![]() | When I Was Born for the 7th Time by Cornershop
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $0.01 Whoa. Wonderful mix of Indian music, dance and britpop. Didn't particularly care for their last one though where they seemed to abandon everything that made them special.
![]() | The Very Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions by Elvis Costello & the Attractions
Buy used from: $1.00 |
![]() | The Very Best of Cream by Cream
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.35 Another band which depending on what kind of mood I'm in determines how I rate 'em. Generally they're pretty terrific. I could do without the extended jams which you really only need to suffer through on their live stuff.
![]() | Chronicle, Vol. 1: The 20 Greatest Hits by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.50 A great American band that doesn't get it's just due. Fogerty wrote songs that when you heard 'em it's as if you've known them all your life. Their best songs ARE their singles but that doesn't mean their albums aren't worthy
![]() | Marshall Crenshaw by Marshall Crenshaw
Buy new: $8.96 / Used from: $2.25 Simply perfect pop music
![]() | Staring at the Sea: The Singles by The Cure
Buy used from: $2.06 A great great band who are kind of hard to classify. They perform some excellent alternative pop and set the stage for what would become goth.
![]() | Cypress Hill by Cypress Hill
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.66 Latino hip-hop. Endorsed the legalization of marijuana. With their stoned out beats and B Real's nasal vocals these guys always sounded as if they were high. Their first two albums are their best. They kinda lost some street cred when their popularity crossed over to the alternative rock scene. True originals regardless.
![]() | Machine Gun Etiquette by The Damned
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $10.07 1st generation British punk band. Put out an album before the Pistols, Clash..etc. They are also one of the longest lasting of the original punk bands and have gone through numerous chnages in their lineup and sound.
![]() | Violator by Depeche Mode
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.13 No matter what you might think, they ARE an important band. One of the first bands to embrace synthesizers successfully, they basically are THE synth pop band. Also Martin Gore became a really good songwriter on the way and they are still going strong!
![]() | His Best : The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection by Bo Diddley
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.74 Very influential artist. His guitar work anticipated many of the great guitar heroes of the 60's
![]() | You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur Jr.
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.56 Let's hear it for great guitar noise! Dinosaur Jr's albums can be a bit uneven but it's worth owning quite a few. Their early albums led the ground work (for better or worse) for what became alternative rock in the 90's. Just when that sound became popular J. Mascis kinda abandoned it.
![]() | The Chronic by Dr. Dre
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.34 This was a tough call. Dre has primarily had success as a producer and even on this album others tend to outshine. Also, admittingly some of the lyrics here can be a bit of a turnoff but ultimately I just couldn't ignore Dre and his impact on gangster rap. He's one of my favorites.
![]() | My Blue Heaven: The Best of Fats Domino by Fats Domino
Buy used from: $2.97 Doesn't get the respect that a lot of early rock & roll artists get and maybe he doesn't deserve it, but his easy going songs are classics from the 50's-60's
![]() | The Last Broadcast by Doves
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.32 Their name might not be as familar as some of their British contemporaries but they produce brilliant dream-like pop.
![]() | Hi-Fi Sci-Fi by Dramarama
Buy used from: $0.01 Another band that coulda shoulda been big. These Jersey guys were a welcome relief in the late 80's. Not as gritty as the Replacements they never made an album that wasn't worth a listen. Just great song after song.
![]() | The Very Best of The Drifters
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $3.19 The Drifters lineup throughout their history was so completely chaotic that it sometimes overshadows their accomplishments. Nice mix of a more pop sounding R&B.
![]() | Southern Rock Opera by Drive-By Truckers
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.93 Easily one of my favorite present day groups. I guess you'd call it country-rock but perhaps just Southern Rock would be more appropriate. Since the late 90's they have made great after great records
![]() | Drugstore by Drugstore
Buy used from: $1.80 |
![]() | Greatest by Duran Duran
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.47 Would they have been as big without MTV? No. They still would have "made it" however because so many of their songs are just great, harmless but tasty pop
![]() | Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.99 What can I say? His legend is justified.
![]() | Echo & the Bunnymen by Echo & the Bunnymen
Buy new: $13.96 / Used from: $4.64 Admittingly they made their share of crap and some of their lyrics can be a bit dicey but their post punk psychedelic sound is great. If you're curious I'd say start with "Ocean Rain"
![]() | Another Green World by Eno
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.50 Eno has done it all and as great as his rep already is he deserves even more credit for for his profound influence on much of the music we hear today
![]() | Eurythmics - Greatest Hits by Eurythmics
Buy used from: $0.28 One of my favorite synth pop bands of the 80's. I have always loved Lennox's voice
![]() | The Real Thing by Faith No More
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.98 Wow. Heavy metal, funk, hip-hop. They were always a good band but really hit their stride when Mike Patton joined. This is probably their most accessible album and if you like it you just MUST hear their next one-Angel Dust
![]() | The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall by The Fall
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.85 Despite the fact that I usually can't understand a word Mark E. Smith is saying, I have always loved the Fall. Their tons of albums can make it difficult to know where to start. Generally British fans like their earlier work while Americans like their "Brix period" when they became a bit more accessible. Both are great and if you like Pavement you really should have a listen.
![]() | Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.50 True originals and who could have predicted their almost mainstream success. They were always just too weird. Wonderful, but weird. I don't even know how to classify them
![]() | The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac (2CD) by Fleetwood Mac
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $9.98 Difficult people will usually say that Fleetwood Mac WERE a great band before being ruined by Buckingham and Nicks. Ignore them. Very well done soft rock/pop and don't forget about McVie who was a great songwriter too. Afterwards you can check out the blues period of the Mac which is very different but satisfying also.
![]() | Centerfield by John Fogerty
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.83 Fogerty's greatest success was of course with Creedence, but he has done enough quality solo work to be mentioned on his own.
![]() | The Ultimate Collection by The Four Tops
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.89 One of the great Motown groups and one of the few to have a consistent lineup for decades.
![]() | 3O Greatest Hits [Best Of] by Aretha Franklin
Buy used from: $9.64 The Queen of Soul. Very deserved title. However, a best of is probably the best way to hear Aretha. She had an unbelievable period of quality work but outside of that has done her fair share of crap.
![]() | Franz Ferdinand by Franz Ferdinand
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.40 |
![]() | So by Peter Gabriel
Buy used from: $28.96 Never a big Genesis fan I do love Gabriel's solo work. Very ambitious music but still accessible.
![]() | On Fire by Galaxie 500
Buy used from: $8.97 Think the shoegazer sound was first heard in Great Britain? Think again. This American group were sorta ignored at the time but presaged a lot of what was to come in the early 90's
![]() | The Very Best of Marvin Gaye by Marvin Gaye
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $9.87 One of Motown's greatest talents
![]() | Mighty Joe Moon by Grant Lee Buffalo
Buy used from: $3.05 Terrific band from the 90's that despite great acclaim never quite made it. Their first two albums are almost perfect. I'd guess you'd call their sound Americana. Great songwriting and tastful production.
![]() | The Best of Guided by Voices: Human Amusements at Hourly Rates by Guided by Voices
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.98 |
![]() | Fire of Love by Gun Club
Buy used from: $39.95 Whoa. Kind of a blues/punk sound with a wildman frontman
![]() | Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea by PJ Harvey
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.92 Uncompromising unique talent. Songs of sex. love, murder and violence. In my opinion has never made a bad album
![]() | Skyscraper National Park by Hayden
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.66 Another unique voice in the literal sense and that of his music. Rock/Folk
![]() | Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix by Jimi Hendrix
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.30 I love Jimi, although, perhaps I don't place him at such an exalted status as some. Whatever the case he is an essential artist.
