![]() | LucasArts Classic Adventures (DOS)
Buy used from: $38.33 ZAK MCKRACKEN AND THE ALIEN MINDBENDERS
A game long-since out of print, "Zak McKracken" was a fun, if forgettable game.
First designed with the intention of being a much more serious game, what little comedy exists isn't all that funny, and feels like the afterthought it is.
If you can find it, it's certainly worth your time to play it, but don't break the bank over this one.

![]() | LucasArts Macintosh Archives Volume 1
Buy used from: $50.00 MANIAC MANSION
Though the graphics and gameplay are somewhat primitive when compared to other games in the library, it's ground-breaking in its use of multiple characters, cut scenes and multiple endings.
The easiest way to get your hands on a copy may be an abandonware website, though it can also be bought on eBay or (along with many other classic adventures) in the "Lucas Archives Volume 1".

![]() | Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (PC)
Buy used from: $44.99 Last Crusade" is the first (thought not necessarily the best) adventure made starring Indiana Jones.
What makes the game stand out is it's "IQ" system, in which the game must be played several different ways to achieve the perfect score of 800. Many puzzles have alternate solutions that, while all leading to the same eventual result, had minor effects on the overall game play experience.
|
![]() | Loom
Buy used from: $79.99 LOOM" is a much darker adventure, with puzzles solved by using songs played on a magical staff.
It can be frustrating to fully master the game play. Characters talk in abstract, and there is a lot of back story, but it a rich, tapestry of a story that is well worth the effort.
The only real drawback here is that it was originally intended to be a trilogy, and many conflicts are left unresolved.

![]() | Secret of Monkey Island
Buy used from: $15.95 The first game in the popular "Monkey Island" series. If you liked "Pirates of the Caribbean" (what with the strong female characters, niave heroes and undead ghost pirates) you'll love the misadventures of Guybrush Threepwood, wannabe pirate.
|
![]() | Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (PC) (DOS)
Buy used from: $78.99 The second game in the "Monkey Island" series. Easily one of the best adventure games ever made, it expands exponentially on the fun and hilarity of the first. "Revenge" involves much more elaborate puzzles, and a wider variety of locations.
Bonus points to those of you who can spot the direct "homages" that "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" makes to this game.
|
![]() | Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle (DOS)
Buy used from: $34.00 The sequel to "Maniac Mansion", it features much improved graphics and full-voice dialogue, still keeping the fundamentals of what made the original such a success. Back is the use of multiple characters to solve puzzles, although their use is enforced at specific times, meaning much of the open-endedness of "Maniac Mansion" is lost.
What makes it the better game is its improved story.
|
![]() | Sam & Max Hit the Road
Buy used from: $9.99 One of the few games to get such a recent update from LucasArts, "Sam and Max Hit the Road" is a hilarious romp through the "arm pits" of America.
Featuring outlandish puzzles and banter riddled with non sequitirs, "Hit the Road" is an acquired taste. It may not be the most rewarding experience for fanatics, but the sheer craziness more than makes up for the inanity of the puzzles.
|
![]() | Full Throttle
Buy used from: $2.99 One of the more serious entries in the library, "Full Throttle" follows the adventures of a down-and-out leader of a bike gang.
It takes place in desolate deserts during a rather post-apocalyptic future. All the characters mumble in low, gravely voices, scheming all the while. Its gravitas is almost negated by the thinness of the story, but it still maintains an atmosphere of harshness.
|
![]() | The Dig
Buy used from: $2.00 The Dig" is a very solemn game. Though it stays true to the point and click, it is more closely akin to that of "Myst", with puzzles involving alien crystals and machinery as apposed to character interactions and item use.
The player is often alone and isolated as they explore caves and the remains of broken space ships. It isn't without its drama, but it all feels rather sterile.
|
![]() | The Curse of Monkey Island
Buy used from: $19.34 The third game in the "Monkey Island" series. Much of the series' tone changes with this game -- fans are divided on the merits of said alterations.
For those used to the lush 3-D visuals of today's games, CoMI may be easier to swallow than some of the older, more pixelated games in the library. Boasting feature-quality animation, the cartoony graphics are particularly noteworthy here.
|
![]() | Grim Fandango
Buy new: $64.49 / Used from: $25.94 Grim Fandango" is one of the most epic, engulfing games in the library.
Set in the land of the dead over the course of a four year span, it fits in perfectly along side all the best noirs of the time, perfectly encapsulating that feel into an adventure game.
The only frustration may be the new keyboard-oriented controls. It has a bit of a learning curve, but after a while itÂ’s second nature.
|
![]() | Escape from Monkey Island
Buy used from: $10.98 The fourth game in the "Monkey Island" series, and the most reviled by die-hard fans. Under new designers, the style of humour gets an overhaul. While it is funny, it may leave some wanting for the sharp wit of the earlier games.
Also, in abandoning the mouse for the keyboard, it creates many maneuverability issues.
All the same, it still retains much of the charm of the series as a whole.
