Product Description

This volume presents an analysis of the long-run process of industrialization in Tanzania since independence. It examines what lessons can be derived from the Tanzanian experience. Tanzania has many characteristics in common with other African economies--an initial belief in the efficacy of state intervention in the economy, followed by a turn to more market oriented policies. But Tanzania's African socialist ideology resulted in exceptionally high degrees of state intervention in the industrial sector. This book contributes to our understanding of why the Tanzanian manufacturing sector experienced a long periods of stagnation and productivity decline, after an initial periods of rapid industrial growth.
