a must have5

before listening to graphic evidence find a quiet place free of distractions, otherwise you won't fully appreciate just how good this recording is, and it is one of the best ensembles i've heard - they're all that good. actually better. together, the trio, jason kao hwang on violin, francis wong on soprano sax and tatsu aoki on string bass, joined on two selections by wu man on pipa, explore a range of sounds with near obsessive control which is the magic of this group.

this is abstract music, improv music, experimental music, with influences from the camps of cage to braxton, who hwang has played with, he's also played with butch morris. and at the same time, on to the endless embrace of light, this is ancient chinese music.

on invocation and resonance notes are spaced and extended, as wong's sax keens and hwang's violin whines and gathers momentum, sounds rise and fall.

on transparent tapestry hwang's playing is an incredibly delicate contrast to aoki's dark brooding bowing.

francis wong's soprano owns the door beneath an arch. after repeated listening i want to say he's in company of branford marsalis and charles lloyd, when they're at their reflective best, though after listening to wong i would put them in his company. i mean as a sense of approach to the soprano sax, not styles; wong has performed with cecil taylor whereas marsalis and lloyd probably have not and, probably, would not.

the san francisco based label, asian improv records, founded by jazz pianist, jon jang, and francis wong, is dedicated to `directions in music by asian americans' primarily in the san francisco bay area, wong's home, and chicago, aoki's home. jason kao hwang from jersey city, his musical home base on lower east side new york, makes this an extraordinary cross country group.
