The BeatlesThe Beatles by Hunter Davies
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $5.50
The Beatles - and this book - galvanized me. I was about 15 when this came out and I read it like it held The Word inside. OK, so maybe I was a bit over-awed, but it's still a good biography.
Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll RomanceBlack Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance by Dean Wareham
Buy new: $17.13 / Used from: $3.75
Dean Wareham of Galaxie 500, Luna and (now)Dean and Britta has written an eminently readable account of the rise and fall of his two excellent but under-noticed bands. His style is fluid and entirely digestible, and he seems to have rubbed elbows with quite a few (80s and 90s) notables. As is likewise the case with his music, this is highly recommended.
Twenty Thousand Roads: The Ballad of Gram Parsons and His Cosmic American MusicTwenty Thousand Roads: The Ballad of Gram Parsons and His Cosmic American Music by David Meyer
Buy new: $25.60 / Used from: $5.04
Whether you're into GP or not, this is a fascinating story. Get it. Read it.
Richard Thompson: Strange Affair: The Biography [Fairport Convention]Richard Thompson: Strange Affair: The Biography [Fairport Convention] by Patrick Humphries
Buy used from: $64.75
The most complete and ONLY book about RT that I've run up against. Nicely done, if, at this point, it does stop fairly early in Thompson's career.
I'll Sleep When I'm Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren ZevonI'll Sleep When I'm Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon by Crystal Zevon
Buy new: $17.79 / Used from: $4.15
An unflinching biography of sorts, told by those who were there for the dirty life and times of Warren Zevon. The warts and all quality of this book notwithstanding, Zevon emerges as a likeable cuss as well as one talented, brainy man. Well done, Crystal Zevon.
Positively 4th Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina and Richard FarinaPositively 4th Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina and Richard Farina by David Hajdu
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $6.34
A fascinating look at American folk in the early 60s. Of the four personalities focused on, the males, Dylan and Farina, fare more poorly. Not that this strikes me as a caustic book; I think it's just blunt in its appraisal.
Sway: A NovelSway: A Novel by Zachary Lazar
Buy new: $16.31 / Used from: $0.16
A terrific concept rendered literately, if not precisely. Fizzles a bit at the end, perhaps in keeping with what happened to that bright little zeitgeist that everyone attaches to that decade. Maybe THAT'S the point in fact. But it isn't the most satisfying conclusion.
Read the Beatles: Classic and New Writings on the Beatles, Their Legacy, and Why They Still MatterRead the Beatles: Classic and New Writings on the Beatles, Their Legacy, and Why They Still Matter
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $3.70
Presents a wide range of writings on the Beatles. Some are excellent, a few are crap.
White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960sWhite Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s by Joe Boyd
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $3.59
Joe Boyd crossed paths with most everybody in the sixties, but his book is way more than just an orgy of name-dropping. It evokes the era and tickles the hippy nerve in us all. Maybe much of the culture WAS just fashion, but, for those of us who took away more, we can't help but mourn the passing of a time in which the possibilities seemed limitless.
The Rough Guide to Bob Dylan 1 (Rough Guide Sports/Pop Culture)The Rough Guide to Bob Dylan 1 (Rough Guide Sports/Pop Culture) by Nigel Williamson
Buy used from: $0.99
I didn't know diddly about Dylan when I read this book, and now I do. It is, exactly as it claims, a rough guide to Bob Dylan. The perfect choice for someone just getting his or her feet wet.
Chronicles: Volume OneChronicles: Volume One by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $10.80 / Used from: $1.47
Entertaining and candid. For all of the awe people hold for Dylan, he doesn't walk on water; nor does he claim to.
Anyway Anyhow Anywhere (Revised Edition): The Complete Chronicle of The Who 1958-1978Anyway Anyhow Anywhere (Revised Edition): The Complete Chronicle of The Who 1958-1978 by Andrew Neill
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $4.38
Horse's NeckHorse's Neck by Pete Townshend
Buy used from: $9.73
Oh so arty. Not bad though.
Shakey: Neil Young's BiographyShakey: Neil Young's Biography by Jimmy McDonough
Buy new: $12.92 / Used from: $8.45
Carp Fishing on ValiumCarp Fishing on Valium by Graham Parker
Buy used from: $2.44
Won't change your life, but Parker's writing is not without merit. Witty and uniquely conceived.
TarantulaTarantula by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $8.23
What the - not sure what this book is even MEANT to be, but if the intention was to write ambiguously about er some stuff, then it's a resounding success.
Book of LongingBook of Longing by Leonard Cohen
Buy new: $17.96 / Used from: $8.99
Deft and beautiful. Get this and read it.
The Rough Guide to The Rolling Stones 1 (Rough Guide Reference)The Rough Guide to The Rolling Stones 1 (Rough Guide Reference) by Sean Egan
Buy new: $11.69 / Used from: $5.93
This is, as it says, a rough guide. Not real strong as a narrative work, but has plenty of information.
The Rough Guide to The Beatles (Rough Guide Music Guides)The Rough Guide to The Beatles (Rough Guide Music Guides) by Chris Ingham
Buy new: $11.69 / Used from: $6.92
A reference. Not bad, but hard-core Beatle fans will take exception in those instances when the writers assess actual Beatle recordings, because the Beatles have been analyzed to death, and longtime fans have sorted all of this out for themselves.
Timeless Flight: The Definitive Biography of the ByrdsTimeless Flight: The Definitive Biography of the Byrds by Johnny Rogan
Buy used from: $39.99
Hard to find, but this is the best Byrd book I've come across.
