Product Description

The martial art of Aikido was developed by Morihei Ueshiba O Sensei and comprises of a number of joint twisting, pinning and striking techniques. Several of Ueshiba's students developed their own interpretation of his teachings which has resulted in a number of approaches to learning Aikido. One such approach was developed by Kenji Tomiki who was also a high ranking student of Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo.

The basic premise of this approach is that to truly understand the core principles of the system one must not merely practice repetitious kata forms. Randori training enables a student to learn the core principles and the true power that can be generated through kata techniques by allowing a student to practice against an aggressive, resisting and knowledgeable opponent. The resulting style of Aikido that Tomiki Sensei developed is commonly referred to as Tomiki Aikido or Shodokan Aikido in some parts of the world.

Within any martial art, the basic curriculum should teach the fundamental principles and the primary techniques of that art. In comparison to the other ways of learning Aikido, the Tomiki approach is rather different. With other styles of Aikido, techniques are usually taught around a particular idea, a certain attack, or a specific technique. Tomiki Sensei categorised the techniques that he was taught by Ueshiba and Kano to demonstrate various principles and themes. Consequently, Tomiki with the help of Ohba Sensei (who was also a student of Aikido and Judo) developed two kihon kata and six koryu no kata.

Of these six koryu no kata, the primary kata used in all grading syllabuses around the world up to and including 3rd Dan is the Koryu Dai San on which this DVD focuses on.

This DVD introduces the Koryu Dai San to a new student while also providing a useful reference to an advanced student regardless of affiliation. It demonstrates all fifty techniques of the Koryu Dai San as well as including sections on weapons etiquette and the ukemi that are required to perform this kata. Each section of this kata is broken down into its individual techniques to provide a greater understanding of the technique.

Furthermore, a bonus section has been included in this DVD which covers the first nineteen techniques of the Goshin Ho which are generally required for 4th Dan and above.
