Product Description

"Ancient Pines" is a series of poetic duets between the two artists. The direct to 48 bit digital recording offers melodic beauty with an urban energy. On "Ancient Pines Suite" the duo is joined with bass trumpet ace Ryan Shultz, the only trio composition on the project. O'Dell's bell like tone refers to the early modern soundings of Lee Konitz and Eric Dolphy. Aoki's bass has the passion of Charles Mingus with a wrapping of many world forms, both African and Asian. Liner notes by Scott Yanow.

Another Score for O'Dell5
This Modern Jazz album is filled with amazing playing and compelling compositions. O'Dell's composing surprises the ear with interesting and stunning chords. His atonal work on "Sneaky", for example, shows off his versatility in composition in contrast to much of the rest of the album. The performance aspect of O'Dell and Aoki together is nothing to ignore either. The two play together excellently with a great amount of communication and expression. The appearence of Shultz's Bass Trumpet is also a pleasent surprise part way through the album. Another great hit in O'Dells catalouge and a great addition to anyone's Jazz library.
