide by breaking down each sense and then worked with the suggestions Jeanne mentions in her book for each sense. It is written in a down-to-earth and easy-to-understand way. She also gives information about therapies available to help SPD kids.
Meghan is perfectly fine now - I even wrote a children's book about her - and yes, Jeanne Ganz is "Miss Jeanne" in the book. As far as we are concerned - INCLUDING SI FOR PARENTS - rightfully deserves 10 stars ********** Thank you Jeanne for all your wisdom, advice, shoulder, and cheerful grin at a time when we really needed it!! :)Meghan's World: The Story of One Girl's Triumph over Sensory Processing Disorder

Hats off to Jeanne Ganz
As a mom to a preschool child with Sensory Modulation and as an adult with Sensory Integration Dysfunction myself I can tell you this book is PACKED with easy terms, stories and sensible strategies to help. The focus of this book is clearly on children of all ages (I noticed their was a reviewer that didn't feel the book could help her younger child, I completely disagree, but every family has to work with this disorder within their means). I am putting her tactics in place with both my 3 year old child and with my 20 month old (not diagnosed yet).
This book reminds me of a recipe book, it is not very long and overwhelming, it gets to the heart of matters. Here is the thing though, I don't always follow a recipe to the ingredient, and I find I have to mix in some of my own seasonings. For parents that are searching for answers I am finding out it isn't just one method that will work, I might have to tweak my tone or do slightly alter a strategy but this book is PRACTICAL. . I have read 5 other books on this subject to date.
So how practical is practical? Her strategies are as easy as avoiding touching of the head and face for children that have tactile system issues.....oh, had I known only a couple of months ago what I have read in the book. She gives strategies for trimming and clipping of nails, combing hair, bathing, haircuts, and so much more. I unfortunately learned some of the things prior to reading the book (trail and error) but I definitely picked up many new strategies.
Thank you to Jeanne Ganz!
