Review
'If I could select one group of individuals for people to "really" pay attention to when grappling with chronic unhappiness, I could not think of a better group than these authors. Not only are they consummate scientists, but they are each personally immersed in the moment-to-moment mindfulness that they teach. This book brings together the contemplative practices of both science and insight meditation in an effective fashion that is understandable to the ordinary person - no esoteric practice or mental health background is necessary. Read it and see for yourself!' - "Marsha M. Linehan, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Washington, USA" 'A revolutionary treatment approach. For depression sufferers, this is a truly useful guide to achieving emotional balance. For mental health professionals, it should be mandatory reading. I recommend this book and companion CD most highly.' - "Daniel Goleman, PhD, author of Emotional Intelligence" 'An invaluable resource not only for those who suffer from depression, but for anyone familiar with the downward spiral of negative thinking and self-doubt. The authors of this book explore the reasons for depression and give us guidance and support, along with useful tools to find a way through it.' -" Sharon Salzberg, author of The Force of Kindness" 'Using mindfulness training to prevent and treat depression is a novel strategy in the West, though it is a traditional application of Eastern meditation practice. Whether you struggle with depression or simply want to understand your mind and emotions better, you will find this book accessible and useful. Depression is epidemic in our society, and I would love to see this sensible treatment approach gain ground.' -" Andrew Weil, MD, author of 8 Weeks to Optimum Health and Healthy Aging"

Good if you put the time into it.4
Enjoyed the audiobook and meditation CD, but hard to make time to do the meditations as suggested.

A fresh approach to a ignored issue5
This text really has helped me to be able to see how letting my mind wonder and follow the same path all the time is an enormous part of the problem. Written in a way that allows you to understand it without the need to be a psychology egg-head. Teach yourself to slow down, enjoy life, and learn some REAL ways to beat your depression without the meds.

I want to help you3
I struggled with depression for 15 years. I started getting depressed when I went to college and started living on my own with no supervision. I started drinking and began having premarital sex. These behaviors escalated as most empty, immoral behaviors generally do. My problems never got better, they only got worse. Despite knowing my behavior was wrong, I continued to live a sinful lifestyle. That all changed when I realized that I was a poor, wretched, hopeless sinner that deserved death from a just and holy God. Once you are broken and are deeply sorry for your wicked ways, and then ask Jesus Christ for forgiveness, then and only then can the grip of depression begin to release it's grasp.
Depression doesn't go away immediately. I didn't stop taking my medications. But what does happen is that you have someone to talk to about it. You also have God's Word to inspire you and lift you up. I find that the more I pray and read my Bible, the less influence depression has on me. I trust in Jesus and know that eventually I will no longer need the medication and will be "cured" of my depresison.
*** Please remember, don't stop taking your meds. I can't stress that enough. It's not that I am not sure of my salvation or "cure", it's that I am not sure of yours. ***
Remember, realize it's our sinful nature that makes us depressed.
Repent and turn away from your sins,
Relinquish control of your life over to Jesus Christ with all your heart,
Read your Bible and pray everyday.
God Bless!
